i was watching the amazing race on tv last night [no, this topic should not be moved into entertainment] and on this one part...they were in china and all of the chinese taxi cab drivers wouldn't allow them to get in their cab. even if the taxi was empty, every single cab driver would tell them they can't get in. on many parts, the chinese people would laugh at the americans and wouldn't help them with directions. one time, a cab driver let the people in and took them to the wrong place. [it must've been on purpose, because he was laughing]

and i wanted to know...

do people in china despise americans? why so? is there some specific reason why they don't like us?

I think you're just...overreacting? I saw that episode too, I don't think it's because Chinese people hate Americans. What, wouldn't you laugh if people were having lots of trouble, and were quarreling with their signficant others?

Also, about the not helping thing, a LOT of Shanghainese people don't know English. They may have good intentions, but they can't help because of a language barrier.

And the taxi...well, how come they were able to catch a cab after the task? I think it was definitely rush hour, not racism. And anyway, why wouldn't the taxi drivers like Americans? They are tourists, and they're going somewhere, and they're relatively easy to get money from.

I'm Chinese. And well.....yea, that is quite right what everybody so far has said in their replies. The rush hour is the most likely possibility. You seriously have no idea how many other countries hate America!
Thats all I'll say before I end up saying something else....

Eh.. I've been to china before, and some of the peopel there were complete asses. They were acting all superior towards me, and I'm chinese myself. I'm sure it's nothing personal towards Americans alone. I'm not badmouthing china either. There's alot of places in China where the people are really nice. I dunno. I didn't like China that much. Hong Kong owns. happy.gif

barelyy_coherent has a point though. If I were a taxi driver I would probably laugh at them too, with them running around with cameras following them. It's a little weird, and they probably have no idea what's going on.

i don't know, i don't think so...
i am following what gigi said, but a lot of chinese people like the cameras and they wouldn't run away from it... maybe it's a set up?

OMG, I <3 the Amazing Race. Hmm, I don't really think it's racism or that the Chinese hate Americans. Like barelyy_coherent said, the language barrier was probably the problem.

i think it might be racism...they always edit a lot of stuff out to make it seem like there's a lot of drama

they probably filmed the taxi drivers when they were on a break or something funny happened but made it look like they were laughing at the americans _dry.gif

Exactly.
