in speech class today, we learned about people getting offended when someone would say something like "POLICE MAN OR FIREMAN OR BUSBOY, etc. and one other thing she mentioned was god. apparently, women were getting upset because the bible called god a man. so they are now changing some bibles to make the word "HE" (referring to god) to "HE/SHE". what do you think about that? huh.gif

I would propose it to be 'S/he' rather than 'He/She'

Makes it quicker. :P

But, Since god is this 'Real' character who can do anything or be anything, we can even consider 'him' Neither. What if he has no genetalia? Or is that just plain wrong in the religious world?

In the beginning of time, God created Adam. If you read the bible, it says Adam was made in God's image:

Genesis 2:7 "The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into is nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

For that very reason, is why people refer to God as a man.

That reminds me of something that happened when I was like, 3.

I was talking to my friends at Preschool and I told them I think God is a girl, and some especially obnoxious child went to me and said: "I can't believe you think God is a girl! Of course God is a boy! Duh!" My friends told me that God could be male or female, and it doesn't matter. I don't think it matters. Then again, I'm Atheist, so I could care less.

Yes, there is no doubt that the Bible was written by a group, equal in number of men and women, whose members agree that God is male.

Fosho!

^ for some reason i can't picture you saying "fosho".

as i stated before, he made a girl pregnant. even if it was just pointing to her and saying "HAVE MY BABY!", he had to contribute the right chrosomosomes and blahdeeblah to the baby for it to be born. he made adam out of himself. why would he have made adam first if he was a woman? it would have been eve first, then.

I don't have a strong opinion on this either, but from what I understand in ancient times, everything was written in reference to males. So if you read any written documents that was made pre-14th century, everything is refered as He...

What does it matter. It says it in the bible, so supposedly its from a higher entity then ourselves. I wouldn't want to change the bible if it said God was a female. God is God and what difference does it make?

Some people just don't know when to fight and when to shut the f**k up.

By the way, I'm Jewish. Not Christian.

Even though most people call God male, God is supposed to be neither. Because only animals and plants have 2 different genders. (Us humans, being animals/mammels. The only difference is that we have free will.) And God is not an animal and a plant. He's God. SO God can't be male and God can't be female.

And if God was male, who gave birth to Jesus Christ. A WOMAN!! So God loves women just as much as men. God doesn't favor.

I completely agree. I don't want to let this sort of stuff get in they of my faith. No matter what he/she is, God still loves you no matter what gender you are. God can't hate something he/she created and then had given it life.

And God created woman and she had 3 breasts. He then asked the woman "Is there anything you'd like to have changed?" She replied, "Yes, could get rid of this middle breast?" And so it was done, and it was good. Then the woman exclaimed as she was holding the third breast in her hand, "What can be done with this useless boob?" then God created man.

That is exactly how i feel about the situation. I wasn't rasied to view God as male or female. I view God as a spirit. I really don't like to associate God by Him or He because I don't view God as having a genitalia. I prefer to call God ... a spirit, holiness. Because, in a way, that is what God is. _smile.gif

If you want to debate about the existence of God in a rational, supported way, please go to that topic. As for this one, please limit opinions to God's gender.

Well I've never posted on any of these, but this one caught my attention. Earlier someone said that God created MAN in His own image, so don't you think God has to be a man? (Duh)... then God, (being the all-powerful God that he is) Took a rib from Adam, and created woman. Genesis 1:27-So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. And if you try and contridict the Bible, then you are just dumb... but whatever you want to believe... everyone will be judged in the end.

We're well aware of the fact that the Bible uses "He" and "Him" to refer to God. There's no need to restate it. Read the damn posts.

ehh that's stupid. If they did that then it would use up more ink and kill more trees to make paper. Besides, I believe that God is neithor male nor female in his position as Father in the trinity. In the son part he is man.

If you expect us to believe that God made Mary magically pregnant, then why are we expected to believe that God is a man? If Mary is a "virgin", then they didn't, uh, do it. So it's possible that God could be a woman, it's not like Mary got deflowered, so it's possible...Did that make any sense?

I feel uncomfortable using scientific reasons in God-related debates.

When you say "men", sometimes it includes both women and men.
So I guess God doesn't really have a gender, except it's a general idea.

I know, but you see, since they have this big idea that science doesn't have an impact, if you put all this scientific drivel in their minds, they just retort back "As long as I have faith it's TRUE." At which point I just feel like throwing a rock at them.

God isn't suppost to have a gender. But i look at God as a man. because i think girls are cold and secretive, so i picture satan as a girl. no offence tho, because i happen to be a girl. i just seem to trust men more than females.

well, jesus' mom is a woman, so it would make sense that god is a man.. O_o??

