First off, I'd prefer this to stay here and not moved to News because the real reason I'm posting this is to get a feel for what next gen console would be the best choice for me (um, and Iz, of course).

QUOTE
Hope Fades for PS3 as a Comeback Player
In Battle of the Game Consoles, Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox Widen Leads Over Sony's PlayStation
By DAISUKE WAKABAYASHI

TOKYO -- For most of this year, Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 videogame console seemed finally to be taking off after a slow start. The PS3, trailing Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 consoles, was closing in on the No. 2 Xbox 360, with new games and quarterly sales growth at twice the speed of last year.

But early results from this holiday season aren't promising. U.S. sales of the PS3 fell 19% last month from a year earlier, while sales doubled for the Wii console and rose 8% for the Xbox 360, according to research firm NPD. Analysts say they expect PS3 sales for this month to be flat or lower than last year, while sales for its rivals are likely to rise. And Sony may not reach its goal of selling 10 million PS3 consoles in the fiscal year through March, analysts say.

...

more here

Last year (2008, so almost last year) was a very financially straining year, so I decided to wait until I receive my tax returns to get a new console. I had my mind on a Wii for a while, but after visiting a friend who has a 360, I'm sort of conflicted now. Then I had read a few comments on Amazon (I was browsing through some games) and a few reviewers were singing PS3 praises and I became even more conflicted.

I'm sure many of you have one (if not more than one) of these, so I was hoping that people might find a bit of time to give me their take. Also, does a potential financial fallout have much of an impact? I mean, I'd hate to spend so much money on something that will possibly be obsolete in the near future. Maybe "obsolete" isn't the best word to use, but I'm not sure how else to phrase it.

I swear, I'm not always so cautious when it comes to game related purchases. I bought the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox without much thought. It's just that the new equipment seems like more of an investment as a whole.

If you could be specific as to why/if you have a preference, that would be great. :)

I think the wii's the best. It gets you physical, especially if you have the wii fit. It's really fun, too. I usually don't get bored of the same games either. Also, since it's for you and your son, I'd probably go with the wii too. I think the wii is more family friendly, if that makes sense.

Also, I have a PS3 and it just broke last week. No reason. It stopped reading disks.
It was only about a year old.

The 360 has a great selection of games, and I'm pretty sure it's the cheapest at this point. Online costs money, and red rings are a bitch

The PS3 doesn't have a great selection of games, but online is free, and in my opinion, it has the best graphics. Plus it can play 3 systems worth of games (PS1, PS2, PS3), instead of the two that the others play(Xbox and 360 or Gamecube and Wii).

The Wii is pretty cheap, and it has great gameplay, and a pretty good selection of games. It's graphics aren't great, and it's difficult to get used to the motion controls.

OKay I have the 360, and My Newest Console The PS3, but Out of Both I would Say The 360 Is THE WINNER!...

It has over 980 GAMES! and The Best Multiplayer Action and The Best Servers for Online Play, Me Personally, I have to Play 24/7!

The 360 Has The Best Graphics Period.

Yea PS3 Has Bluray Big WHOOP, But Not Best Gameplay or Network...

Come ON, 400 For A Console! That's Bull&%@$!
Xbox Has Best Quality 199 for the Arcade, Good Price For A Console!

Wii is a family console

xbox is for playing with friends online

PS3 is if you're a sucker for killer graphics

i.e.

Wii if you have friends IRL
Xbox if you have internet friends
PS3 if you got no friends or if you're just hecka baller rich

aight for real, Wii brings people together, no doubt, but it's probably as fun as the people you're playing with

xbox, you could say the games themselves are more fun

I don't have a PS3

Smells like fanboyism up in here

360 sucks
PS3 sucks
Wii sucks

The winner = PC.

The end

You can close this now

On a serious note: I've played all three, the Wii at home collects dust because after a week you realize that you're waving a remote at a screen like an idiot. I sold the 360 because I don't feel like paying a $50 yearly premium to play with friends, so I eventually bought a PS3 and the entire thing is a product of hype. Everything that the PS3 claims to be able to do is major fail.

