Using some free time that I had because I managed to finish like 3 of my projects already, I designed a myspace layout for my own myspace. I wanted to get an opinion of what you guys think.

I don't really think I'm liking the little navigation thing I have. Actually, I may just switch the page links with the main navigation links. shrug.gif C&C prz. Thanks. _smile.gif (By the way, this is only a mockup; not the actual coded layout.)

UPDATE #1: (Shortened main content text. Attained case-consistency. Made navigation sidebar links a dark gray. Altered comment box appearance and separated the box from the button. Lowered opacity of the circles bokeh in the top header content. Added a footer. Turns out I didn't save the PSD's for the icons, so I had to put a colored rectangle over the original "James Bond" text and replaced with "Mike Peters" text.)

I would tone down the white circles in the intro background - the white text is a bit hard to read right now. I would make the padding between the columns a little bigger and justify the text. Also, not really liking the underlined links, but that's minor. It looks pretty good overall.

Well, like I said, it's only a mockup so the padding and all that will be handled when it's coded. Also, when the links are hovered on, the line disappears -unless maybe I should switch that around? shrug.gif But yeah, I'll tone the circles some, thanks Gabrielle. _smile.gif

I agree with Gabrielle (I'm always saying that, aren't I? lol) But yeah. Overall it does look nice. I like the brushes you used.

Very clean, I like it. If I'm gonna nit-pick:

- Like already said, dim the circles a bit. They should be almost invisible, like the shadows around your boxes.
- For the comment box, why not give it the same gradient and shadows as the rest (subtle differences, of course)? Make the button separate from the textarea, and give them both that quiet shadow.
- There's something about the folded corners that irks me a bit. I think it's because they seem flush against the background. Maybe instead of folding them, curve them?
- Change the "James Bond" to your name. Looks too much like a stock icon right now.
- Sidebar font, down about .2em. Main text, up about .2em, and shorten it. There's a limit to how much people are actually going to read.
- If you're going to have the envelope on the opposite side as the other icons, make the navigation itself different from the others. A darker grey would probably work nicely.
- Case consistency: either make the headers of the sidebar lowercase, or capitalize the headers in the content area. It looks weird as it is now.
- Softer shadow on your default photo to match with the sidebar sections.

+3 for using Yasny's brushes! Don't forget to credit her.

Also, a side note: are you planning on using Flash? If you're not, it'll really get to be a pain in the ass updating your statistics. And DHTML isn't a syntax -- it's just a term saying that there's HTML and HTML DOM/Javascript (which you can't even use on Myspace anyway) and splendiferous CSS.

Wow, thanks Elia! Yeah, Yasny's brushes are friggin' awesome, so I'll be sure to credit her.

Oh, and I know that DHTML really isn't a syntax, I just put it as a filler when I was designing. shrug.gif Well see, I'm not going to use Flash, I'll just update it manually, and it won't be like in the other dynamic pages I'm going to make. It'll really be easy to update the friends part; I hardly ever add anyone myself. As for the profile views, I think I'm just planning on replacing that with the CreateBlog Tracker. For the comments, I have to approve them anyways so that will be easy to update as well. Although, I don't really want to curve the folded corners because 1) I kind of dislike curved stuff like you're mentioning and 2) I think it'll sort of take away from the design so I think I'll just lower the gradient on the folded corners some. As for the comment box, I tried using a gradient (the same one reversed and then a bit darker, gray one) but it didn't really go well with the blue stroke. I'll separate the button and the box though. Should I change the color of the stroke or what gradient should I use (the same, darker, different colors, etc.)?

But yeah, thanks for the advice Elia! I'll go edit it some right now. (Oh, and btw guys, the reason why the sidebars and the main content are close to each other is because I was using guides when designing and I guess I tried to make them fit in.)

the 'about the owner' and 'about the site' is a bit too big. maybe a bit smaller? just a teeny bit. quite like the header. and the flower swirlies are quite nice too. something about the bigness of the font in 'navigation/recent entries....' are just a tad weird. i dont know.

Mk. The reason I made some of those links bigger though is because they're more... important? :P But thanks Julia.

I think I was reaaally tired when I mentioned that. I like the folded corners better now :P

This is sort of what I meant by the comment box:

The statistics actually shouldn't be too bad in Flash, if you wanted the nifty-ness. Just have a counter embedded that you start at your current views, an online now thing, and use cURL to check your Myspace page for the number of friends and comments (I can help you with the cURL/online if you need, not the Flash). You could even do the same with the updates, synching with a Twitter account or something.

edit: This might be the grammar Nazi coming out, but I think you should take the "Anyways" out of the header, since that's usually used when coming back from a tangent. Doesn't really fit, since you didn't trail from the message.

Oh cool, that actually looks pretty nice. Haha, I'll be sure to edit my careless grammar. tongue.gif Honestly, I actually feel like just replacing the Statistics module with a Twitter Updates module. :|

Once you get past the header and nav everything seems so big. Also change the James Bond thing to your nae ( don't know if you just haven't got to it yet or if it was intentional) Other than that I like it.

Ok, updated. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the icons' PSD's so I had to manually change the "James Bond" text with a colored rectangle and my own name. Also, I somehow managed to lose the PSD for the display picture so I couldn't lower the shadow of it (yes, I know it was dumb of me to make a separate PSD of that, D'oh!)
