Say you were given a free computer built to your specs. What would you need in it? What's important.

The best computer I would build:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ or Intel Pentium 4 3.4ghz
1 gig ddr2 ram
200 gig hd
nice case
decent motherboard
dvd burner
xp pro

is this what you were asking?

I agree with Ryanoman that would be a badass computer ^_^ also have two hard drives... two hard drives is the best thing to have! i have two hd's one is 20 gig and the other is 10 gig but now that i just got a full time job i will be upgrading my hard drives..muwahahahah ^_^ and also a sound blaster is really good for your sound, and lets see..... yeah and diffently make sure to get xp pro and not xp home because xp home is the worse! okay.lol hope that helps.. but i would build one like what Ryanoman mention.............

Just out of curiosity: are there that many people around here that run Linux full-time, or almost full-time? There seem to be a lot of posts alluding to that.

Well, windows is less freeing than linux, and linux is virtually 100% Virus proof.

Those who know programming usually 90% run linux because it allows so much more, has so much more, and IT'S FREE!

Trust me, I'm well-versed in the relative merits of Unix and Unix-like operating systems. wink.gif I do, in fact, write software for such systems. But I do see a lot of comments about it on here, and I'm just asking if there really are that many people around running Linux full-time or almost full-time (or at least half the time).

i don't have linux... not yet anyways.

i blame my lack of a CD burner. i was going to try it on an old comptuer, but i can't burn a CD-R that it will read. i can't burn a CD-R period.

stupid combo drive gave out.

i think the biggest obstecle to people getting linux is the number of distros. if it were like firefox, i'd so have gotten it already. but even after i chose a distro, i had no idea what processor i was on (uneducated in the verses of techyness i was). then i figured it out, but it still took a while.

it'd be nice if there was just a base linux distro that you downloaded, and you installed modules for whatever feature you wanted.

(now someone will tell me there's a distro like that. my CD burner gave out. :-( so it's still no help to me. )

You could always just download the kernel and any other modules you need, compile them yourself, and install it.

But it would be a tremendous pain in the ass.

lol. regarding the specs...who needs all that...seriously? my preference...laptop...

- 3 GHz
- 512 M RAM
- 40-50G HD
- CDRW/DVDRW drive
- 14.1" screen...

that's it really...more will cost like hell. this config is real cheap.. i think..
it's wasting stuff to have like 300 G's and not really needing them all..at least in my personal opinion..i.e. need, not want...
