Do you believe that people often living in poor areas are mostly likely to commit a crime all the time? In history class, my teacher said no and i totally agree. Crimes can happen anywhere in the US. it dosent always have to be a poor area like the ghetto and stuff..it dosent matter..what do you guys think? I think of this really confusing too

Statistically, poor people commit more crimes than rich people.

It makes sense when you think about it... why would you commit a crime when you can get what you want legally?

If you don't believe me, go walk for an hour in Greenwich, Connecticut, the richest suburb of NYC. Then take a taxi and go walk in Harlem or the inner city of NYC for an hour. Tell me where you feel safer.

also, statisticaly, black people commit more crime too. which i think is a small part of the people are scared of black people, because of all the stuff that goes on "up in da hood!" lol. i think its wrong to discriminate against black people just b/c of that stupid statistic. grrr i hate racism.

ne ways, yes i agree with the poor people statistic thing.rich people can just basicaly go out & buy whatever they want, whenever they want. poor people really cant afford those kind of luxuries, so of course some of them are going to go out & steal b/c they cant afford whatever they want.

I definitely agree that poor people commit more crimes. Like comradered said, why would you commit crimes if you can get everything legally? If everything comes into your hands with no problem, why would you need to use force?

Not necessarily... think of the mob. Rich, yes. But oh so many crimes. Maybe a little more likely to steal. It also depends on thier home life... like if they were raised to know right from wrong and had good parent(s) or not.

You can't assume a poor person is a thief.

I can't assume a poor person is a thief, but I can assume that a poor perosn is more likely to be a thief than a rich person.

Most poor people do not have functional families -- one of the main reasons that they're poor, and thus probably don't have a right from wrong foundation like people in stabler families.

I believe the poor steal because they need it, but rich ppl steal too, just for the "fun" of it. and it's in our human nature to steal, so i believe neone that has the power to will steal. But i belive that the poor would steal more then the rich, probably because they can't afford somethan or they actually need somethan. but it doesn't mean that they are bad ppl because of it

poor people just get caught because the cops watch them more carefully.

not really.

it's mostly petty theft, isn't it?

i mean, in california, steal a 21 dollar pizza 3 times, and you've got a life sentence.

interesting. human brians have lots of possiblities they want to do.

1. poor ppl steal b/c they cant afford it.
2. rich ppl steal cuz their 2 cheap

Sometimes, thats true. But the extremely poor (i mean homeless) in Frisko and Oakland, as i hear, dont even steal here.

while crime can and will definitely happen anywhere, its more likely to happen in a poor area where the people are worse off and not as well educated. not only do they need to steal more, because they have less money, but they may come from a background where crime is condoned, and thus may not know any better

poorEST ppl commit crimes becuz they feel things r unfair n decide to take things in their own hands... other poor ppl still commit crimes because they're living with stuff they don't want. they commit A GREATER VARIETY of crime than the rich ppl because they aren't economically content... rich ppl basically the most common crime they commit is murder, whereas poor ppl are more in the line of theft.

You do realize that over 95% of drug offenders are small-time petty crooks and poor people right?

If you think rich people are more likely to kill you, walk an hour through Beverly Hills then walk an hour through the Washington, DC slums. Tell me where you are more likely to be killed.

The exceptions only prove the rule. Whenever a rich person commits a relaly heinous crime, you bet it makes the national news. But poor people do it so much that it doesn't make the national news nearly as often.

Considering the percentage of poor people outweight the percentage of rich people about 9:1 if not more its impossible for the richer class to commit the same amount of crimes

same percentage, not same number.

meaning that if there are 10 rich and 10,000 poor, then the rich would commit 1/1000 the amount of crimes as poor, which would mean if each person committed one crime, that's same percentage. (100%)

There is no denying that the highest murder rates are all in poor communities and to a greater extent, in poor states.

it's all a scheme by rich people to make poor people look bad.

as for my stats... 70% of all stats are made up. i don't clain responsibility.

` yes, poor people steal more; because why do people steal? because they can't buy it by themselves, or they enjoy the rush.

if you had 100 billion dollars, would you still steal a car radio to sell?

I've lived in both a very rich area and a very very poor area and I can tell you I feel a lot safer in the rich area. At my old school in a poor town, fights happened every 2-3 days. Now they happen every 2-3 months.

I live, in a wealthier neighborhood then some of the ppl I go to school w/ and am amazed at how many fights they had at their old school - like 1 everyday. I have seen what, 2 in a year at my new school, (at a very rich area).

And where I live, I'm not afraid of getting my house robbed. (where they clean out ur house - dvd, stereo, tv, jewlery, money, while ur gone somewhere for a few hours). But the poor neighborhoods, you have to put ur keys in a safe place, always lock your doors, lock your windows and all that stuff... When I watch the satillite at New York News, they have TONS of murders a day at poor areas and it seems causal to them. Here in San Diego, It's huge news when 1 person gets killed.

So i think that it's true - Poor places, has ppl that will commit more crimes.

Rich ppl - martha, and some bussiness stuff - but thats not as common. They cheat and stuff, but thats not a crime. They just sue the hell out of the other person, so they don't need murder.

You don't understand. It's not just in poor places, but crime is more likely to happen in poor areas. Crime is more prevalent there because in most cases, people are less educated or lack the resources to survive.

No I dont believe that.... anyone can steal... even the insanely rich people they just dont have what it takes to do theft's and such.... most of them anyway.

