What the hell has happened to this place? It has gotten to be really boring around here as of late. Now I know that as a mod, I am not supposed to say that, but it is honestly how I feel.
Some of you people need to leave cb, as it has turned into consuming your lives, and you are starting to look petty and childish at the minimum.

If you notice, the same bullshit topics are getting bumped left and right, and everything in cb seems to be going in one big circle. There are only so many times when you can honestly say that it is slow because of summer. Hell, I have more interesting convos and discussions on cbc than I do in cb. As a matter of fact, cbc is way more active than cb is.

My point is this, we have got to start changing things up in the form of new topics, people, and what not. This place really could use a stiff kicking in the ass. I remember when I first joined back in November, I would post like 100 times a day....Now I am lucky if I post 6 or 7 times a day.

COME ON PEOPLE! WAKE UP AND LET'S START MAKING THIS PLACE HAPPENING AGAIN!

This is always what I tell noobs that wander into CBC. CB will ruin your life. They're convinced it's a utopia though. Oh well their fault ;D

Good luck, I think everyone that has really made cb keep going is finally growing up.

Now for the new crowd. I think if we weren't all so critical we could probably get somewhere xD

I think if the forums are redone, it would be good if we get sections more along the lines of Facepunchstudios, and implement their custom forum feature.

Prince while I agree with you, a lot of what you said in your last post is being done right now. We do have a lot of these rules that you mentioned, and I myself as well as other staff members try to implement them daily. It is not one sided though, as we also need you guys help too.

One of the mods there is 12. Age range goes from 9 to 42 at Facepunch.

Rules there are:
1. This rule list is not total, the excuse 'it wasn't on the rules list' isn't applicable. This is not a democracy.
2. Respect each other. Don't call each other names.
3. Don't reply to a thread just to say it's shit.
4. Don't troll. Don't reply to a thread about The Simpsons to say that Family Guy is better.
5. If someone does something wrong, report them. Flaming or attacking them will get you banned.
6. Don't reply to threads that are made with the intent of the user getting banned (ban me threads)
7. Nudity is fine. If you want to post pictures of an erect penis or penetration of any kind do not [img] tag it.
8. Don't post child porn.
9. Purposely breaking any of these rules with an alt account will get all your accounts permabanned.
10. Use descriptive thread titles. Things like 'Help' or 'Something I saw..' aren't descriptive.
11. Do not link, hint or talk about warez. Discussing games that you have pirated is fine - but we don't need to know that you pirated it, or where you pirated it from. Anyone that asks for links to pirated games will be banned.
12. Do not make parody threads.
13. If you're posting a link to a news story say why and/or state your opinion. Do not just post links.
14. Do not copy and paste new threads from a website.
15. Do not post things like 'I smell a ban' or 'this is against the rules' or 'wrong forum'.
16. Spell properly. This isn't GameFaqs.
17. Do not reply to threads just to reply. Replying with things like 'uh.. ya' or 'what' will get you banned.
18. If you're replying to a thread asking for help, HELP OR DO NOT POST.
19. Advertising your website is fine as long as it's relevant.
20. Don't steal stuff and claim it as yours. Don't use this rule as an excuse to bitch if you're not credited for your work. They need to claim that they made it.
21. Read the thread before replying. If you reply to a thread based on thread title you will get banned.
22. Don't make new threads to announce your birthday. No-one cares.
23. Don't make threads to get us to make up your mind about something ie 'Should I get a PS3 or XBox360?'. Make up your own mind. Don't use this rule as an excuse to flame people for making a thread to ask opinions ie 'What is the best MP3 player?'
24. Posting Image Macros will get you banned. It isn't clever. Just use words.
25. Replying with hilarious meme's like 'Stick it in her pooper' will get you banned.
26. Replying to threads like you were the guy they were talking about in the first post isn't funny.
27. Making obvious threads to earn ratings will get you banned.
28. DO NOT ACCESS THE FORUMS VIA A PROXY. If you're viewing the site through a proxy and you have the same IP as someone using that proxy to spam you will also get permabanned. I don't care if your school blocks the forums.
29. Don't make threads about how unfair your school is.
30. Don't make threads about religion, unless it's in a religion forum.
31. Don't make threads about dreams, unless it's in a dreams forum.
32. Don't make threads asking if your computer can run a game.
33. This is not an obituary forum. Don't post threads about how your relative/friend/cat died.
34. Blindly defend Facepunch, even when you know you're wrong.

I think they're pretty effective.

QUOTE(moninja @ Jul 27 2008, 02:13 AM) *
the new crowd is crap.

The new crowd isn't crap. It's just that a lot of them get the wrong impression of CB, leave, and most likely never come back. The ones that survive the initial bashing given to them by the veterans think that the right way to avoid further bashing is to flame the veterans back, and to start flaming other newbies that try to post. That's a misguided, but understandable way of thinking. If you're faced with threats to your pride, reputation, etc., you're going to want to fight back, and also lash out at whoever else you can, and sometimes you end up looking dumb. Other members see your mistake, make fun of you for it, and unless you handle it the right way, they'll keep picking at you until they drive you away or break you down completely. It's just in human nature to do that, and unfortunately, it's manifested itself to an extreme on CreateBlog.

