QUOTE
Getting a seat on a New York City subway is not always easy during rush hour. But it will soon be impossible on some cars.

You're probably used to standing on a subway car anyway, but what if your subway car had no seats at all? You could find out soon. Hey... it's not like it's ever really easy to get a seat on the subway anyway.

[...]

But what about subway cars with no seats at all?

Behold what could be coming to your commuting future. [...]

"Seat-less" subway cars are coming. The seats will be locked in the upright position during rush hour to squeeze in 18 percent more passengers. [...]

[B]y late next spring the MTA will be rolling out a train where four of the 10 cars will have flipped up seats during rush hour as part of a pilot program to ease the overcrowding.

The NYC transit system is probably one of the best in the world but this dumb ass idea is going to decrease its quality.

Meh, I don't think it's that bad. It's only during rush hour and it's not all the cars, right? I never sit down when I'm on the subway anyways, unless it's like... after midnight.

They must have gotten this brilliance from us and the CTA so this is what will happen in New york:

1.People will say wtf and why?
NYC transit will be all like BUT ITS SUCH A GOOD IDEAAAAA but what do we know we never ride on the subway.
2.This idea will backfire causing the number of people to use the subway go to go wayyyy wayyy down.
3.Then the NYCTA will be like LOL WUT and see how they can make money for the loss. You see what these idiots dont realize is it takes more money to remove shit then to just leave it the f*ck alone and be happy and grateful. But NOOOOO instead they will just up the fares by 5-10 percent to the people who still are using the subway and the buses and whatever to make up for the losses that the no chair stunt.
4.HALF ASSED PROFIT!!!11!!1!!!!1

Oh, you hadn't heard about this yet? I read about it in the newspaper before summer vacation, or somewhere around then. I think there are subways in China or Japan that are like this. Meh, as long as I'm not extremely tired from school, I'm okay with standing; but it's a half-hour ride from Times Square to where I live, so... :\

Well, if it was during rushhour when people weren't making long commutes, then I guess I could see some reasoning behind it. I think it's just a big pain in the butt.

It's a subway train on a designated track, not a bus on the road. Chances of crashing are pretty low. And even then you don't need to wear a seatbelt on the bus, because of momentum. If they deemed it safe enough for a full train of people to ride with the seats in, then it would be fine without them.

They'd probably choose a car with seats. It's not entire subway trains that will have the seats removed.

i disagree. i ride the subway a lot and during rush hour, it's pretty much body-to-body-squished and ppl pressed up against people, etc. with the exception of people with children and elderly or disabled folks, it wont really make much of a difference. and since they're not completely removing the seats, just making it foldable,... i really don't think it's such a big deal, especially since it's only in a few of the cars, not all of them.

That would only work if the cars are marked as such on the outside.

I nap on the subway all the time. It's gonna get harder if I have to stand up. People will still use the MTA. They'll just be grumpy.

I feel like there's gonna be a lot more rude people because of this. Normally, people who sit down don't get shoved around too much. However, if those people had to stand, they would have to feel what it's like to be in a sardine can and then have the atrocity to yell at others for "touching" or "bumping" into them during rush hour.

I think it's a good idea. I don't think it's fair that some people get to sit down and relax while others have to worry about not falling over. :P

Agreed. There's a bit of a problem though. The few seats that are open will be hounded by everyone in the subway car. The elderly and disabled will not get them because they are weaker, and people on the subway are inherently evil (especially fat middle-aged women that steal the seats just as you make your way towards them).

The amount of people that ride the subway will not decrease at all because of the seat deal. People will be grumpy and frustrated, but the subway is the best way to get around, and that's really the end of the story.

Isn't one of the advantages of seating that it actually reduces overcrowdng, beause it limits the capacity or people to squeeze in? I think I read that somewhere, but ther's a chance I made it up...

Anyway, if the cars are literally just hollow tubes, there are going to be a LOT more peopl squshing in = tres uncomfortable. Ah well. I live thousands of miles away and in the country to boot, so let them fancy city-folk have their ways, I s'pose.