In retrospect, all gaming consoles aren't that great, but if you had to get one of the three, the 360 takes the cake but not because of the reasons that other users claim, but that the 360 sucks the least out of all three consoles

I have a Wii, and it sucks. After one week of flicking my arms, that shit got played out real quick. Only games I f*cks with is Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart, but I use the gamecube controller. I'm through playing Wii for the most part. The graphics are no good.

I'm going to get a PS3 when the price is below $300 because I know its the best system. The PS3 doesn't have games is a huge myth and misconception also. The one thing that sways me in the direction of the PS3, since it and the 360 have almost identical third party games, is the first party exclusives on the PS3 along with Metal Gear Solid 4.

I also f*cks with the 360 when I'm at work. Only prob is it has almost the same identical games as the PS3(you could say the same about the PS3). The only thing that has swayed me away from buying a 360 is unreliable hardware. The failure rate is much higher than that of its next gen rivals.

edit//
If its for your son though, I would def go with the Wii. Although I got bored with it, I'm pretty sure since he since he's young he will enjoy it. I notice whenever friends and family come over they have the time of their lives. If you're looking to be family oriented the Wii has those games you're looking for.

If you're they type that likes blockbuster type games. The 360 of PS3 would be a better choice. These usually fall under the ratings of rated T to Mature though.

If I had money to buy any console on the market now, I'd buy an Xbox 360. Here's why:

The Wii is fun, but I see it as more of a party-type console. If you have a bunch of friends that come over a lot on Friday nights, you'll probably have fun playing it. But as far as I can tell, it seems like it's a bit lacking as far as single-player fun goes -- i.e., flailing your arms around madly is only fun when there're other people flailing their arms around madly, too. Plus, the game selection is a bit...blah. I've experienced this with my Nintendo DS, too. When it comes to the DS and the Wii, there seem to be a few categories of games: (1) kiddie games that are usually not that much fun for adults (with the exception of, e.g., Mario and related games); (b) arcade-style games like Geometry Wars that are fun, but not necessary $20-30 fun; © ports of console or PC games that aren't quite as good as their brethren, like Assassin's Creed; (d) really, really fun games. Unfortunately, the number of games that fall into D is small.

The PS3...well, it's pricey. Too pricey, in my book. And the game selection isn't that much better than for the Xbox 360, so there's not a compelling reason to buy it.

The Xbox 360, though, is a good balance: it's got a lot of fun games, and a good selection of games, and it's fun to play by yourself or with friends. Plus, Xbox Live rocks. The console itself is a bit pricey, and the peripherals are kind of pricey, too, but if you have the money to burn, I think the 360 is the best buy.

this is the only thing BAD about 360..
The one FLAW in the 360 database is the RING OF DEATH!!

god Microsoft knew that this would happen, but they choose NOT to fix it, so they just decide to EXTEND everyones Warranty to 3 years...damn they are lazy...

I don't like the PS3, but its good if you love amazing graphics. Wii is good if you live at home with your parents and little brothers or sisters. 360 is what I prefer, for playing with friends. I don't really mind paying the $50 for the year, because if you pay by 3 months, you waste $30 bucks and like Juna said, it costs less than a regular game. My computer blows for playing games (other than sims lol) so thats not even an option.

"sony won't likely catch miscrosoft in the u.s. until at least 2014"

that's cause westerners have a different idea of good gameplay. i personally prefer the games for ps3/any other sony console over the 360. right now though, the wii is kicking both their asses.

Hahaha, yeah for the most part I'm joking. The graphics are pretty much similar, in some cases 360 better, Ps3 better when dealing with multiplatform games. But from what I'm seeing, there isn't nothing messing with Killzone 2's graphics right now. As for the exclusives, I like both system's lineups, I can't hate there. I also think MS is doing a good job establishing themselves as a top tier console by gaining exclusives Sony once had( [Star Ocean 4, Final Fantasy, etc. ). The biggest one was GTA. Had it not been for that, I think console sales would be pretty close right about now.

When my friend had his 360 hooked up in our office, it was nice. Made me hate my Wii. ermm.gif. I plan on getting a PS3 though. Since its expensive, It show that I'm living a baller lifestyle.

