i'm im prayer group at school, and my teacher adopted a poor family that lives alllll the way in peru for x-mas. well i got put in the group with a 12 yr. old boy named Juan.have any ideas on what i can get him? keep in mind that they speak spanish and they are poor so they probably dont have electronics to play movies or cd's n stuff.

Get them an AK-47. Those are in high demand in that part of the world.

well, at church, we're covering shoeboxes with wrapping paper and filling it with stuff and sending them to 3rd world countries. oh and we're writing whether it's for a boy or girl and age group.

in mine i put things such as flip-flops, toothbrushes, toothpaste, school supplies, slinky, barbie doll, hair scrunchies, brush, mirror, paper, notepads, 'sanitary items'...

i think thats good, or just give them some money in a card..?

whatever it is, get them stuff they need first, before you get into toys, etc..

That's sweet of you for doing that. I used to do it when I was in Private School. I'd go with the others and do a fund raiser then buy him clothes. That would be nice. <3

I say clothes, balls to play with?
I don't think you should send him stuff that sends him the idea like.. 'America's so great, look what WE have and YOU don't!'. I think you shouldn't try to impress anyone, just think of things that would really help Juan out.

i didn`t mean it like that. not anything about bragging. i meant it as so he can atleast see some sites that he can`t because he`s all the way in Peru. i mean i don`t think America`s that great but those books brings out the highlights of the country.

Well, if he sees it.. he'll want to move here more, and then be depressed because he sees how great new york is and what peru isnt.

I don't really think style is the biggest concern in Peru.

hats, crayons, toys, school supplies, hygiene items... there are a lot of things to consider. Do you know anything else about the boy aside from his name and age? Like size and what he likes to do in general?

hmm books in spanish
ordinary toys that to some of us might seem like um stupid i guess... because like i went to mexico over the summer and i like stayed in this village called sahcaba for about 4 days and everyone there is hecka poor but like little boys and girls play with ordinary things because they have nothing else you know? and we might like overlook something as not a toy or fun but to them it is..so yeah
or like a ball..like basketball etc.
necesities: clothes, shoes, etc

Clothes and shoes are a must. Over in Peru it's really hard for parents to buy that for their children. Also do you know if he goes to school? Not many kids over there have that opportunity, but if you can find out and if he does, then get him some school supplies too.

I'd say buy hygenic items or maybe a blanket. A nice warm, blanket. If Juan lives in the Andes, he'd be really cold.

What is with all you guys and iPods and Game Boy Advances? Do you really think a poor boy in Peru needs iPods and Game Boys? HONESTLY.

What the sensible person would get is shoes, clothes, blankets, food, vitamins, toiletry, and maybe to start a fund for a fresh water well.

No person can enjoy life without steady, strong surroundings. Just like no civilization was able to build and expand their country's lifestyle without a good foundation with their basic needs. What good would Juan get from a bunch of toys that require BATTERIES? Consider the fact that maybe he doesn't even have money to buy food, let alone batteries.
