No, you should always attack the person AND the argument.

If you attack the person, it destroys their credibility, which makes their argument less believable. If people don't believe him, you win.

yes, but it also destroys your credibility if you end up just bashing the other person.

it's much more effective to make the other person to look like a fool.

notice the biggrin.gif . the biggrin.gif shows that the post is sarcastic in nature, no?

rolleyes.gif that might work, but most people don't notice the eyeroll.

i find it easier to sound angry, then put a biggrin.gif at the end.

yes, the voice tone can't be conffered. smileys are sometime inadequet. ::sarcastically:: just makes it too obvious.

but i've made it work. you have to be blantenly obviously going agains all previous argments, with 'of course' ' it simply must be' s in it.

here's an example, from the god thread.

QUOTE( myself)
of course.  how could i forget? it had to be god who created everything, because of a book called the bible. which just happens to be written by people hearing god. how could i have belived that everything in the world came from a big bang? i mean, it's faith. people get this feeling which they call faith, and rely upon it.  how could i have missed it? of course some guy was just there and just happened to create the entire  universe. it's so obvious now. This guy just happens to be all powerful yet he need mortals  to help him. and there just happens to be someone that defys him, but he, being allpowerful, does nothing about it. this wonderful guy, capable of anything created the world. in doing so he also created disease. and what wonderfuldisease it is. and good poeple,  once struck by disease, he, the  good, kind, all powerful decides to save them. because he can. wow. i think i'll go to a church right now and convert. how was i sooo mistaken? how could i have questioned it so? i mean, there is no possible way it could be wrong.

that got through as sarcasm.

right. and when someone makes a personal attack on you and you don't care and shrug it off, it backfires and pisses off whoever make the attack because you didn't react like they wanted.

well usually personal attacks dont work because you usually dont know the person you are debating with, therefore how can it hurt you? But i guess it's just a slip of emotions... like you say things you dont mean... i dont know?

well, a personal attack on you, a general personal attack (one that could apply to anyone)

those would work. but if the reciver does nothing, usually, it makes the sender feel really stupid.

Well, if used sparingly and with prudence, I think emotion is good for debating... If you're passionate about something, you'll argue, lose, and will argue again until you're point is taken into consideration. Sometimes, people (like me) give too much emotion into a debate and that's when you'll have name calling and/or cursing.

And Mr. Acid, I don't understand sarcasm by other people, but I love using it. So kudos to you because I actually understand your sarcasm... most of the time.

haha. alright.

i love sarcasm. it's great. not very easy to use online tho.

i think emotion in a debate is ok, but not showing it.
if you appear unaffected by your oppenent's snide remarks, then the remarks will not work.

my favorite reply when someone calls me a name is 'why thank you biggrin.gif '
it flusters them quite so.
