i have split the main pic into the header and the side which should make up one picture but as you can see by the site they dont align

You need to add spacing to the top of your background image so it moves down and aligns with your top banner.

You have to fix the image manually on Photoshop or another image-editing program and re-upload it and set it as your new background.

Er...I assume you've already deleted the images, since your page doesn't have any. But you shouldn't have to manually do it in an editing program; you can just move the background with CSS:

50% puts the background in the middle of the page. -100px moves it down 100 pixels. You can fiddle with both numbers as you see fit.
