Let's start with J Dilla's "Donuts."
Then, after that, make sure you cop "The Shining," which is more of a collection of his produced songs as opposed to it's own LP. Once you have those two cuts, get your hands on Q-Tip's "Amplified" because the entire album is produced by the late Mr. Yancey. If you're feeling jazzy, I suggest the collaborative with West Coast producer (and concept rapper) Madlib, entitled 'Jaylib.' |

Detroit hiphop, currently, is a scene flourishing with talent. The emcees aren't just talented, but the producers are as well. So most LPs from the underground Mo'City scene are consistent from the first to the last track. J Dilla influenced the sound heavily seeing as he was the 'go to guy' behind the scenes for years.
It's fair to say that Detroit hiphop of today is equivalent to NY hiphop of the mid to late 90s (see: Rawkus Records). If you like Dilla then you should try to get your hands on some Madlib, too, if you get the chance. Dude just dropped a new album this year. Madlib The Beat Konducta - WLIB AM: King of the Wigflip. |