I live in a an area where there areas arounda re remotely poor and there is barely any burglaries or theft's going on, and I live in Los Angeles California. The state and city with the highest crime rate is Washington second being New York... statsically anyway

absolutely not, Crime happens everywhere but i was reading this magazine and it said that 3 out of 5 people are killed in nice parts of the town or city because its more likely that no one will ever find out. So yeah, where i live its a latino based community (next to chicago) and people just assume that there's a lot of crime hera but in reality there isnt. so anywho, crime happens everywhere.

this also requires some knoledge of human physcology.

On stealing:

humans naturally have a tendency that some of them like risks and some don't...

if humans never took risks we'd still be in the tree (evolution, but if you don't belive, america would have never revolted and no US would be formed.)

however; if every human took risks we'd all die out.

so; people get an adrenaline rush when they steal. it's a risk. you might get caught.

some people enjoy the rush; some don't.

those that do will are more likely to steal for fun.

there are also those who cannot afford certain things, like say a cool shirt. their want of the item will overpower thier fear of the risk, and they will try to steal it.

however; if sucessful it reduces the percived risk.

now how this applies:

adrenaline junkies can get thier adrenaline rush many ways. skydiving, rock climbing. extreme sports. however; extreme sports cost a pretty penny to participate in, whereas shoplifting costs nothing and you get something.

therefore; if we assume the amount of adrenaline junkies in rich and poor people is the same (%) then we can say that rich adrenaline junkies are more likely to turn to extreme sports than poor people.

thus leaving the poor with a higher percent of probablitly to shoplift.

On the second: it's a bit obvious that people who steal (the first time) because they can't afford something are not rich.

if you want to factor in the peer pressure you'd have to look at sociology.

crimes like murder and rape also work like this a bit;

if you're rich you can pay a hit man.

heck, if you're poor you can too. 500 bucks or so.

it`s called "STEROTYPING", and obviously most people think that poor people are criminals, while rich people are the perfect American citizens. Wow...quite sad. Which do you see more on the front page of the newspaper...rich celebrities/people murdering/raping/molesting? or poor black people in harlem, nyc ... robbing people. Yeah, that's what I thought.

im kind of on both sides. example, if you go take a walk in san francisco, you have more of a weird feeling because of the poor conditions.

and hte other hand, poor people /= more crimes. like you said, it can happen anywhere.

I don't believe poor people commit more crimes. They just get cuaght more because the police are more likely to be hanging around their part of town.

I know many rich kids who steal, fight, and have breaking and entering charges. On the outside everything might see fine but it isn't. Becuase i am just as scared walking in downtown atlanta as i am walking in buckhead. Rich people can just hide their crimes more efficently because they have the funds to

i believe it. i go to a suburbian school with some rich EFFin kids. hardly anything goes down. 99% of my friends go to city schools and i hear about a minimum of 3 fights a day.
*

My school is 60% black, and we have about 3 fights a day also. Polic patrol the schools because we always have someone with crack or weed, and with my dad being a policeman, I hear on his scanner how the gym is being broken into about 10 times a day. Btw, my school is in the corner of the "ghetto"

But my friend goes to another school that is about....2% black, and there is a fight about twice a year, noone has ever brought weed to school, noone breaks into anything, and their school is in a nice neighborhood.

I am not trying to be racist or anything, I love my black folks. ^^

Yes but i'm at a private school with some INSANELY wealthy people, and cell phones still get stolen, people are still on weed, and still get into fights

Being rich doesn't mean you dont have problems, it just means you can afford the really GOOD ones

Well, umm.. it depends upon the people, really. o.0 someone can be rich, and still commit a crime. No legal way to buy death of course...

That stuff is like over-underground stuffs. Like when you have like these huge gang/mob/mafia whatever you want to calll them people. And they want something, the will just kill someone.

*shrugs*

Being rich can alter your mind for greed *shrugs* and greed, when not fed, and give extreme emotions, and then turn to violence.

So, eh...

Different places different crimes, rich neighborhoods doesn't neccesarily mean that they are angels they just have a way to work around the system or not get noticed. Poor neighborhoods, not all are bad, a steriotype made by hollywood and their stupid movies. Not saying that drive bys and other crime doesn't happen. Everyone is a potential criminal, doesn't matter race, gender, or anything.

Quite true, but don't forget white collared crimes. Embezzlement? Those sort of crimes are very common and I may be wrong here, but I think statistically higher than blue collared crimes. Look at Martha Stewart for example. Whether you are a follower or not, she commited a white collared crime.

DMX..... rich rapper but he goes and steals a car..
Sometimes, the code on the street makes any gang members to prove their mettle once in a while to keep alive. It's sorta society in which if you don't commit crimes, you're dead.

Many people do it out of that reason too, to stay in the gang, the only real family they feel they have.

most of it will probably occur in poor "ghetto" areas because they odn't have a lot of money and can't take care of themselves. they'll try to steal, and they'll be aggressive which can lead to violence and crime.

I know that few poor people here in my state rapes children................ or steal moneys from elementary kids who walks to school from home.

I live in Shoreline, Washington near Seattle.... so yeah... I remember when I was inside my mom's car waiting for my mom while she's shopping by herself in the marshall's store... this poor guy, he came crashing to my mom's car window and just talking gibberish at me... he also had black powdery face... and he was like threatening me.

I was so scared that i even turned on the radio station... to the spiritual songs like the Christian songs lol... then he was gone... it was kinda weird cause out of nowhere he appeared... and just scared me like hecka....

But I don't think all poor guys does the crime heh... or wait... I'm thinking poor as in people who has a low income and also people who lives in the street... yeah I guess they do a lot of crimes than rich people...

well, it's all about values and influence. those who are extremely poor have often been neglected and most likely did not have much moral influence in their lives.

i agree. poor people cant get what they want that easily becuz of the fact they are poor and economically challenged and thus they do whatever it takes to enjoy the things that rich people have, if it means commiting a crime to get it.
