I'm in a webdesign class at school, and we work on my school's website. My teacher is a nice lady and means well, but she doesn't know a whole lot about html or css. Let's just say she knows how to use Dreamweaver. I grew up on html and HATE Dreamweaver with a passion. That's a whole different topic.

Anyway, I did a google search and from http://www.com.msu.edu/aa/apinfo/newsclips/netscape.shtml I found out some things that Netscape 4.8 doesn't accept:

The following is a summary of problems users may encounter when running Netscape 4.8 and previous versions.
* Text formatting and style: Netscape 4.78 does not handle the style formatting system the AP site uses. This usually results in text reverting to your browser-specific fonts and styles and can produce strange alignment and layout problems, especially when printing pages for hard copies.
* Macromedia Shockwave/Flash Animations: Netscape 4.78 may or may not properly load the plug-in for Shockwave animations. This is critical for the PCAC home page menu system. Downloading the Flash Plugin from macromedia.com may alleviate this problem.
* JavaScript Issues: Many of the AP website pages have applications written in JavaScript. While we have encoutered no problems as of yet with these applications, the version of JavaScript handled by Netscape 4.78 is earlier to the version used on the AP pages. If you encounter problems or "JavaScript errors" while viewing our pages, please e-mail Ryan Bladzik (bladzikr@msu.edu) or Perrin E. Parkhurst (parkhur1@msu.edu) for assistance.

How many people today use Netscape 4.8? I honestly don't know, but that baby's old. I think most people use IE and newer versions of Netscape... ones that accept CSS. Besides what's listed, does anyone else know what the old Netscape isn't compatible with? I would like to know so I can make sure it's not used for my school's website.

If Netscape 4.8 was released more than 2 years ago, your website shouldn't have to support it, just put something like "Best Viewed in Mozilla/Firefox" (Or IE, or Opera, Safari). like most people did when the internet was young.

Lol, imagine if you were trying to get it to support Mosaic.

actually it has to support 4.8. for some reason or another my school district has 4.8 on all of the computers... some also have 7.1... but others don't. my teacher is BIG on "supporting all major browsers." i don't know why but she thinks that people still use 4.8... we can't have "best viewed..." because that will make the people not want to visit our website... i guess O_o it's so stupid though. apparently they spent most of the year last year redesiging... which is a VERY good thing because before the site sucked. well they also spent a great deal of time trying to figure out why they couldn't get a scrollbar in a table cell and why they couldn't get a background image to repeat. i wasn't in the class this year but i told my teacher it was becuase the old netscape doesn't support much... like css. she said that's GOOD because it'll make the pages smaller and faster to load for slow slow modems. oh gee.

well if table border colors aren't unversal, then imagine the differences from there. unless if you go down to the text level , there has to be some things different... let's just say that netscape is very... unusual currently.

Netscape used to be better stubborn.gif

well, technically if you're supporting 7.1, you are supporting the major browser. I can't imagine 4.8 has too much market share anyway, IE comes in first, Mozilla/Firefox in a distant second. And if it's Mozilla/Firefox compliant, it's netscape compliant, because they all use the Gecko engine.

it would be much better if you asked for a districtwide upgrade. it shouldn't take long, if they can image the entire network.
