Only if we invade.

The goal of each nation is survival. If they nuke us, they will be turned into glass. Thus, they have no reason to do so unless they are already about to be turned into glass, i.e. if we invade/attack them first.

With the placement of interceptor missiles in Alaska by late 2004 President Bush will fulfill his promise to American people. The timing coincides with the presidential election on 02 November 2004.

If they try to nuke us, we'll have interceptors. And then, most likely, we'll counter. The real problem is, if NK has nukes, other Asian countries (especially Japan) will want to start researching nuclear weapons development.

I think I read that our interceptors have a 10-30% chance of working. Send up 3-10 times the amount of missiles being sent at us, and it's covered. We can take out 5 missiles. What we can't do is shoot down several hundred missiles, which is what would have happened if we had a nuclear war with the USSR.

What else do we have? Boeing has a modified 747 that has a laser, which shoots down missiles before they leave the Earth (problem is, getting the YABL in NK airspace). Also, don't we have Brilliant Pebbles in space? I think that was a proven system.

edit: i think it's more likely that NK's missiles will miss/not even make it off the launch platform...

they don't have to make it, they just have to make it close enough.

the boeing laser is still in concept phase... it's never been tested on a missle. the just tested whether you could put it in a plane just recently.

there is one way that is proven to work... the nuclear inteceptor... where you just blow the missle out of the sky... people didn't like it...

and how do we know we're the target? a much better target is japan.

the treaty that ended WWII prevents japan from having a military... so the US has to defend them according to the treaty.

all they have to do is nuke japan, and the US has to attack NK, or default on it's treaty and face the concequences (from world hating us more to the world going to war with us)

woah! it seems like people have forgotten about the whole N.K. thing. scary thing is they could if they wanted to they are close enough. and the other problem is if they do bomb us and they don't bomb america they could bomb our major sea ports in the Phillipean (sp?) islands. but i dunno if they would or not

I don't necessarily think we are enemies, really, just not on the greatest terms. I also heard it is rather expensive in Korea. Anyone know for sure?

Not true! Japan has their own defense force, the JASDF.

They're still making weapons too, in fact, the Japanese Kongo Class Destroyer is arguably superior to the US Arleigh Burke Class destroyer.

However, Japan has no aircraft carriers, or anything of the sort that can deliver weapons over really long distances for an attack (except for a few transport ships that bring peace patrol troops).

Japan is definitely not the military machine it was during WWII, but calling it defenseless without US' protection is incorrect.

QUOTE

Which is why Japan is threatening to cut off humanitarian supplies.

QUOTE

You know why people don't like it? Because they are still thinking of the Soviet days, when they could launch a bajillion ICBMs at us. In that case, a nuclear interceptor would be ineffective, and the only solution would be to launch our entire nuclear arsenal at them. However, in the case of North Korea, which doesn't have a bajillion nukes, an interceptor system is MUCH more effective.

They've actually fired the laser while on the plane now, but testing it on a ballistic missile will probably take place next year.

Yeah it's Bill Clinton's fault, but what you said is not entirely true. If I remember correctly, Bill Clinton gave North Korea nuclear materials for a chance for negotiation, as long as Kim Jong-Il used it for powerplants rather than bombs.

But, pointing the finger is not going to solve anything now.

No, North Korea got nuclear materials by 1990 and used them to blackmail Clinton into giving them economic aid.

the point of giving them processed fuel is it prevents them from needed to have enrichment plants. all spent fuel must be returned. if any isn't, we know they're making bombs.

Well, I don't know enough about this topic to say...I don't think they will, unless Bush decides to do another stupid thing during his presidency and invade them.

Btw, on that site, aren't they talking about North Korea? They have a South Korea flag on it lol. laugh.gif

I hope North Korena Never Drops A Nuclear Bomb On Any Country. I'm a Pacifist!! But if they ever do they'll suffer a terrible tragedy! the U.S. has nuclear bombs and many of them. The U.S. is just hiding them, why does the U.S. want to take away nulcear bombs from other countries but still keep its own??? calls for a new topic. But yeah, if North korena bombs the U.S. then they'll suffer what Japan suffered during WWII.

I think the US has openly stated more than one time that they posess nuclear warheads and the ability to make nuclear bombs. The US also has the MOAB --Mother Of All Bombs-- which was built for the war in Iraq. The bomb carries 18,000 pounds of explosives. It replaces the Vietnam Daisy Cutter, a 15,000-pound bomb with 12,600 pounds of the less-powerful GSX explosives.

I don't think we HAVE to invade or nuke NK. at the very least, we should defend Japan, even though they do have a very capable defense force.

i don't know if we'd nuke NK, I think we'd just cut all aid, most countries will follow suit and NK will starve.

but we are, by treaty, the army of Japan.

they have a small defense force, but if they were to do anything most likely they'd want the US to do it.

if NK nuked japan, the japanese would demand we nuke them, or invade. they don't have the millitary to do this.

if we refuse, then they will be resentful at us for violating the treaty and would probably build up thier own military for a strike back.

japan would revert to the imperialistic times of WWII

NOrth Korea wouldn't nuke China because Bush mentioned that if he went into NK China would be on NK's side and the US would get screwed. I doubt NK will even use their nukes unless the US decides to invade them...

what reasons would china have to side with north Korea?

China is only communist in name only now (with a few exceptions).

China enjoys a lot of good trading with the United states. They'd loose a lot of money if we cut that off (which would happen if there was a war.)

china wants good relations with the US.

i think Bush is thinking too much along the korean war times.

We aren't the army of Japan, but we are obligated to protect them under the SEATO agreements.

I doubt the US will refuse support to Japan in any case.

China borders NK, and would get nervous if the US landed on NK soil.

What did Bush do? NK is the one mobilizing, we haven't moved against them.

I don't think so.

China is essentially a super-socialist nation now. It'll be tough to keep double digit growth with the amount of control over the economy the government has.

Ireland has been able to keep growing due to the fact that there is a really really low taxes and a really capitalist economy.

Can China match this while remaining socialist? I don't think so.
