J.K. Rowling can pass the torch over to Stephenie Meyer now.

Meyer's Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in her Twilight series sold 1.3 million copies on its first day of release, August 2nd.

For those of you bad with math, that's A LOT of books!

This past Friday night, thousands of bookstores and libraries hosted midnight parties across the country to help fuel these astounding figures.

We mentioned previously that due to the overwhelming demand for the title, the publisher went back for a second printing of 500,000 copies prior to publication, to the current in-print figure of 3.7 million copies.

The publisher has also confirmed the upcoming publication of The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide.

F*CK that! Harry Potter will never be beaten!
My friends and I were just having a discussion about this. We were saying how Twilight is read mostly by teens/pre-teens and Harry Potter spans all generations and has touched more hearts that Twilight EVER could.

F*CK TWILIGHT AND F*CK STEPHENIE MEYER! Bitch.

For real! He wouldn't even be playing Edward if he hadn't been Cedric in HP4.

And like, what harsh struggles has Bella had to go through? Harry Potter gave up his life to save the world, can Bella say that? All she went through was a little tough love. AND she has both her parents.

I'm actually mad that they made my favorite series into a movie.
[Twilight, not Harry Potter].

I am NOT going to see it when it comes out, because my expectations will not be lived up to.

And I don't know if you guys read the series, but throughout the whole thing I always imagined that Edward would have black hair, even though in the books they said it was blonde.

It's going to be overrated. Just like every other book series made into a movie. Uck.

Hmm. Time will only tell. Both are amazingly successful. I would imagine both authors are mature enough to appreciate and respect eachothers' successes.

Then again, there's always this. blink.gif

then what would you call harry potter? a movement?

i was a harry potter fan before i loved twilight. i will always like harry potter, just not as much as twilight. twilight and harry potter have different generas. twilight it purely romance with fiction, mixed in. where harry potter it solely fiction.

harry potter cant be number one on the charts forever. but because the harry potter series is complete there are no more discussions on who will live and who will die. there are no more count downs till the next book comes out or releasing of cover art. everyone knows the whole story of harry potter.

Stephanie Meyer is coming out with another book from the twilight series, midnight sun, so we twilighters still have more to wait for. and talk about.

everyone knew harry potter would die down some day, and at least it was to something as great as twilight.

so it all comes down to opinion when you try to decide whether harry potter or twilight is better.
its obvious where i stand,

Twilight sucks. Really, really sucks. There are about a billion more people who have no idea what Twilight is that did when the 4th rolled around (I'm just going to assume that sentence makes sense because am too lazy to edit). And as many books as it sold, it still is nowhere near Harry Potter's league.

Part of her reason for writing it, as a Mormon, was to "make abstinence sexy."

Wait...WHAT? Why would you buy the books but not read them? Did you just watch the movies and then read the 6th one? 'Cause if so you're missing a whole lotta information.

You'd probably like HP more if you read the series starting from Sorcerer's Stone. Goblet of Fire is better than Half-Blood Prince, IMO. It's the last really good book in the series; the quality of the writing in the last two doesn't really compare to that of the first four.

I have a headache because I LOVE HARRY POTTER But Since I have just started to read Twilight I think Twilight is pretty amazing too!!! Harry Potter has always pwnd all to me but Twilight is starting to test that. But as said earlier in the forum with out Harry Potter Robert Pattinson (aka Cedric Diggory and Edward Cullen) probably wouldn't have gotten the role. But all in all Harry Potter will never truly be out.

LOTR was my LIFE back in the day(I'm totally freaking serious, I was OBSESSED). I have the cardboard cutouts of Legolas & the hobbits(not on display anymore) haha I still enjoy watching the movies but I don't really think about it all that much anymore.

Gah. That is just strange to think about. So I was like ten years old when it started. Though, I don't think it was all that popular until a few years later right?

LOTR all the way. Did you ever go on Entmoot? I didn't get all that obsessive over the movies, the books are the main thing for me.

I have yet to read one book from the Twilight series. My taste for literature is quite biased.

I'll sample something sometime so I can say more. thumbsup.gif

Because Twilight dose come in as an extremely and I mean EXTREMELY close second as my favorite. I just wanted to say Harry Potter is still alive and well!!! biggrin.gif

You know, I just can't get into the author vs author thing. I mean, why not just enjoy the books? I'm not saying that people don't, I just don't understand the "versus" thing. lol

Merge this topic with mines? XD.gif

Kind of hard to beat an original. I mean when you have Mad TV, and Late night tv hosts like jimmy kimmel, jay leno, etc. making harry potter jokes, you know it's pretty popular.

I never heard of twilight. i only knew about it from cB and all the threads on it lol.

