faded background image, bg image not img |

does anyone know how to give the BACKGROUND image a faded look too...just like the code you can use for these types of images <img src="___"> becuz i have this really cool background but its too dark and i want it to fade.
even wen i put the fade code in it doesnt fade...only the OTHER images fade..if anyone knows how PLZ help me thank you so much: my xanga www.xanga.com/iM_nO_lOnGeR_mE

normally image effects in html and css coding like fading cant work on backgrounds, only up front images. but if you have an image editor like photoshop or something, you can do it like that.
