Four of the guys behind the The Pirate Bay, the largest torrent tracker in the world, were found guilty of being "accessories to copyright infringement", and sentenced to 1 year in jail and a $3.56 million fine. There are a lot of subtleties in this case. For example, The Pirate Bay's servers only enabled people to share copyrighted files; no copyrighted material actually passed through the servers. Does merely enabling the distribution of copyright materials make a server administrator an "accessory to copyright infringement"? Are copyright laws becoming outdated? Is this an example of a court bowing to corporate pressure over the good of society, or is sharing music and movies inherently immoral?

i'm so sick of the buy vs download-for-free debate. what do people actually want to happen? that none of these musicians/artists get paid for selling their art? there are two extremes: 1. to never pay for music 2. to "legally" obtain them, regardless of buying the actual CD or buying digital formats. there can never be a grey area, because so far i don't see any actual legal way to enforce it.

No, TBP is absolutely awful, but that doesn't make this any better.

How's piratebay awful? I'd like to be aware as I've never had a problem with their services.

Have you ever been invited to a private tracker? Worlds of difference.

Private trackers are definitely the way to go.

No, actually I haven't... but how does it make it a world of difference?..

a) you're infinitely less likely to get caught downloading from a private tracker
b) most everything tends to be consistently seeded because you have to maintain a ratio (also means better seeding to leeching ratio)
c) quality of torrents is highly regulated
d) everything downloads a hell of a lot faster

etc etc etc

Once you learn that there's better things out there, you'd never even dream of going back to something TPB. Christ, just using Demonoid makes me unhappy.

Well, Demonoid has had its share of problems as well. That site is far too scrutinized as it is.

Hm... interesting but... the first example you gave, I'm not entirely sure about that. Your ISP knows... and if they know, then there's really no "privacy".

Google will have it's day in court someday, as for now, it's your day.

Google has/had lawsuits filed against them, although for various other reasons beyond this controversy. IDK if TPB is raking in revenue, but I'm sure Google can easily foot $3.6 million, should that be the case.
