Does anyone have Betta Fishes?, Just got one today... Options

I got a little betta fish today, and I noticed that it was extremely active when i put it in it's new home, but about 4 hours later, it's just chillin' at the bottom of its tank. Now, I noted that the temperature settled around 75 degrees, when it was 78 before. Could the temp. cause inactivity? I believe ppl with goldfish could also help me with this question.

Also, is it ok to put a little extra Stress coat in the water? The instructions said only a capful, but I wanted to be sure. I don't want this little guy to die! I need a friend in the dorm!

I had one not too long ago. A blue one named 'Yellow' (Don't ask how he got his name)... but it died. We didn't even have him that long.

umm...im not sure exacty. he was probably only acting like that because he was in a new environment. the only other thing i know about those fish is that thet are agressive. so dont put them in the same bowl/tank with other fish.

I had goldfishes, but they all died. I acually wanted them to die. I wanted to flush it down the toilet, then it goes *swim swim*

My brother is good with fishes, but he's not home right now. I think your best bet is to google "beta fish care" and some sites can help you to learn more about your fish.

I used to own beta fishes but to tell you the truth, I have NO freaking clue what the hell you are talking about. Haha which is why my younger sister took care of the fish and not me =) Anyways, try looking up information on them online.

I had a couple of them... They aren't very active fish... so I wouldn't worry about it... and they can do a good job living in crappy conditions... So I think you'll be safe

There are many reasons why your betta could be sitting in one spot at the bottom of the tank. I disagree with all posts above this, bettas are very active fish and they like to swim around. They do have the ability to live in crappy conditions but it'll have a very short life.

A betta must live in a bowl or tank that can hold atleast one gallon of water. Do not block access to the surface as bettas breath from the surface of the water. Filters are optional because bettas like to live in stagnant water, if you do have a filter get one that has a very low output. Meaning it doesn't cause a very strong current in the bowl or tank. The reason why they don't need filters is because they can breathe air from the surface of the water. The other thing is, since bettas are from warm asian countries, they like to have their water noticeably warm. The lowest temperature a betta can live in is around twenty five degrees celcius, having that in mind a temperature of thirty degrees celcius would be perfectly fine for your betta.

It is safe to add stress coat in there but you should not overdose it.

And make sure to have clean water in there, and that you should do fifty percent water changes every week (only if you don't have a filter). If you do have a filter, do fifty percent water changes every two weeks.

Follow my instructions, your betta will survive and have a noticeably longer life.
Trust me on this one.

Concluding this, I really think that createblog should have a pets forum. I can manage that forum (and that forum only) if you start one, since I know alot about pets.

well, i am going to buy a light for additional heating, and i don't think i'll get a filter though. i'm good on keeping a tank clean.

my lil fishie isn't eating though. I got both flakes and pellets designed for bettas. he'll spit them out.

i did put in more warm water when i changed the water, and he seems to be more active now. I also have enough air at the top of the tank. i've read some online sites, and it seems everyone has a different opinion on how to care for them. i'm just gonna stick with changing half the water every week.

if you get this, honorguard, plz respond. thanks

That's good, your betta is show some signs of improvement. And thanks for taking my advice, I hope your betta gets more better.

Now you claim that your betta will not eat flakes and pellets designed for bettas huh. You must've bought a betta that was raised using live or frozen food. There are some bettas that have this problem, they won't eat anything besides live or frozen food. If this is the kind of betta you have, try feeding the betta some bloodworms (frozen or live) and see if he eats that. If he doesn't you can also try some brine shrimp (frozen or live). When buying and feeding this kinds of food to your betta, you should never buy and feed your betta freeze-dried food. The reason for this is that all the nutrients from the food is taken away, plus the freeze-dried part of the food can harm the fish's mouth and stomach.

And what kind of pellets and flakes are you feeding your betta? The best kinds of pellets for bettas out there are the ones from the Japanese companies. It's known as Hikari Betta Bio-Gold (Baby Sized) Pellets. Those are good, they can be used as the betta's staple diet (meaning it can eat that food everyday).

You can also trick your betta to eat and like flakes or pellets. You can do this by taking bloodworm or brine shrimp, and mixing it with some pellets or flakes. They'll most likely eat both and they'll start to get used to it. Then after about a month or so, try feeding your betta with flakes or pellets by themselves. They won't notice a difference and they'll most likely eat it.

my fishes died 2 days after i got them, i changed the water and i guess the water temp wasnt the same enough.

thanks a lot for the advice honorguard, I will try the live food thing, because it's been 4 days. I'll run out and pick some up tomorrow.

do you notice when you change the water with the fish he acts werid? i think my betta is smarter than he looks, lol. i changed the water, took out this tall decoration i had in there, then i put in 3 small colorful stones. i think he knows it's missing, he keeps on poking at the larger rocks.

also, he'll watch his food fall to the bottom. he'll look at food pellets floating at the top of the water, then if they sink to the bottom, he'll follow them down to the bottom, stare at it, then go back up to the top to watch another one fall. it's so werid, but he never eats the pellets :P

he likes staring at lights too. i swear when i turn on a light by my desk, he'll go to that corner of the tank, in an almost verticle position, and just hang there for hours.


yeah, i know i'm werid for watching my fish for so long, but what can i say, it's better than studying US religions
