So, I came to the conclusion that my computer takes eons to load up. Is there anything I can do to make my computer run faster? I usually have about 3 - 4 processes running at the same time (firefox, photoshop, a music player (itunes, zune, windows media) and maybe word), and sometimes my computer freezes, but the internet is fast and I dont have any viruses, so what would some of you techies recommend?

Care to post computer specs? Do you know how much RAM you have?
Also, there's a chance you have a lot of processes running that you don't even know are running. What you can do is go to the start menu -> click run -> type in msconfig. The two right-most tabs should be process tabs of what loads when you load your computer. If you see things you obviously don't care about and know what they are, like msnmsgr or ituneshelper, you can uncheck those so they don't load when you load your computer. Other things you'll want to keep on, though, because if you uncheck it your wireless card (if you're using one) might get turned off lolol (not that I've ever done that!). If you don't know what the process is, you can check it out in google or something and find out if it's essential, what it does, or if it's bloat, etc. get more ram, or get a new processor. this also happened with me.. it was my processor.. dumb Core 2 Duo.. Get a Core i7 :D Eh I'm running a two year old 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo overclocked at 3.0 and it runs perfectly for me :] |

You either need to close some of the applications residing in RAM, or you need to purchase more RAM. It doesn't take much processing power to load a program. However, if you don't have enough RAM your computer will slow down while allocating some of the programs residing in RAM to your Virtual Memory (Hard Drive).

Very first upgrade to any computer, is memory. If it's video game related, then video card. If not the next would be the processor. And worse comes to worse, you'd replace the whole motherboard, get new ram, video card, and a processor

Throw in a case, PSU, and some fans and all you have left is your old information. |

Which is definitely in everyone's budget. It's not like we're in an economic crisis or anything.

Which is definitely in everyone's budget. It's not like we're in an economic crisis or anything. Bro... this is the best time to spend money! Think about it. If the dollar crashes... what good is all the money you've saved? Hell you could have 1 billion dollars in the bank, as soon as the dollar crashes... it's nothing more than useless paper. Well not useless, it'll be cheaper to use that as toilet paper than buying toilet paper ![]() So to be quite honest, you're better off spending almost every penny you got for the sake of boosting this economy. We need to stimulate the economy with spending ![]() I already bought parts for a new PC which will feature the x58 chipset motherboard with Intel's Nehalem processor. Also purchasing a new assault rifle and thinking of buying an Audi A3 ![]() If the economy was great, I couldn't even afford the crap I've planned to purchase lol... |

I think it a pretty good theory. As long as your income hasnt changed because of the crisis then its a great time to spend.

Seriously... that's overkill. Ya the motherboard + processor a lone is no less than $700ish I got the same exact processor but with a x58 Asus motherboard, it came out to $778.50 from Newegg. The one thing I frown upon on that setup is the fact they bought the GTX295 when that's hella more expensive than the 4850X2 which is less than $300 right now on CompUSA's website. Which happens to be just a tiny bit better than the GTX295 (I'm a Nvidia fan, but I know right now that the 4800s are out performing the GTXs) |

Why are MOBO's a big deal? Do they affect performance? All they really are, are things that hold the ram and processor?

Why are MOBO's a big deal? Do they affect performance? All they really are, are things that hold the ram and processor? Motherboard is like the heart. It is a very important part of the computer system. And yes, in fact motherboards are known to be the limitations of things such as processors and ram. When building a computer, the #1 thing that becomes priority is the motherboard. Everything you purchase such as the processor, ram, hdd, etc... has to be compatible with the motherboard. |

But as long as they are compatible you have no problem! I am planning on making a computer with parts all from new egg. I might use a case I already have to save money even though I love a new one! But as long as everything is compatible it doesnt effect performance!?
O and one thing im unsure of is what do you buy to have like usb plugs? Do they come with a case? Or with a power supply? Or in the mobo? Cause if they are connected to the mobo id have to make sure the case is compatible. |

Yes of course it effects performances.. because the motherboard you might currently have will not be capable of letting certain hardware take full advantage.
USB ports come in a few ways. Onboard, on the case it self (which will have cables that need to plug into the motherboard), and PCI (which also plugs into the motherboard). |

O! In that case I would get a new case. I want one with the plugs on top. And maybe one that lights up. haha.
So the checklist to make a computer is: * Memory/Ram. * Hard Drive. * Video Card. * Processor. * Monitor. * Case. * Motherboard. * Power Supply. * Optical Drive. Missing anything? Besides mouse and keyboard. |

Assuming that the motherboard is coming with a sound card (majority of the time they do) then yep... that'll be it

Mine was close to $3000, not including the monitors, keyboard, mouse, Wacom tablet, 5.1 surround system, headphones, mic, LED lights in the case, or Vista Ultimate. And can't forget all the expensive software.
I'm going to add matching LED lights to my keyboard. |
