this is my situation

3:45:05 PM Jc: ok i have a dilemma
3:45:14 PM Jc: i bought a package of pepperjack cheese this morning
3:45:28 PM Jc: i made a sandwich with it around 11-11:30
3:45:36 PM Jc: i threw the entire package of cheese in the trash accidentally
3:45:44 PM Jc: and left it there until just now hen i realized i did that when i was looking for it
3:45:51 PM Jc: there wasn't anything in the trash but that, cause id just changed the bag
3:45:54 PM Jc: what should i do?
3:45:57 PM Jc: its been sitting out for
3:45:59 PM Jc: like 4 hours
3:46:03 PM Jc: in a trash can, do u think i should eat it still

i'm eating it right now. i really wanted this sandwich, the cheese cost me like 5 bucks. do you think this was the wrong decision?

5 bucks is a lot of money. what if it's really not bad and then i threw it out completely. then i'd go buy more and end up spending 10 dollars instead of five.

it doesn't smell bad, but then again i can't really smell anything but the peppers in it anyway.

this is the initial advice i got

3:47:22 PM applesandmustard: think about cheese at parties and stuff
3:47:24 PM applesandmustard: cheese trays
3:47:27 PM Jc: i mean its pepper jack cheese, i dont know if that like preserves it
3:47:28 PM Jc: hmmmm
3:47:34 PM Jc: good point
3:47:35 PM applesandmustard: why would that preserve it
3:47:37 PM Jc: idk...
3:47:44 PM applesandmustard: youre making shit up
3:47:48 PM applesandmustard: you dont know anything
3:47:56 PM Jc: so i should eat it ?
3:47:57 PM Jc: u would?
3:48:08 PM applesandmustard: prob not

so yeah, what about cheese at parties? it sits out and people still eat it. either way i suppose its too late now since i've eaten it, we'll see if it goes over good or not.

the moral of this is that life is full of hard decisions.

It's not the "sitting out" part that's sorta ew. It's the fact that it's been in a garbage can. Even if you changed your bag, the bacteria that gets through and is in the trash is kinda ew.

I doubt anything bad will really happen, though. The HCl in your stomach is pretty much strong enough to conquer and defeat most of the bacteria you eat.

I mean, it's not like cheese can really get worse. It's already been molded and aged.

Yeah, that's the part that made me kinda go "ew". But if it was in the wrapper, it should be ok. Obviously, if it smelled funky and was really mushy when you touched it (or got dried out), you shouldn't eat it.

yeah it was in the zipped up package, inside a trash bag that was new, inside a trash can that's fairly new. so, that part didn't bother me so much, if the circumstances had been different i wouldn't have even gone through with the eating it out of the trash part laugh.gif

I think your problem began when you didn't buy provolone.

i don't knwo what you ended up doing, btu throw it away. anything that needs to be in a fridge that's been sitting outside for more than 2 hours has millions of bacteria collected.

i took a nutrition and food science class recently.

But when you go to a farmers market/green market, all that stuff's been sitting outside (you know, except for meat, poultry, fish, milk and yogurt). Fruit and veggies are outside before they're picked, process, and packaged and they're ready to eat.