But see the problem I have with KZ2 is it looks like your playing a game in greyscale. About the only color is explosions, enemies eyes, and sights. Everything else looks like they put a grey filter over it with the opacity at 80%. Of COURSE it looks good. When all your textures are as toned down in color as that, I'd hope so. Now it is pleasant to look at, mainly with the great particle effects and smooth edges, but when the color pallet is that limited it just loses realism. And, yes, there is something messing with Killzone 2. It's been out for a couple years now. It's called Crysis. Ever seen it? It's superior to anything on either console. Honestly, I'm excited about Killzone 2. It's the first game for the PS3 that has been a slap in the face to Microsoft. The ball is in Microsoft's court now, and seeing as how they've been dominating this industry since day 1, I can't wait to see what they toss back.

Yeah, Microsoft is brilliant when in comes to business. They predicted that the gaming industry would still flourish even in this economy and invested early on. Now the 360 has skyrocketed and Microsoft is making a ton in profit. There's no way the PS3 will catch up. At least not anytime soon. This whole one decent game a year thing has got to go. If Sony doesn't get their act together this year, it's over. It's make it or break it time.

As a Metal Gear Solid fanatic since the first on PSX, I have to say MGS4 was decent. Mainly because I paid $60 to play a game, not watch a movie made in CGI. Seriously, that game is 10 minutes of gameplay, a 35-45 minute cut scene, rince and repeat. It really got old after about half way through.

I dunno I'm just loving my 360. The online is incredible, especially with the new dashboard and features. Achievements are absolutely BRILLIANT. They're so fun to try and challenge yourself to get and they increase the replay and value of a game 10 times over. PS3 has trophies which, I'm sorry to hate, are lame. Not at all the same thing. Trophies are like the little rewards you get for beating a game last gen like a gold medal. Who the hell wants a gold medal for beating Little Big Planet in THE FASTEST TIME EVERZ! Lame. That's like winning in the special Olympics, and we all know how that joke ends. They are pointless. Literally and figuratively. You don't get points like you do for achievements. The games are more my taste and any great game you can get on PS3 like GTA IV and COD 4 you can get on the 360, with better online and features. Xbox usually has a ton of DLC that's exclusive to the 360 like the GTA IV expansion packs coming out. I'm not real interested in games like Little Big Planet. it's fun, for a few minutes with friends, but I can't sit down and take that game seriously on my own lol. I'd feel like a tool getting the trophies in that game. Just not my type. The only game I'm remotely interested in is Killzone 2, and not even for its prettiness. I liked the first one on PS2. Techies across the internets agree that the 360 is actually a more powerful system with a slight advantage in graphic capabilities, mostly in speed/framerate and draw distance. It's just that all that Sony BS is still in the air and people are still believing it. The only advantage PS3 has is the bluray disk, but that's really not that big of an advantage. All they're using it for is to fill up disk space with CGI that is entirely too long and drawn out. Xbox is shying away from using 2 disks or else they'd have no problem with running Killzone 2 or MGS4 on the 360. I have no idea why 'cause when I was a kid, having a 2 disk game made me feel like I was getting more for my money and it usually meant that was a bad ass game. RE4 anyone? Yup, 2 disks. The perfected Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes? You guessed it. 2 disks.

Sorry for the long post. I love talking about this stuff. After all, I work in the industry. I know virtually no one on cB is interested in all this but I like chatting about it. I've yet to find a good gaming forum or else I'd go there. Unfortunately, every last one is polluted with idiots. stubborn.gif

Unfortunately, every last one is polluted with idiots. stubborn.gif

lol this basically says, "Im a xbox360 fanboy"

crysis requires a really good rig to run it, which most people dont have, if you dont like the cutscenes, skip it, dominating the industry? they are no where remotely close to nintendo, all that advertisement is useless if your xbox doesn't work

Not at all. I'm simply stating why 360 is the better console and why it is my favorite. Seeing as I have both a PS3 and 360, I'm hardly a fanboy.

