Ipods:

ipod 4th gen: $330
- popular

Among Ipod killers:

Iriver H320: $250
- FM tuner, recording
- color screen
- photo viewing
- video support ( if upgraded to korean firmware- it's in english too)
- USB on the go- download pictures straight from digital cameras, or music from other devices (requires upgrade to korean firmware, and a modified cable. or buying international version. ) -- when an ipod is plugged into this; the ipod freezes and crashes. -- told you it really killed.
- DRM support

Creative Zen touch: $200
- touch scroller
- FM tuner

add your own ipod killers and specs.

Id rather pay $100 more for a nice small reliable mp3 player than an unreliable nomad which is the size of 6 wallets or a lyra which is twice as big as the nomad.

i'm not saying ipods suck.

they are great music players. even a chimp could use one. the noise to sound ratio could use some work, and the battery life, but it's very simple to use.

but, it costs a rather bit... you can get a creative with more features for $100 less.

and the ipods are only good for playing music...

you can't record, listen to radio, etc. without expensive extras.

and some people really hate the click wheel (yea, yea i'm probably the only one... but i hate touch pads too... i feel that the wheel should spin... )

anyways: basically if you want the following, you shouldn't get an ipod:

` recording
`line in
` FM radio
` color screen w/ picture viewing
`color screen w/ video viewing
`good noise to sound ratio
` two headphone jacks
` USB On the go
` something cheaper

if the Ipod cost 150 bucks it'd be fine... because that's how much it should cost based on it's features.

i got my ipod 2 years ago for christmas when they first came out (generation one bitches!) and now i'm over it. everyone thinks they're so trendy and cool, but personally i think they're a little cliche and that there ARE better options out there. i would like to get a rio karma, but since all my songs are in acc (or is it aac? whatever the apple format is) format, they won't play on any other mp3 player. here are its specs:

-20GB* HDD plays back over 330 hours of MP3 or 660 hours of WMA music (over 5000 MP3 or 10,000 WMA songs)**
-USB 2.0 for fast transfers
-Transfer content between multiple PCs
-15-hour continuous playback with the rechargeable LiIon battery
-5-Band parametric equalizer with pre-sets
-Dynamic playlist generation
-Auto-DJ intelligently finds, mixes and creates playlists from tracks on command
-Included docking station supports: -- Dual RCA Line-Outs to connect to most home stereo components -- Ethernet port -- Assign an IP address for networking capability -- Auto-synchronization with host PC
-Plays Ogg Vorbis (a free music format)

hopefully i can find a file converter soon, or i'll have to reimport about 75 cds....

oh, and my dad got the black 20GB iriver (don't know the model name) and i found the menu system so confusing i just stopped even trying to use it. i wouldn't reccommend it unless you want to spend some quality time with the guide book.

Shoot, posted as my sister again, w/e. But IPods don't suck, their good players but like has been said before, they've become extremely cliche. Because of this, Apple regulates the prices of them and it's impossible to find any good deals on them. Other players can be had for a great deal less and often have more options.

And since when were nomads unreliable? What player are you comparing to, Creative which makes nomads makes a ton of MP3 players, Zen, Zen Xtra, Zen Touch, Muvo2, Muvo TX, just look at their site. http://www.creative.com/products/welcome.asp?category=213 those are their MP3 players. They also make small MP3 players like the Zen Micro which competes in the same market as the Ipod mini. Then they have the even smaller Flash based MP3 players. Then the larger Notebook harddrive based MP3 players which compete with the Apple IPod.

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a RCA Lyra A/V Jukebox soon, Sharper Image has it for 399.99 then with a $30 off coupon, 369.99 then we use discover cash back bonus so cut that in half, $185 then $50 rebate from RCA which brings the final price down to $135. Which is a VERY good price for something that can play videos, display photos, and play music. It also has a larger screen than the iRiver h320. But it IS bigger but I'm willing to give up portability for more features. Plus I don't think that the iRiver can directly record video from TV or DVD's, correct me if I'm wrong. Only problem with the A/V Jukebox is it's short batterylife but that doesn't really concern me.

the Video capabilitys of the H320 will awe you...

i don't have a dig. camera, so i can't show you... but it's very, very cool.

the screen is a bit small, and the supported framerate (10) sucks, but it's still Video on a Music player.

