I randomly had the idea for making these. I LOVE them. C&C them! I'm finishing the layouts.

I'm going to use the moon one for my FA version 2 lay and the tree one for Love Season.

Here they are:
(these are re-sized. The actual banners are bigger.)

To be honest, I'm not seeing anything good about them. They both look like a little kid hand drew them in kindergarten. I'm not trying to be mean, but I really think you can do better work.

You probably shouldn't make a topic about how amazing your graphics are, especially with your track record here. Go in expecting the worst and you won't get such negative comments.

They kinda just look like stuff I used to make in Paint before I got serious about designing. You need to pick more natural colors and work on making everything look a bit more...real.

You've been posting long enough to know how harsh people here could be. I suppose things could have been worded a little more politely, but I don't even think any of the more experienced and skilled designers here talk about how amazing their graphics are before getting feedback. You're setting yourself up pretty high with that kind of statement. It's great that you're proud of yourself, but you kinda set yourself up for the worst from people. ermm.gif

tbh, they look horrible.
I personally think that blending or cobbing is your strong point. Try to make that better instead of trying to find a ton of new styles you can't do very well.

Why don't you bug Gabi or Ricky or something and try to get them to show you how they do their cartoon stuff?
(sorry guys xD)

^lol dude youre always sucking their dicks. and she's obviously not doing the 'cartoon stuff' right now, and not about to change her hobby.

btw, i've seen that you read a lot of tutorials. while tutorials are useful, they're also quite trivial. just read it, understand the techniques, and move on. what you should do though, is observe other work. look at designer and art blogs, get inspiration, maybe learn some art theories or whatever. get to know what's visually pleasing. im not trying to bash you or whatever, but if you find my suggestions not helpful, don't hate on me or something.

I've been doing that. I haven't posted on here since like the end of may beginning of June. I've been working with GIMP a WHOLE LOT more & I just randomly started this.

I never hate on people, i don't even know how to 'hate on' someone. Lol.

1 thing I don't understand is why people here are so harsh. Just because they are good at website stuff doesn't mean everyone is. They could be A LOT nicer. I mean, I'd do exactly what you did, talk NICELY to people and don't say "sure" when someone says "my amazing ___." They could say what they don't like and what they should improve on.

For example, if I didn't like the way my headers look, I'd say, "I don't like these because it doesn't look you put much effort into it, or something like that. Try looking at more tutorials and working with GIMP a little more." <= Nice.
What most of you guys say like, " You have already decided what they are so there is no need for me to say anything. But I would suggest you find a new hobby." or "They kinda just look like stuff I used to make in Paint before I got serious about designing. You need to pick more natural colors and work on making everything look a bit more...real." are meaner things to say.

Please, you guys just tell me why you are so mean.

Hate to break it to you, but people aren't going to sugarcoat everything for you so you're not offended. As I said twice before already, you can't preface something like that and not expect some nasty comments.

I actually gave you a little tidbit of advice on how to make it better, and if you want to just disregard that as a rude comment, go ahead.

Brutal guys, damn.

theerinkal - you have to admit that you sort of set yourself up for failure because of the way you set this thread up, right? It's never a good idea to post your work with the premise that it is "amazing." That's just common sense.

Now, I actually think that these are cute. However, they are very elementary and I mean that in the most literal way. My son, who is in elementary school drew these types of pictures when he was in kindergarten.

So, how about considering this work to be the beginning of some potentially amazing work? Find and work through some tutorials that will assist you in growing as a designer. Don't give up because people criticize you (nicely or otherwise) and always remember that the best type of artist is a humble artist.

You're always going to get some form of criticism for something and it's just going to have to be something you have to deal with (whether you like it or not), so suck it up, and stop being so childish. We're not being mean, we're just criticizing so you can take those faults that are pointed out and improve on them. It takes a while to actually become really good at graphic design so don't expect that after just a few months that you're an expert just because you read tutorials and stuff. Once you actually make something appealing and that flows well together, then you'll be recognized as "good". Hell, even I have some kind of faults in my designs sometimes but if I do, I try my best to improve on them. I'm not saying I'm an expert and all, because I'm not, but due to the criticism I took here, I became better and I keep trying to get better. It's not really a big deal, k?

^This. Yeah, people can be insulting sometimes, but that's life, y'know. No one here is obligated to be kind just because you posted. It's better not to call your work something like "amazing" or "awesome" because chances are that someone will think it's the exact opposite. I've had that happen time and time again. It happens to the best of designers.

Try not to get too defensive. Even though it's a natural reaction, it prevents you from learning and improving. It took me five years to get half-way decent at designing, just saying.

I can't really say much about the banners and image. They honestly do look like what I used to to in Paint when I was little. If that was the look you were going for, it fits perfectly.

Just keep practicing. (:

Oh wow @ this whole topic.

