i have a new theory.
families fight and fall apart during the holidays because that's when they actually have to spend time together. long story short, i got into a fight with my bitch of a mother and got thrown out. fun stuff. |

That's an interesting theory. I think it's quite valid. The holidays usually aren't so bad in Hong Kong because I can go out whenever and sort of escape the mundane atmosphere of home. Sadly in Canada, I'm pretty much stuck at home and have spent the past week isolated here with my family, and there's bound to be more arguments.
I think more accidents happen in the Christmas season because 1) stress and 2) the same reason why people get sick in the winter, because they're forced to stay inside, cooped up with people on a cold night. Christmas f*cking sucks. I'm not having a good time at all. |

Yeah, everytime my sister is down during holiday times, we constantly fight. She made me cry yesturday and we were arguing.. I do believe your theory. I think it's because were more use to being independent than being together with family and how we usually are without them. Even if you do live with your family but your not as close with them as in the holiday times it does ruin your holiday spirit.

lol i don't know, speaking from a ronery person. we never do anything for christmas, no presents, no big dinner, no family time. we used to put up a short fake plastic tree, but we've stopped doing that along time ago. i kind of wish we'd have family bonding, even if it did mean a bunch of arguments. who knows, you might miss it (spoken from ronery person)

Yeah, the holidays definitely make people fight. What makes it worse is everyone pretends to be all happy at first, and then blow up like hell after.

i love the holidays just because i get to be around my family non stop. i count down for breaks when they come. i can't wait to move back to new york just so i can be around them nearly everyday. it's the best part of my life really, i can't even think of one thing i like more. i never really fight with my family other than just arguing for the sake of arguing, not anything that matters over ten minutes later.

As cynical as I can sometimes be, I really avoid thinking about how shitty the holidays can be in regards to family.

I don't spend time with the family that I don't get along with. Christmas is wayyyy more than gifts and dinner. I'd rather be in a room with the people that I love and care for rather than going around to see family that I don't have a good time with.
I think that people are so worried about making sure that they send a card to everyone on their list or stop by everyone's house that they forget to have a good time and enjoy themselves. They let the stress get to them. Regardless of religion or occupation, the holidays are always stressful, which is why it's important to be around people who you have fun with. All in all I think it's the stress talking. I have family members who will call me and complain to me around the holidays, but no other time. This year Christmas was great. Last year my brother brought his bitchy ex-girlfriend, but this year a few family members came over and some of our friends. We ate dinner and joked around, opened some gifts, and played cards (whilst drinking... just a little) for a long time. |
