For instance, eating beef is normal but if you eat ostrich meat (or something like that), it seems to be cruel. Why is that?

Do you think all animals should be treated equally or not?

I personally think that all animals should be treated equally. There are a lot of vegetarians out there that thinks that and the majority of them became vegetarians because they don't like animals to suffer. I think its wrong but then again, we all enjoy meat and the taste of it. I wouldn't know what to do...because I think its wrong. I don't know.

i eat ostrich. i love it. it's like a cross between pork and beef, but tender like veal.

it is superb.

and no, it does not taste like chicken.

generally, the more fluffy an animal, the less it's acceptable to eat it.

I eat meat because i love animals. they taste good.

meat is not murder. what you mean to say is killing animals is murder.

yet i ask you where the cow would be today if not for humans eating them.

let's take the buffalo and the cow- buffalo were hunted, cows were raised then killed.

there are millions of cows today.

the american buffalo is exinct.

sure, they live a life in which they're purpose is to die. but everything that lives dies, and buffalo have stopped living.

if we didn't raise domestic animals, we would be the only species in many parts of the world.

They can't really be treated equally, in my opinion, because they all have different worths. Each species is unique so I don't think anyone can treat them all equal. That would lead to insanity.

Hm.
I guess it seems like beef/chicken/pork and such don't matter as much when you eat them, because it's not rare to eat them, and the public is used to a large amount of people eating them.

If you eat something more rare like ostrich, or bison, or whatever.. people might think it's more cruel because it's not as heard of and stuff.

It's just a standard that has been set for thousands of years into the past.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that cow meat is the tastiest. You might try some ostrich meat and report back to us. I'd be interested to know sick.gif

Because ostriches are foreign to us, and are therefore more precious than a common cow.

i dont know....you have to draw the line somewhere on pet equality.

Like pet hospitals and pet clothes stores...people treat animals better than other humans...and I think thats messed up.

Vegetarians have issues.

Plants are just as alive as animals are. Feeling morally superior by only eating things that can't look or scream back is like feeling a serial killer feeling morally superior by killing only retarded people.

I think all animals should be treated equally. Americans want to stop the dog and cat meat markets in Asia which I definitely agree with, but there are slaughterhouses here. Pigs are as intelligent or more intelligent than dogs and cats are. It's wrong for some animals to be pets and others to be slaughtered and abused everyday.

Guys.. we're animals too, you know. ;]

First humans were probably hunters and gatherers if I'm not mistaken.. but if I'm wrong by any chance.. it's like comparing ourselves to hawks and birds and lions and antelopes. We're omnivores. happy.gif

as other people said before, your not supposed to eat ostrich meat because its more rare and its easy to find cows, pigs, chickens, etc.

oh and speaking of inequality, what d'you think about the banning (i think?) of pitbulls in canada? i think it isnt right because its not because of the breed. a lab could be bad, a german shepard could be bad. they shouldnt target just the pitbulls. _dry.gif

i've never heard of anyone eating ostriches blink.gif

but i suppose someone hearing of someone eating a dog or something, it strikes us as cruel because people keep those as pets. i suppose those who keep cows as pets (and don't eat them) see eating cows as cruel as well.

you cannot create equality within food.. its peole cultures and what is socially accepted, yet pl cannot get over the fact on what people do... i hate people that are disgusted at what cultures eat... like dogs in china or guinea pigs...yet they themselves are hipocrits(sp) becauser they eat cow whach in hindu belief is god....

The reason why animals are treated differently is mainly because of the way they look. Humans are more likely to be nicer to a mammal animal (horse, cat, dog) rather than an insect. Or anything that isn't cute and furry. That's why...I don't think it's cruel to eat Ostrich meat. It's just weird because I guess I am so used to cows being eaten. I do remember my Dad's friend brought over some Ostrich jerky over one time. I didn't eat it because 1) I am picky and 2) Eww. That doesn't sound good.

It's not cruel to eat ostrich meat because they aren't "cute and fuzzy"? mellow.gif