Uh that holds no logic. Especially if you knew about the Christian faith. First off, God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are one; a trinity. And God is not the one who impregnated Mary, Joseph did. Therefore with your so called logic you would be able to say that Joseph was a man but not that God was a man. In the first book of the bible (Genesis) you can infer that God is a man because it says he created Adam out of his own image and only created a woman (Eve) because Adam needed a companion and that Eve was created from Adam. Despite these inferences, no one really can say whether God is a man or a woman for sure but I think it's completely ludicrous to want to change the bible to say "he/she". It's been he forever and most scholars would probably have to say that yes, God is a man, so what's the point? Who cares if it's more politically correct or if some feminists are getting offended? That's just like saying let's change all the pictures of Jesus because it shows him as a white man and all the Asians are getting angry about it. Or something like that. Anyway, I also think I remember learning that God really isn't a specific gender or race but I have no real evidence to back that up, but I just wanted to say it.

God is a universal and benevolent being. How can the maker of our universe, a universe that holds life of all kinds, be a specific anything?

God is a woman.

God is a man.

God is the spirit that is life as well as the giver and taker of life. This is such a vast topic to explore, but I don't have the time or the patience to write a 1000+ word essay in a response to a CB thread. If I did that, then yous bastuds would have to pay me for labour. tongue.gif

In the beginning of time, God created Adam. If you read the bible, it says Adam was made in God's image:

Genesis 2:7 "The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into is nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."

For that very reason, is why people refer to God as a man.

you should clarify that by "He" and "God" you mean a God from a certain religion because there are some religions with male and female Gods.

God is the ultimate holy spirit.  No gender.  He created the first human male in his image, meaning "Dominant".  He wanted males to be the leader of the "unit family".

To all the women soon to bash me, I just want to say that I look forward to our first female president and my mom is head of the household.  Anyways.

Like the Father is "usually" the leader of the household.  Thats why you always hear:  Oh God our "Father" in Heaven.

We're bot debating the sex of Christ, but rather the Father of Christ, God.

Before anyone tells me "but they're one being!!!", yes, yes, I know, don't lecture me on something I already know... however, as many have pointed out, God is more Spirit than anything. How would anyone know the sex of a Spirit... beats me.

i don't think god has a gender. but then again, he did make jesus a man. why? probably he knew that if he were to be a woman, no one would take her seriously. women at that time were just... well, *there*. or maybe god himself sees men stronger than women. women are motherly, but that doesn't mean they're not strong.

yea, women are trying to change things today. we can do things men can. but on the other hand, sometimes it's good to be different. men can be strong, while woman can be motherly. men can be nurturing, and women can be strong, but women and men are best at different things. BUT, strong nowadays is seen as muscles and stuff, but what counts more is the strenght inside.

OK, i'm gonna shut up now. i'm babbling and going way off topic. huh.gif

i agree for what you wrote, but joseph did not impregnate mary. joseph wasn't jesus's father. mary was made pregnant by god's power.

yea, i think the bible shouldn't be updated either. even if i think god has no gender. i mean, we don't want to call god IT, either.

First, you have to know that God is a spiritual being. so you can't decide whether he is male or female based on the reproductive system. but the bible (god's word) uses the pronoun reference to god as "him," "he," and "his." Also, Jesus said that God was his father, not his mother. Jesus's mother did not have intercourse with joseph. Joseph only played the role of a father for jesus while he was on earth. god sent the Holy spirit to plant jesus into mary. if Joseph did have intercourse with mary, which is considered sinful, that act would contradict god's commandments.

People who believe that the bible should include "he/she" or "him/her" do not pay attention to what is really important. and if they want those pronoun references to be applied to god, then they simply do not even know who god is.

"of what one cannot speak, of that one must keep silent." -Ludwig wittgenstein.

Basically, if you don't know much about an issue, please do not argue about it.

yea, that bugged me too.I went to a Catholic school for 9 years and I was taught religon class on a daily basis. All my life I've heard god be referred to as a he and it kinda pissed me off.I mean, making god a sex, age,or ethnicity is kinda saying,'well this age/sex/ethnicity is superior'.And whenever I asked about it,they were like "well, god really is both",but then if that's true why is god constantley being referred to as "Father","He",ect.,That's one of the reasons why I converted to Buddhism.Cuz in Buddhism,it's like a personal god.I mean,it doesn't have a race or a gender or an age.It doesn't even have a name. It's kinda left up to you.

I'm not really sure if they should be altering the Bible though. It's a peace of literary artwork and altering it would be disrespectful. That oes for any artwork. And it's soooo old,so it's like wrong to change it now.

I dont really care..

But I do find it odd how a lot of people just ASSUME he's a man..

I mean.. Im very much against people who think Men are better.. or all powerful.. so yeah..

and IF God was real, I think I'd invision him more as a spirit with no form, like have you seen that episode of Futurama where Bender gets thrown into space and finds God or whatever and all he is is blinking lights and swirls of stuff..

I find it funny now how I've turned this seriouse board to Futurama, LOL

I'd rather have God be considered a man. When people think of God, they dont necessarily think of a woman. But I do not care about what they change it to because I do not believe in God.
