Rage Against the Machine's 1992 track "Killing in the Name" officially beat out its closest competitor to become the No. 1 Christmas single in Britain.

The backstory: For the past 5 years, the winner of Britain's X-Factor (Britain's answer to American Idol, and also hosted by Simon Cowell) has topped the Christmas charts. Fed up, a British guy started a movement (via Facebook) to have Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" outsell the latest karaoke offering by Simon Cowell. He got enough support that RATM won. The proceeds are going to a British homeless group.

Here's Rage Against the Machine performing their song live on BBC:

My favorite line: "Simon Cowell is ... an interesting character who seems to have profited greatly from humiliating people on live television."