-merged, topic description edited. -Rebs
Reason for edit: You never say "mines"; it's "mine." >:| - Cristy

No the girls obsessing are actually in love with the character =/...sigh. haha.

Twitards (yes, they actually call themselves that, and one of my friends pointed out that it's as though they combined "twit" and "retard") like Edward Cullen way too much. As perfect as they think he is (which he definitely isn't), an entire series shouldn't be loved so much just because of this one guy.

QUOTE(banhbao @ Aug 18 2008, 01:26 PM) *
Um. lol of course Stephenie Meyer isn't the next J.K. Rowling. J.K can WRITE. Meyer unfortunately as I've said, cannot.

Completely agreed. Rowling's writing is always so descriptive and witty. Meyer's is repetitive and too straightforward.

I think that the major difference between the two is that while Twilight and Stephenie Meyer are enjoying a huge success right now, Harry Potter is revered as a classic and will more than likely always be looked at that way.

Twilight, like the vampire novels Anne Rice writes, will also see great success for the years to come but will never be held in as high of a regard as the Potter series. They are fun books, nothing more.

The Harry Potter series is arguably up there with the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings series as far as classic novel series go. Meyer will never even be in the same sentence with Lewis or Tolkien.

I can't exactly say JK Rowling is up there with Tolkein, Lewis etc etc, but at least her stuff's enjoyable to read; like Cristy said, it's descriptive and witty.

I've been veering away from Twilight for the past year and I gave up a few days ago and read the first book. It's soo badly-written yet so addicting...

And it really ticks me off when people claim that Stephenie Meyer's an amazing author, and that Twilight is written really well. I mean, seriously, read the very first paragraph that starts the book (excluding prologue):

"My mother drove me to the airport with the windows rolled down. It was seventy-five degrees in Phoenix, the sky a perfect, cloudless blue. I was wearing my favorite shirt — sleeveless, white eyelet lace; I was wearing it as a farewell gesture. My carry-on item was a parka."

No book can be actually good with that kind of beginning. It sounds like a fanfiction imo. :/

Despite all that though, I'm still an Edward Cullen fantard.

I completely agree for the most part. Except, I don't think you should ever ever compare Anne Rice books to Twilight. They're both Vampire series, but Anne Rice is on a completely different level from Stephenie Meyer. She can actually write.

I kind of cringe at the thought of Harry Potter being up there with Narnia and Lord of the Rings, but I think that is more of a personal preference coming through for me. I never got into HP, I tried. I read some of the books, I've seen some of the movies. (I actually really liked the one where Voldemort killed the guy playing Edward). But I just never liked it. It really bored me, and annoyed me to be honest. I might be wrong, but I don't think HP is anywhere near as deep and involved as Narnia or LOTR. Now if HP still holds the popularity it holds now ten years after the last movie is made, it might have more credibility. But right now it is just another fad.

I am a fan of Twilight though. Only because it is like brain candy. I don't have to think when I'm reading it, and it really is like a guilty pleasure. I would absolutely prefer Anne Rice over Meyer though. No contest there.

HA!

Stephenie Meyer can in no way be compared to J.K. Rowling.
Harry Potter is completely incredible. The novels grip you from the beginning, every single HP book meets a new standard.

Stephenie Meyer has her days but I must say i wanted to rip my eyes out during the first half of New Moon.

Twilight is clever but her writing isn't half as good and it thoroughly angers me how they moved the date of the Twilight Movie because now HP and Twilight have to compete for #1 in November.

Wow. You know, I see more inane and cruel remarks from Potter fans regarding Meyer than I do Twilight fans remarking on Rowling. At this point, I'm seeing more maturity from Twilight fans. That's just from personal experience and from what I've responses/blogs I've read.

Oh well.

How can you compare a wizard to a vampire? That's like comparing Star Wars to Lord of the Rings. The only thing that they have in common is that they're never ending and people go crazy-freaking-gaga for them.

I like Twilight better, but that's out of preference. But..still.

I agree with you on that that is why I am sick of people comparing them and why I had a headache before. Because there is no way Twilight can be the "new" Harry Potter.

Eh, personally, I don't like either. I think J.K. Rowling just suddenly threw in the most random of things in her books, nearing towards the end. "Dumbledore's gay!"--okay, but what does have to do with anything in the plot, how does it enhance it, etc.

Twilight is cute, but Stephanie Meyers is not a good author. There is no development in character, and I guess there's just not much substance to Bella and Edwards.

^ I'm glad at least that Dumbledore's sexual orientation played NO PART in the plot, it was more of an afterthought thrown out there, perhaps to enhance sales? At least there wasn't a chapter in the last book where he told Harry he was gay or something. That would just piss me off to no end.

Well actually you can't really say it played no part in the plot, what with Grindelwald. Of course this is just an assumed relationship...