JW, does the H320 that's sold in the US have the USB in that the European models have? Since I read an article that said that the US model wouldn't be sold with that option. So you can't hook your Digital camera directly to it and just upload your pics.

Yea but the RCA Lyra A/V Jukebox has no framerate limit, at least none that I know of, so it won't be quite as choppy and I can record directly from a DVD player or TV or VCR so I can get my favorite shows/movies for the road.

the US H320s dont' have USB OTG (on the go), but can be hacked to have it.

and the RCA lyra A/V jukebox is probably better than the H320 at video... if you mostly want the vidoes, then the H320 isn't really for you.

IPods are very popular. That's simply why I wanted one at first. Now that I realize it comes with organization features such as a calander and contacts, they seem well worth the money and I want one.

The 15/20gig of space is a nice plus as well.

Yea but some people dont' want to pay more for less features. The skyline is the best, that's why it's so hot, IPod is not, it's only got lots of marketing hype and the "coolness" factor and it looks good. It's become a social icon, if you don't have an Ipod then you aren't hip. Yea well some of us want some more features and don't want to have to pay to try and be cool.

i'd like to add the iriver H10, as a mini killer.

color screen
5 gb
picture and text viewer
plays-for-sure
FM capabilities
removable battery
touch strip (like the zens)
32 EQs
5 colors

on the contrary, the creatives are a viable substitute for the ipod. sure; they break easier.

but if you look at the iriver, there is a one year warrenty for virtually anything. It's a bit slow to startup, but that's because it actualy turns off and saves power, unlike the ipod.

the ipod, without comparing it to other players, is good. but when you start comparing, the only thing that the ipod does good is looks and UI (user interface)

i've yet to see an ipod attachement that lets you record from FM radio.

the attachements are also quite expensive.

20 gig ipod + recording add on (50 bucks) + color screen (impossible) + FM tuner (20 bucks) + picture viewing (impossible)

so, to be fair, let's go this way:

60 gig ipod photo (450) +recording add on (50) + FM tuner (30) + USB OTG (35)

H340, modded with 60 gig drive(400 +50 for drive) + USB OTG (4 )

you're just jealous because you can't watch movies.

Apple

lol, I think iPods are only really expensive because they're Apple, plus I think they look a lot better than other MP3 players, though they don't have as many features compared to the features in the MP3 players people are posting.

Tsk tsk tsk, You should no better.
If you did do that, you just wasted the 100 dollars. As the nomad is alot more reliable than a shit ipod.

The lyra is 1028291 times better than the iPod too.
Its only big cause its a VIDEO player too.

Foo, get your facts straight.

You just wasted money, plus you went into debt? Wow, thats even worse.

Baku, Portable DVD Players are huge compared to mp3's. I'd rather have the upgraded h320, or the Pmp. I'd like it, rather then carrying around that big Portable DVD player. Holding all those movies. While it's better to just rip the movies and put them into a PVC.

Also, are you trying to say you have more money than us, and that you are rubbing it into our faces?

Acid, i also think the click wheel is gay.
But i do like touch pads though, like the M:Robe 500i
I also like the updown line touch things. Those kick the Click Wheels ass, its better to go up and down, instead of in a gay circle.
Such as the one on the h10, and the M:Robe 100.

even if you think that i pod sucks, they are really easy to download songs onto, and they will automatically have the song name on it. Other mp3 players, like the one i used to have, it takes like 1 minute to download each song, and you have to put in the name yourself.

even if you think that i pod sucks, they are really easy to download songs onto, and they will automatically have the song name on it.  Other mp3 players, like the one i used to have, it takes like 1 minute to download each song, and you have to put in the name yourself.

... Other mp3 players do that to you know, its 2005, get with the time. iPod didn't do that. And you can't give us Speeds, as alot of things factor in.
What kind of mp3 players, besides the old ones i guess, make you do that?! You don't put the name of the song in manually!!

most things aren't really the MP3 player's fault, it's the computer's fault or the ripper's fault.

the things that make people hate the ipod makes it so easy for anyone to use.

for instance- it makes you use itunes. why? because if it lets you use anything, people will get confused.

seamless integration.

that's because they make every part.

uLoVeMikeRoch, be careful. i don't want this thread to get closed...

yes, for most people, ipods are a great waste of money. but there are people to which the ipod is THE best choice.
