QUOTE
Rome, Italy (AHN) - Dozens are dead and thousands left homeless after a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy Monday, according to various media outlets.

The earthquake struck at around 3:30 a.m. Italian time about 95 miles northeast of Rome. Most of the damage occurred near the city of L'Aquila, the capital of Italy's mountainous Abruzzo region, CNN reported. About 60,000 people live there.

Various reports have the death toll close to 30 and counting. Rescue crews are still combing through the rubble of collapsed buildings, and the death toll is expected to climb, officials say.