I'm aware that Crysis requires a good rig. What I said still remains true, so I'm not understanding your point.

You can't skip the cutscenes in MGS4 on your first play through. Even so, skipping them would be stupid. You wouldn't have motivation to play the game.

See, I don't understand the whole problem with the nonworking Xbox. It was only an issue with the first generation and Microsoft provided a free 3 year warranty if the RRoD ever happened. Send your box in, it'll be back in a week or less, you get a free month of Xbox live and a brand new Xbox. Seems like more than enough to me. I've had my 360 since launch and never had a problem. I think half the reason they mess up is because people don't know how to take care of hardware. I'm not denying the issue, I'm simply saying it's blown out of proportion.

And I completely agree with your point about Nintendo. Seeing as the Wii isn't a next generation console, I didn't mention it.

if your comparing crysis to KZ2, you can only expect a postive connection, therefore boosting Sony yet you argue for MS.
there are people on their 6 and 7th XBox, doesn't exactly build credibility
so? play through the game first time for the movie, then 2nd for gameplay, double your replay value

JC said there's nothing competing with Killzone 2 in the graphics department. I said, yes, there is, it's called Crysis. I don't understand how that's a comparison. I'm not comparing anything. I'm simply stating there's a game out there with better graphics so that he might check it out.

And there are people who are still on their first. What's your point?

That last sentence is irrelevant. For the record, thanks for keeping me entertained. It's rare to find someone with interest enough in gaming to have a discussion.

Well your point was that MIcrosoft was the clear cut winner against Sony. However, I refuse to believe a company with a rig that doesn't work is better than a solid one with blu-ray

As if Sony's hardware is significantly better. Remember the widespread problem with the PS2's optical drive, which caused it to slowly fail over time? Hell, my roommate's PS2 experiences disc read errors over 50% of the time when trying to load a game.

This is true. In all honesty, everyone I know who owns a PS2 has either had a disk drive issue or had to buy a whole new system. In some cases, multiple times. I had to buy a second one. At least Microsoft is giving you a brand new Xbox 360 in return for free. That's why I've never understood PS3TARDS case about the Xbox failure rate. PS2 was Sony's second console. Xbox 360 is Microsoft's 2nd console. It's a learning process. One that I'm confident will be corrected next gen.

There was an article I read a year back that talked about Sony always bragging about how big sales are for the PS2, but they never mention the failure rate and what a large percentage of those sales are people having to rebuy a PS2 after their first, even second PS2 crapped out. I've no idea where that article is now, but I will most certainly look for it.

Oh, and that PS3TARD crack isn't referring to anyone here. I just like using it to rag on fanboys. I don't like any kind of fanboy. 98% of them are ignorant beyond comprehension.

NOPE, I don't remember because as I recall it didn't effect nearly as much as people RROD(jk, I do remember but you get my point). However, I will say that the PS3 has its own problem, the YLOD. But, that also happens rarely.

Thats ironic, cause I never knew anyone that had to get their PS2 replaced. I guess its just perspective. Yeah so what, if they are on their 2nd console, still 2009, they've been in business long enough to know a lot of eyes are on them. Microsoft also knew they had a problem, but they didn't fix it or rather refuse to double check. I can't pull up the article though.

I'm not defending Sony either. They are full of shit. Constant promises never fulfilled, and all the exclusives lost. When FFXIII was announced for the 360, I was seriously thinking that I should've bought an Xbox.

Guess so. Yeah, I know. After all the heat Microsoft has been taking, I'm sure they've realized where they went wrong. In all honesty, I think they were trying to keep the price down, so they probably didn't use the best hardware out there. It worked. People who couldn't afford a PS3 went with the 360 and got hooked.

Well good I'm glad you realize that 'cause that's my biggest beef with Sony. I honestly think the PS3 is not a bad system itself. It's just in the wrong hands. I don't respect Sony as a company. I loved my PS2 and I hated the first Xbox. Sony promised this console that people dream about, called it the PS3 and I was sold. I'm just glad I didn't buy it at launch 'cause I was seriously let down after all that bullshit. So, I went with the 360 'cause everyone was raving about it and I love the thing. Best console I have ever owned.

