Do any of you practice martial arts? If so, list the one(s) you study..

I took 6 months of TKD.. lately I've been taking private Jiu-Jutsu/Muay Thai instruction...

Drop some info on your school/ranking, or times Martial Arts has helped you out, physically OR mentally..

and hit me up on AIM if you want.. I love MA so it'd be great to talk about it (don't have to be about Martial Arts though)

sup smoke lol u already know martial arts is my life considering i school u on it all the time lol anyways

boxing:4 years of experiance
muay thai : 8 months
taekwondo: 2 years now
Brazilian jiujitsu:since I was 7 and im now 19

I train in boxing so i can be agreat puncher,
i train in muay that so i can be a great kickboxer
In taekwondo so I can be a great kicker
and in brazlian jiujitsu in case the fight goes to the floor and I have to apply a submission on the person or in case I ever have to fight a wrestler

i think im pretty well rounded martial arts wise, oh ive also done shorin ji ryu karate, i tried kung fu, and ive done shotokan karate, and a few months of capoeira, the only one i liked out of all of those was capoeira but yeah i quit those and i do the ones i mention on the top. any other cb martial artists here?

that's coo..

taekwondo seems to be the popular choice..

my instructor met royce gracie! =P hahaha..

I only got a blue belt in TKD.. well actually green belt/blue tip, but i had to quit the day before the test, so I WOULD have had that blue belt =(

I like Muay Thai a lot better though, the conditioning is outraegous..

my instructor and I went shin-to-shin before, just trading shin kicks back and forth to each other's shin.. his kicks sweeped me off the floor onto my chest each time haha.. then we kick each other full force in the stomach, the one getting kicked kneels down so there's no sacrifice of force for balance.. we also kick each other in the arms.. it hurts but I LOVE IT!! =)

he also teaches me Jiu-Jutsu.. I'm the armbar don baby haha =P

i agree, in my opinion taekwondo is not very realistic in a fight against another martial artist, but if u know tkd and ur fighting a reg street fighter its not so bad, but i dont like tkd, much, i only use its kicking techniques to mix it with the rest

Yeah.. I use TKD's hook kick, front kick, backspin kick, sidekick, and reverse sidekick..

but I use muay thai's knees and roundhouse kicks.. the TKD roundhouse isn't as effective -- just more balanced..

what i wouldn't do for a sparring partner =(

I did Aikido for a while, but didn't continue with it because I began working and going to school 24/7... literally. But my brother is doing well and is getting his black belt soon.

Aikido is awesome.

I'm thinking of starting.. I'm 13, average size, I work out a little.
Should I just go to my rec center and get some of those flyers on Martial Arts classes and call some teachers to join?

When I'm older, I hope to take some sort of Martial Arts. NO, not to go and kick someone's arse. But so I can defend myself in case I get jumped or something. I also want to learn to be more carefree and calm, as well as FLEXIBLE. I have a vert slow reaction rate lol. I react really slowly and I am so unflexible. Plus, I am so stressed and such and I want to learn to defend myself wink.gif

haha.. uh huh..

That's why Royce Gracie beat Dan Severn's Greco-Roman wrestling with Brazillian Jiu-Jutsu? You can't just up an assume wrestling beats all other martial arts.. that's not smart.

oh.. and to crazeegirl.. I'll talk to anybody about anything.. =D I was just mentioning Martial Arts since this is a Martial Arts thread..

Greetings!!

it's been 10 yrs since i first started on taekwondo. got ma black belt when i was like 15/16 yrs old... i've stopped training since den. i was too occupied wit other stuff and plus i was badly injured due to tournaments. i had a spine injury, dislocated wrist and i got knocked out by a 'back hook' to ma ear which sent me out uncounscious. since den, ma parents said "enuf is enuf" so yeah!!

^^ Jiu-Jutsu is a grappling art.. some don't like it 'cause it's "Too much like wrestling," but I enjoy performing the techniques and making people tap =P

Muay Thai is pretty hardcore.. I wouldn't suggest that unless you're really serious about it..

Tae Kwon Do is a good martial art to start out with, I think, although it focuses on kicks a lot more, it DID help me out..

BUT.. it's whatever floats YOUR boat.. Not every martial art is for every person...

I think the ONLY thing thats usefull from TKD is a couple of the Self defence Moves, the ones when the other person graps ur Arm ^^.... cuz like what other people said... the kicks and most of the other stuff aren't very realistic...

I dont' know why... but i really wanted to take up Judo... but then couldn't find a Decent place to learn @....

haha..

I don't assume wrestling beats martial arts, i dont even really care about martial arts that much cuz i dont really think it can save yer ass all the time. back to the guy getting beat up by that other guy...you think that just because this Royce Gracie guy beat a wrestler that means that his Jiu-jutsu is better? Thats like saying that a lineman can tackle a wide receiver, that means all lineman are better than all wide receivers. This Dan Severn guy probably didn't train as hard or didn't learn his whole lesson. The only reason i sed wrestling owns all other martial arts is because i kno ppl that spent like there whole childhood taking tkd or judo or kung fu tell me that wrestling can beat their martial arts

did u guys know that wrestling owns all forms of martial arts, i thought it was bull at first but then i found its true...kinda sux cuz martial arts has all these forms and belts and crap

Greetings, uneducated peon from four years ago. Wrestling is a martial art. In fact, wrestling and boxing were the first martial arts, or the first forms of organized combat, systemized by the Greeks around 700 B.C. before being combined into pankration in 648.

No doubt you will stumble upon this thread in a drunken stupor after a particularly harsh day, perhaps in being fired from that longstanding, supposedly secure job because you accepted bribes from a higher-up, or from being told by your beautiful fiancé that she's found someone else, someone with direction in his life. Just when you thought it couldn't get any lower, you'll realize how gravely you erred in this topic four years ago. And finally, the dam will collapse. You will break down and cry, tears streaming down your face like a colony of E. coli on room-temperature Canadian beef. And, at that precise moment, I will be laughing.
