this thread probably exists, but i don't know where it is and i want more hip hop threads so i'm just going to make another.

lets talk about overrated rappers. obviously, i'm going to have to say lil wayne is the most overrated rapper right now, but i don't really wanna talk about him that much. becuase he's only overrated among people who don't actually listen to hip hop very much imo, so their rating is irrelevant. he's not even relevant to those of us with any sense. let's stretch this out to be not just about right now in music but in general.

in light of the new movie coming out, the notorious debate has been brought back to life between me and some friends. i feel that biggie is overrated. his flow was nice as f*ck, but lyrically? i don't think he can stand with the people he's held up next to.

my brother's argument: we never got enough material from him to know if he was overrated or not. he has this same argument for big L, who is also on my overrated list mellow.gif

anyway, give some overrated rappers.

To overrate someone is to give more credit than they actually deserve

I believe that Lil' Wayne deserves the recognition that he has currently. The man clearly knows how to freestyle well if you listen to A Milli and his redux along with his albums that he has out

B.I.G. must've done something right to have people make a movie about him after his death. Would you say that Tupac is overrated? The man is still making songs from beyond the grave. I'm like are you kidding me?

So really, all we're left here is Kanye West and Soulja Boy. Kanye West has made a few nice hits but when you say some cocky shit like 'going down as the voice of this generation' then you will unlock the douchebag achievement. And Soulja Boy... is an idiot

@ will

i'm going to skip the lil wayne part because i just don't have the energy to get into it. i don't wanna call people ignorant stuff, but i just really really don't believe a knowledgeable hip hop head would think lil wayne deserves what he has right now. maybe there's hip hop heads somewhere who know their shit and still think he's good, but i've just never come across one. there's so much talent out there, that it's just really depressing to me the amount of attention someone like wayne gets.

biggie:
i don't think having a movie made after your death means that you weren't overrated. i'm not sure what that even has to do with anything? do you know anything about his music or have you ever listened to it? i'm hoping if people are going to dispute a claim in this thread they will at least reference the music in question. we're all aware he must have done something right, if he didn't, we wouldn't even be talkin about him. people can do things right and even make good music and still be overrated.

tupac is overrated depending on the claim. he isn't the second coming of christ or something like some people act like. i wouldn't call him the best rapper ever ever in the history of rap. i don't even think i could give ANYONE that title. i do think tupac was amazing though and put out some amazing work. all eyez on me & me against the world...good shit. i don't know how you can get on him for having work released after his death. i mean it's not like he's releasing that lol. although, i'm glad so much stuff has been released, just wish they would slow down with it. i duno, tupac is a legend, and i feel it's warranted for the most part. granted i have a bias towards him because he's personally one of my favorites. i'm up for people to debate that tupac is overrated. i've listened to many many debates on that and i have to say both sides have their points.

as far as kanye and soulja boy. as i already said, i don't know why you're acting like those are the only people left. similarly to lil wayne though i don't care to get into that. we've fought these out in other threads already. i'm admittedly a kanye groupie. mentioning soulja boy in this thread is disrespectful lol, he's not even a rapper really if you ask me. if other people really wanna get into it over these two or wayne though feel free, i'm not going to discourage my thread getting replies.

@ carrie: i probably agree. i mean i like him alright on some songs, esp for a "southern" rapper. maybe it's just me i can't stand a huge amount of rappers from the south for some reason. i will never accept him as the "king of the south" that's for sure though.

@ arjuna: SERIOUSLY. why is he always talkin about shit like he's going to retire from hip hop? did he even ever make a real hip hop album? not to my knowledge. i hate this kinda shit. put out a classic and then you can threaten to retire, until then i don't get why anyone would miss him that much.

i think 50 is overrated...sorta. he sorta can't be overrated to me though. even when he was on top of his game it seemed to me like mostly hype by the mainstream. the thing is that i don't know anyone who ever said 50 was a legend or something like that. so it's not like people are saying he's amazing and he isn't, i don't think he was ever in the running to be one of the greats. i think he got too much hype when he made it big with his club music.

i don't care that much for him in general. admittedly i have hate it or love it, 21 questions, and hustler's ambition in my itunes still haha. i like them.

50's laughin all the way to the bank though laugh.gif

edit:

i'm listening to him...ya know i think he coulda been good if he was more talented lyrically. i don't think he's a very intelligent guy really. i sorta like his delivery sometimes though. i'm listening to hustler's ambition.

i would rather listen to 50 and the game than wayne

it's to the point where i'm at a loss for words when people talk about how amazing he is. just...why, this kid was a joke just a few years ago. i remember laughing at him and how funny it was that he didn't even write his own albums.

50 sounded really monotone to me... not only in the vocal sense, but his music always seemed to be about money and his name was 50cent to start out with

I really like Hate It or Love It though.

yeah, basically. it's always the same shit over and over. i think he has potential for me to like him somewhere deep down in there, but i don't thin it'll ever come out because i don't think he's capable of writing the type of songs i wanna hear.

i loved hate it or love it when it came out. at that point, i thought the game was gonna go somewhere with his music.

I heard somewhere that Banks wrote for 50's songs. Yeah, he always raps about the same shit over and over. Money and bitches. That's what most rappers today sing about. To me, Ja Rule is a great lyricist, and his songs are about other shit besides ho's and money. But his delivery and stature isn't there for him for people to see him as relevant.

I don't understand how Lil Wayne got so popular out of a sudden. I remember a time when even Lil Bow Wow and Lil Romeo was more talked about than he was.