You don't even have a 360? If you can afford it, I think you should pick one up. The hardware issues are over with. Like I said, that was just the first batch of consoles made. They even started using better disk drives in the newer ones. It's best to have both. I assure you, you won't regret it. Most developers always say they go with the 360 because it's easier to design for, and you get the same results. Hence the reason the 360 has been the choice for exclusives. Not to mention Microsoft loaning money to keep it that way, but still. Not to mention the user base is double that of the PS3. That's why a lot of PS3 exclusives go multiplatform. It's all about $$$ son.

Well If I were to get an Xbox, it'll have to be the pro bundle cause the arcade one sucks ass. Then a one year fee of Xbox live would total 349.99 which is about 50 dollars off from a low end PS3, which I can not afford right now

You know, I'll be honest, I loved my Gamecube. Had some great exclusives. Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bro. Melee, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Metriod Prime, Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Paper Mario, Super Monkey Ball, just to name a few. Man. Great system. It was actually more powerful than the PS2 and Xbox. I don't know why it wasn't really taken advantage of, except in RE4. Also games like Soul Caliber 2 and NBA Street Vol. 2 were better on the GCN.

Anyone who didn't think the Gamecube was a great console either didn't have one, or just doesn't know what they're talking about.

Yea gamecube was a good console to get.
it was fun to use and the fact that anyone could play it kinda helped mainly cause u'd get that family air on things thats the thing i like bout Wii also it encompasses everyone so in ma fam it kinda brings evryone togeter since everyone and they baby cousin and grandma can play.

now between ps3 and xbox360
i'd choose the ps3
mainly cause one it's an entire entertainment system in itself.
i can go online
play movies/blu-ray DVD, store large amounts of info and other things like music and what not, remote play off my psp, connect to other computers in my networks, stream videos and stuff online and it works pretty quick. Also i can play my PS2 games off it and get my ps1 games DL to it as well.

Xbox 360 i don't wanna pay for xbox live mainly cause that's alot of cash.
The way i see it is once you get a PS3 the cost is high but afterwards you're good
as long as you take care of your console it should last you

my PS2 i only bought one and it's lasted me 7 years.
Everyone Iknow has only had one PS2 where as the xbox always had complaints on breakin down.

it all comes down to how well you take care of your system.
Also the disc reading error that only really occured when the CD was Damaged but other wise it's fine

So with me for family fun an dentertainment i go with the Wii
where as for entertainment and personal interest I go with Sony's PS3/PSP

Xbox live isn't that expensive. And the PSP was the worst piece of shit Sony ever released.

I had drive issues with my first PS2 after one year of owning it. My second PS2 broke after 7 years, and I'm on my third one right now.

I actually play my PS2 more than my PS3, but I definitely prefer the PS3 over the 360. I'm a graphics nut.

Wow. Ok, I thought that too for the first couple months I had it. But I quickly realized PSP sucks balls. UMD failed, online play failed, control failed, everything about that stupid thing failed. And there's a total of maybe 5 good games and it's how old now? Like father, like son, I guess. Mine has been collecting dust for literally over a year. I'm not even sure where the damn thing is, or else I'd try and scam some little kid out of $250.

UMD is a little slow, i guess, which the slim tried to correct. it's not something that bothers me; i have both slim and old, and i even prefer the original. yes, i would like more infrastructure play, but i'm actually satisfied with the adhoc.

as for games, i love all of mine. '09 has a kickass lineup, but i'm mostly waiting for: phantasy star portable, ff dissidia (us version), ff agito, monster hunter freedom unite (YAYAYAYA!!), prinny, samurai showdown anthology, galactrix, resistance retribution (eh maybe).

Listen, I'm happy you own something you enjoy, but if you enjoy the PSP that much, I can't imagine how you'd feel about, you know, a gaming platform that's worth a shit. You should definitely try something else. Seeing how you're so invested in a handheld of all things, I'm guessing that's the only kind of gaming platform you own. Or, at least, the newest kind you own.