Erin, they're cute but not "amazing" imo. When I clicked on this topic I was expecting a lot more. Like various people have said, not everyone sugar coats things. That's just life. Not everyone is going to nice. You just really need to take their criticism into consideration to becoming a better designer. Two pairs of eyes are better than one. I mean what's the point of posting in the Showcase Booth? To showcase your work and get opinions. You know that there will be something things people don't like and they will tell you. In a nice way or in a mean way. But enough about all that. Just... try something new. What if you try and vector all this? That could be a start.

How long do you spend time on these? You realize the better you want things to look then your going to have to spend more than 5 minutes on it.

First image is really bland. Even though the night scenery isn't that active to begin with you could definitely do more with it. Like add a little texture to the moon and maybe some type of shine to the stars.

Second image the tree looks messy and childish. Its like finger painting to be honest. The tree is dull there are only solid colours to it. Add some shades. Trees have different shades of green not just one colour. The trunk blending is very very messy. Also the apples are just dotted circles. First take away some of them and add a little shape and more colour to them.

and we're not harsh we are trying to help you
But alot of us are getting frusterated because it really seems like everything we say to you just gets ignored.

Just like the others Said, Its very bland and childish, kindof looks unprofessional especially if these s are layout headers
The picture needs contrasts and some type of movement, shadings and mixes of colours
And its look really bad when you show "fingerpainted 5 year old pictures" to people and say 'these are the best borders ever'

And some of the critiques you are given are harsh in all, but thats how you get better, Dont just be ignorant, Truth Hurts

Now if you dont get what some people are saying about shading and adding more details this may be a good example

Now it may not be the best, but its a good "visual"

Although this is going to have nothing to do with the designs, because I'm sure she knows how the majority feels (and I agree with the majority), OP should know from experience how people react to her work. When she posts it's "amazing" she's setting herself up. This whole topic started wrong. theerinkal, you need to realize that the designers that we have here are top notch, so seeing something that looks like it was scribbled in paint isn't going to get great constructive criticism. Long story short, it looks like you're not putting any effort into your work, but are asking talented designers to put an effort in giving you feedback.

When it comes to the designs, try Nat's idea and vector something. Scratch this, read some tutorials on vectoring in GIMP. Find something simple to vector and put hard work into it. If you don't make an effort to try people's recommendations then I don't understand why you're asking for them in the first place.

Just sayin'.

i would never start a thread saying how amazing something is - even if you do consider them really good!
i mean, like everyone said, when posting you should probably expect somebody to diss on you..
but it takes a mature person to take the criticism and turn it into a source of growth, to get better.

best of luck, and cute banners.

Vectoring looks rediculously hard. I'm not ready to try vectoring. My first vectors would probably look like normal graphics. I've tried pixeling and I also suck at it. I can't do any pixeling worth CRAP & I'm pretty sure it would be the same as vectoring.

I know that. If you guys haven't noticed I haven't posted on here since early june late july.

It doesn't get ignored but I can't possibly remember EVERYTHING you guys say. I mean, I've got school starting in 2 weeks & I have to get ready for it. & Jugling soccer, basketball, web/graphic design, & school is going to be much harder since I'm officially going to be a Junior in High School.

I'm trying to do that, I just don't think I've had enough experience working with this yet.

I still don't see why they have to be jackass's when someone says "my amazing ___." & They aren't amazing. I mean I have feelings.

The point is that I can't vector just yet, I'm NOT that good.

Oh Btw
As some people were saying you were being a little shallow that your werent taking the cirtisism that were giving to you

I looked at your site (just to peek) and saw this on the bottom
-Quoted by your layout site
"Questions I'd like you to answer in a comment:
What do you think of my layout? HONESTLY! I want constructive criticism." "
So here is the crituques that you were asking already

Oh God.
I love fire an all, but no. Just no.
Fire doesn't look anything like that.

I don't see how that fire doesn't look good. I really like the way it looks. What's wrong with it?

QUOTE(AutumnSunsets @ Jul 23 2009, 09:03 AM) *
hey we judge HONESTLY, if you can't handle that...
than maybe you shouldn't ask.

Then maybe you guys shouldn't give me any. All of the advice has been given already like Mike said.

then maybe you shouldn't ask for advice, i know you probably worked hard on them, or that's what you think, but you can do a lot better, we're pushing you to do better,
not making fun of you, but when you come out and say AMAZING, we expect amazing on CB. yet you give us this easy childish drawings that i can do in 10 seconds. its kind of a killer so what reaction do you think you were going to expect: ANGER/RAGE

topic names matter, pick your topic names wisely next time: something like:
critique me
what do you think
judge my graphics
my headers, any comments?

This has definately gotten a little out of hand. It looks like everyone has had their say (multiple times), and this is never going to end otherwise.

Theerinkal, if you really feel like you need to respond to someone's post that you haven't already, you can do it through PMs.
