Yet, I can speak it as if I were a fob. It's just something I picked up naturally. |

My parents are Chinese, and I grew up in China so...Chinese just stuck to me.
Even when I came to the U.S. my mom forced me to speak Chinese at home. Now I see it's a good thing she did, 'cause it'd be sad if I "forgot" my native language. |

Yup. They're both from Hong Kong, and I lived there for two years before immigrating to Canada. I go back to Hong Kong at least once a year, and my parents regularly speak to me in Cantonese. I listen to Canto songs, watch Canto TV shows, listen to Canto radio...go to Chinese school and learn Mandarin, Hanyu Pinyin and Cantonese. I can speak Cantonese as fluently as someone from Hong Kong, but I can also speak English just like someone who was raised here all their life. It's a shame I can't really read or write Chinese as well as I would like to... =\

Errr, Thai was my first language, but then I stopped using it when I entered Kindergarten...Now I suck at Thai, but I want to learn more. I can read it more than I can speak it.
I'd like to learn Lao, my mom's famly can speak it. |

Yes. My parents are from India and they speak Bengali and a little Hindi. I grew up speaking fluent Bengali, but after I learned English in school, I completely stopped speaking it. But I still use it because my parents speak it at home, so it's nice to speak in Bengali to them.

yes, mandarin. theyre native plus we go to china every year which really helps. i also go to chinese school, but it kinda doesnt help cause its so boring and we all talk in english to each other.
when people say fluently, does that mean that they really know the complicated words? cause i dont sound foreign but i can speak relatively simple words. |

yeah, they taught me cantonese... well they spoke it to me when i was little and then i knew. i only speak cantonese to my grandma and mom but not my dad for some reason. im going to be learning mandarin soon so imma commit to learning it. lots of old chinese dialects (i.e shanghainese) are dying, so we gotta keep speaking the dialects also/teaching it inside the families or who knows what will happen.

my mom taught me hers... i'm not sure how to spell it. it's like 'toy-san' or something. hardly anyone has heard of it, and practically no one actually speaks it...
"do you speak chinese?" "yea" "what kind?" "toy san" "what...? |
