They are allowed in college classrooms, so why not in high schools? (Just don't take a call in class, because that is rude).

Why not? If you want to spend time chatting on the phone instead of getting your education, then, fine with me. I mean psh. There are some instances when you need to be contacted, even if you're in high school. I can't think of one off the top of my head, but they do exist. wink.gif

Cellphones are allowed in my school now, but we cannot use them during class but we can use them after, but I really don't see the point of it. Like what Kathleen said, I think we should be able to have cellphones in academic areas in case of emergency, also my teachers' phones ring all the time, I call it unfair but then again they grade us and boss us around. _dry.gif

oh they could.

i'm sure noone would talk on the phone during class and let everyone stare. whistling.gif

maybe it's just me, i was brought up in a really strict school *in hk* and i have these.... really.. close minded views..

But just think of it, are high school students really capable of controlling themselves in "not using the cells cause it's rude" ?

mellow.gif don't think so

*sidenote: stubborn.gif in my old school, i wear uniforms, and line up every morning in the center court, and cellphones, if found, are kept in the office

eh, I guess it would be okay to have cell phones in school. When you're in college (or my college) you are allowed to have them, as long as you turn your phones off or put them on silent while in class. However, a lot of people forget to turn off their phones in class, and their phones are always ringing disrupting the professor... biggrin.gif so I think that as long as students turn off their phones during class, and don't make phone calls during class then it's okay to have them in school...

In Florida... there was a new law made that students may have their cell phone on them in class... but if a teacher sees it they get it taken from them and they can get it at the end of the day...

This is pointless.

well. in our schools, they're not allowed, but that doesnt stop about half the school population from having phones anywys. heck, my mom got me a phone after the 'cellphone ban' went into effect. ;x

the thing is, i feel its one thing to have a cell but something else to have it on and using it during school. i mean, in this day& age, with all the technology going all, the phones can aid cheating to the Nth degree--text msgs answers around, as well as being able to use the calculators on a non-calculatory test or whatnot. besides, its really rude to be yapping away in class while the teacher is attempting to teach& educate the mindless masses. ;P

i'd have to go with: having a cellphone but turning it off during the school hours. having it turned on during lunch? perfectly fine. =)

they should be allowed but if ur in class and stuff, it would be really rude if ur talking on it. that person would deserve a slap if ther on the phone and their talking and it SHOULD be taken up then... but if u just have it in ur pocket and ur not using them in classes and stuff. it should be good..

my school district doesnt allow cell phones usages IN THE SCHOOL so i just carry in my pocket and when i go out i use it if i really need to.

They should be allowed. Just make the students take out the battery so it wont ring no matter what. Unless of course there is family emergencies. They can have it on with a parent's note.

that's the policy at my school. they're allowed, but should be turned off or on silent so they don't disrupt the class. eh- its only allowed because of what happened during 9/11, and since my school is so close to the WTC site, the principal allowed us to carry them. but, they shouldn't be used, only in times of emergency and if a teacher sees it (or it rings in class) the teacher can take it away.

i think its fine as long as people aren't talking louding on their cell phones. it would be even better if they don't use it during class. but people shouldn't get into trouble if they just have it.

well the problem with cell phones is not calling in class its mailing. most people will mail during class to their friendsi n the same class or w/ev

well this is how it is in japan anyway...its actually a big problem cause teachers dont notice and kids keep mailing and not listening to the teacher

cell phones were allowed in my h.s. i thought there's a new law allowing students to carry them now ever since 911. or is that just nyc? ;o

some students need their cells since they intern/work during, or right after, school hours. same with college students. it's rude to abuse the privelege by using it to chat with a friend though, but that's just common courtesy.

Yes, in case of emergencies.

BUT, it should not interfere with the student's classes and academics.

lets say, if a student was playing with his cellphone under his desk, that would not be allowed because it is a disruption.

Of course! Cell phones is a must nowadays. Wether you use for emergencies, girlfriends/boyfriends, or parents, cell phones can save ppl's lives. I always take my cell phone to school. They allow us to take it. But we can't use it during class time.

No because even though they might be allowed in college classrooms majority of the college students know when and when not to use them. And majority of the people in college probably values education and thats why they went there instead of just finishing highschool and getting a job right away.

But i think the kids in highschool are different. Im not saying that they can't be responsible but im just saying that there are alot of kids who think that education is not important.. So therefore having cellphones in hgihschool classes would abuse the other student's right to learn, it could be disruptive.

I say no. If you even allow kids to have their cells turned on during the school day for "emergencies" they'll be texting and calling eachother during class. Even if it isn't allowed that's never stopped them. People at my school do it all the time and have it down so well that they almost never get caught. When you're texting someone during class you aren't paying attention which can really cause your grades to suffer.

If you need to call your parents you can go to the office, they have phones there for you to use. Some schools have payphones, even if you don't have change you can call collect. If your parents need to call you they can call the school to have a message relayed to you.

Overall even allowing cell phones to be out and on during the school day isn't going to help at all. You don't need your cell phone during school.

cellphones should be allowed, since they say so themselves that were allowed to have it only incase of emergency but if there is an emergency call and youre not even allowed to have your phone on, whats the point? stubborn.gif i mean as long as you dont disturb anyone then its okay.