You f*ckin' idiot lol. I didn't suggest either or. I'm simply saying the kid obviously likes video games and he should take it to the next level. Then maybe he'll see why we all think the PSP is a piece. Hell, I'd rather have a DS than a PSP. I'm just waiting for a DSi.

lol i do have a DS, and i still prefer the PSP, assuming we're talking only about legit aspects of both handhelds. the DS does have superior online play, but that's just because more companies cater to it. i do see a good future for the PSP though, especially in the PS3-PSP connectivity realm.

like kevin said, it's just preference really. what are you comparing the PSP to anyway? the only other handheld in the competition is the DS, and there are such vast differences between the two that they practically cater to different demographics (moreso in america than in japan). if there was another handheld in the market, i'd understand your reasoning more, but if you're just comparing those two i could just as well say the DS is a piece of shit ;|

in the case of PSP vs PS3 & 360, i do appreciate my PSP more. i spend more time on it and would even rather have it than my ps3, more than just for mobility/convenience reasons. where is this "next level" you speak of 'cause i think i've seen all that is available within our technological reach ;o

assuming everyone here has played (and still plays consistently) with all the consoles in the current market, every single answer posted here would just be preference. i think i'm one of the few who considers the great and bad aspects of all the consoles and STILL prefer the PSP over all. of course, the war between fanboys has been goin' on forever and will continue to go on, but i will defend my beloved PSP even after sony stops supporting it lol. even without the consideration that it's recently been in a slump, i think it's made a huge enough market dent (in both console and game sales) that it deserves to be considered a serious console.

I use emulators.

But Personally I love my PS3, I use it more than my 360. Although will PS3 make a comeback? I doubt it. They have already made plenty of decisions for the PS4 and it will be coming out in a couple of years. Although this year I've seen more PS3 being sold before the 360 just because so many people don't want to deal with the hassle of having to send their xbox to microsoft every time it breaks to get it fixed or a new one.

I have a DS and a PSP, and honestly I would say some things on the PSP just look amazing and so bright and pretty. The DS is getting better with their graphics though, the game Moon that just came out has pretty good graphics from what I heard and PSU is coming out in October and they have some of the best graphics that you have seen on a DS.

People like Nintendo though, its a kids company.

Nope, sorry. So far this year the PSP is out selling the PS3. Even though both are wayyy behind. Wii and DS are kicking everything's ass though. XD.gif There's an article there that says 360 is still outselling PS3 4 to 1. But, I mean, the Wii is being bought like crazy.

Oh, and these charts are only updated with official console sales information from their respected companies.

http://www.vgchartz.com/

And I dunno how many times I've said this, but the 360 hardware issue is over with. They've fixed it. Most every 360 made now is fine. I think a 3 year warranty and a free month of Xbox Live are more than enough compensation if they do mess up.

That's fine... but how many of those xbox consoles had to be re-purchased because a lot of times microsoft denied fixing it? And how many times have majority of XBOX360s have been sent to Microsoft to be repaired? I can compare a chair from the dollar store to a chair from say Office Depot. The dollar store is gonna sell more of their 1 dollar quality chair compared to the better quality and a lot more expensive chair from Office Depot.

See this is why people need to read the whole thread, or at least the last few pages before they make themselves look stupid. We already discussed how hypocritical it is to say this. Sony's PlayStation 2 had a high failure rate. Especially with the disk drive, or it would just decide to take a shit and never work again. It's a learning process. PS2 was Sony's 2nd console, just like the 360 is Microsoft's. The only difference is that Sony didn't do anything about it. Microsoft has provided a 3 year FREE warranty, and if your console breaks any time during those 3 years, your console will be repaired and sent back along with a free month of Xbox Live. And I have no idea where you got the idea that Microsoft denies repairing a console. I have never heard of that. The only way they deny repairs is if you open the Xbox and mess with its insides, which is perfectly legit. Every electronics company uses that as a rule. And Microsoft fixing the problem 3,4,5 years later? The problem was fixed a year and a half after the first batch of 360's were released. Up until recently, that first batch was still in cycle. I hardly ever hear of any issues with newer 360's.

Man, you really, really need to research before you speak. loool.gif
