I think it's more of, "don't use God's name in vain" or something like that.

I know that using God's name in vain is wrong, but I don't know about other curse words. I guess it all depends on how you use them. I don't really know though.

hurmmm the Bible. again i dont think anyone can truly interpret the Bible. very metaphorically written. i dont think curse words were the same back then. i really think curse words was created by people as certain codes and was made before the Bible was ever written. so i dont know unless it is clearly stated in the Bible. its really very interesting how ALOT of people use God's name in "vain", its a habit these days. like omg. you know what i mean?

It's okay, because you're not taking god's name in vain.
I thought the 10 commandments were the rules.

Huh.

I'm surrounded by hypocrites then. I know a few older adults who use God's name in vain where I work... they're Christian to me, at least they claim to be.

Nobody should curse. But Christians especially because we are to keep our minds and mouths clean. Cursing something or someone is not glorifying to God and also it is wrong

um no1 should curse, saying God's name in vain is a sin, it is one of the Commandments not to say the Lord's Name in vain...and ppl will "know we are Christians by our love" and we are to hold ourself to higher standards b/c we are Christians...even if other ppl do it, it doesnt make it ok for us to do it....so yeah, its wrong...also if ur parents have told u not to curse it is sinful to curse...goign against their word is breaking a commandment..."Honor thy father and thy mother" its not honor if u dont do what they tell u _smile.gif

I don't know, actually.

You're right, the Bible does state to not use the Lord's name in vain.. however, I don't think it states anything about other cursing.

It's not appropriate for kids, I know that much.

I will admit.. I do curse, and I'm a Christian.

I don't think it's terribly right for anyone to curse.. yet, most of us do..

Yeah..

Cursing is not sinning unless 1. your using god's name in vain or 2. your disrespecting another person.

Cursing isn't keeping our body clean/pure. It's not a sin, but I'm sure God doesn't appreciate it.

9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt[a] water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
James 3:9-12

14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
Romans 12:14

7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
Exodus 20:7 (more of using his name in vain)

First of all, no offense but the speaker that your referring to is in the wrong. First of all, if he's a Christian why would he call people fools for cursing when God asks us to respect your neighbor...one of the 10 commandments and secondly...cursing doesn't make the Christian, the fact that you love God and have Faith in his works is what makes you a Christian. And it's not the rules either that make you a Christian or make you saved.

I don't feel guilty in any of that either unless of course I use God's name in vain such as God (cuss word here). Then I do feel guilt...but I do not feel guilt when I cuss in general =]

The Bible does say not to curse.
QUOTE
Do any of you think you are religious? If you do not control your tongue, your religion is worthless and you deceive yourselves. (Jam 1:26, TEV)

"Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you." (Luk 6:27, 28)

Let your speech always be gracious… (Col 4:6, NRSV)

But what is a curse, it seems as if the Bible defines a curse as angry, or purposely hurtful words... I don't think saying f**k once in a while is bad thing, or how about shit damn whore c**t pussy... I don't know... their all English words.

If they aren't meant in an offensive or angry manor I really don't think that it's a sin. If I said, "Oh man, dude I had the best f**king time today!!! It was amazing... THE SHIT!!"

I don't know, I see that as a pretty positive thing. I don't think that statement is offensive. I think that the last verse I posted (Col 4:6) is probably the catch. I definitely don't recommend people cuss so much that they lose sight of the 46,000+ words available in the English language. Don't cuss so much you sound like a ignorant little bedraggled c**t.

Cursing is more of a venial sin(two types of sins if people didn't know). Venial sins doesn't affect the relationship of God, but affect the relationship of others, which I learned in Bible School..

I know there are two type of sins but I thought they do affect God, I thought there was sinning that absolutely cannot enter Heaven while the other sin can but is still bad against God. How is a venial sin really a sin if it just affects those around you and not God? It still affects God. For an example in the 10 commandments it states that you should love your neighbor and your enemy, that's respecting another person but your also respecting God by doing this.

Okay. I'm really glad this topic came up cause this is one of the few things I know about...

Firstly, the Bible talks about certain things, for instance, dung. If you look at the old translations you will see that word is actually, in today's culture, a profane word.

A curse word, for instance 'ass', is wrong when we take it in the wrong context. If we call some one an ass, we are being demeaning and it's used in a derrogitory way. If I was to say that 'I have to wipe my ass. :)' I would not being using the word in the derrogatory sense.

If I was to say f**k in the wrong sense, then it would be wrong because it is derrogatory. If I was to say that 'I am going to f**k', then I would be using it correctly and therefore not wrong.

Who knows. Jesus could have used some of these words. It doesn't say He didn't.

But this is the logical way of thinking about it.

Did you know 'SHIT' actually stands for 'Ship Higher In Transit.' ??? Because some of the cargo on the ships were being mixed with manure accidentally. Ha. Learn something new everyday.

Well, I hope this helps. Haha. Ask Uronacid. I have the mouth of a sailor. Oh, it is also wrong when it offends some one. Haha. Nuckas.

Also, about taking God's name in vain....That's a hard subject for me. I will never say God damnit unless I'm using it in a sentence like this one. I feel like God is going to strike me down with His vengeance. Haha. But, I rarely take God's name in vain cause I respect it so much. And it kills me when people do. Jeremy.
