I'm new here. Can you explain what a " beta " download is , why i should take it or not. I'm on Vista. Thanks for your help.

Beta means its a testing version of something.
Mostly the finished version would have "Beta" taken off. |

Take it if you want to try out the new thing, but the Beta versions of certain programs are likely to have certain bugs and whatnot. They'll be annoying but not detrimental. I prefer to wait.

Beta versions are like basically the "not finished version" of the original copy.
BEWARE! it has some Glitches and other bad stuff... |

In Games, they have Glitches, really sick ones.. and it gets me pissed off!
(friggin glitchers, in there friggin betas!  )