Another problem that I see is that most CB veterans seem to have forgotten what it was like to be new here. I don't know firsthand what CB was like in 2004 (it seems like people were less harsh to newbies back then), but it shouldn't matter what year it is, or how much you want to mock someone you think is "lower" than you. It doesn't matter if "it's just the Internet" and that it's "not my fault if people get hurt so easily"; that doesn't mean that you can't learn to be less cruel to the poor newbies trying to have fun here.

New people don't always get bash. Joanne is a very good example. It's usually because they are idiots that they get flame at.

I don't know... I mean, I was a newbie not too long ago and nobody really tried to bash me. I think it all depends on the way you present yourself. (But then again, it might have been my "joined" date that tricked some people...). And thanks, Tung.

I do see where you're coming from, though, Cristy. There has been a few somewhat newer members that had the potential to be liked by everyone, but they probably saw how the more 'popular' cB members interacted and decided to follow their lead.

I agree with Tung. Most of the bashers don't bash for no reason. (Unless they're ugly, but that's just too bad for them.)

javonn, maybe you get the feeling because you're on staff. it seems like you have to be on top of your game at all times and you can't randomly have conversations which equals lower post counts per day. i felt the same way when i was a mod which resulted in a bunch of days where i didn't even post or do anything.

Also, a good way to keep members in check is to whip out the banhammer whenever possible.
which is how you loser members, douche. don't say "well you get rid of the bad ones and then all the good ones stay." it never works that way.

Prince, I liked it better when you typed normally in this thread. It was easier to take your seriously.

I agree with Javonn that Jusun's presence is important in keeping this forum alive. I mean, what's with the whole arcade thing? From what I hear, it's been in construction for quite some time...

But maybe Jusun has decided that the forum can go on fine without him, and decided to focus more of his time on other things.

I agree with Cristy, to a certain extent. I don't think it's sugar-coating to suggest that some of the problem lies with the 'veterans', in fact quite the opposite. It's simply true that many older members, disatisfied about the current state of cB, have turned to complainig about the changes since the old days, bashing newbies (which DOES happen quite a lot, for whatever reason), and turning to in-jokes for entertainment, which are largely, if not entirely impenetrable to many newer members. I don't think the change in cB can be blame entirely on the people who DON'T post, is what I'm saying.

However, I do very much agree with Javonn that ther is an issue here, but I don't think this thread is any kind of help, other than maybe venting some frustrations. This kind of sentiment has been expressed with increasing frequency for the last 18 months or so, with little effect, mainly because people haven't actually doen anything other than express their sentiments, which is fine, but at some point you have to man up and deal. Be the change you want to see in cB, because, unfotunately, the old members AREN'T COMING BACK. So make new ones feel welcome, and build cB back up to a new place. Unless you do that, then this thread is going to be just another pointless waste of time.

Also, yes, the Jusun issue is a major problem at this point. He doesn't need to be here 24/7, but we need some kind of system where we can at least keep things going from the technical view point. And, yes, get th flipping arcade up.

i agree with both sides of the newbie/vetran thing. i don't think the new people who are coming are all that interesting, but i also think the regular/older members in general have a bad attitude 85% of the time.

as far as jusun, i think he would be useful for technical kinda stuff. i duno, i'm probably the only one who thinks jusun isn't all that important. if it wasn't a technically issue, then i actually never really cared for his input. he usually had no basis for his opinion in the first place since he's never here to know the full extent of anything. i don't think the forums need him as much as they just need good content and interested members.

There's a lot of money in that, so yippee. And frankly, whether or not the speech is boring doesn't change whether or not the content is accurate, so whatever. Most speeches are boring on paper anyway. All in the oratory.

They might be more interesting if they could engage more easily with the general flow of posting. But yeah, I see what you're saying.

And I agree with your thoughts on Jusun, because I've never been one to actively solicit his opinions, but we DO need the technical stuff. If he wants to hand over the responsibilty to someone with more time/commitment, that's cool too, but right now we have a long ass to-do list.

Wait. I remember there was like a whole month period where there was like barely any drama/bashing around the forums, and people started complaining about how dull and boring the forums were because everything was all monotone and "nice."

So now that the bashing and flaming is increasing again, people are complaining about it? What do you people want? _unsure.gif

Actually, a valid question.

he biggest part of the problem is that there is no definable solution, wichis why it falls to the people who are here to try and broaden the community/ We'll probably know what we want whe we see it.

That said, you can't please everyone, and trying will likely lead to some kind of madness.

I agree with this post as well as James. While I also agree that Jusun isn't all that important, I do agree that he needs to be here for certain things. If not then hand the reigns over to someone who can properly maintain/add to the site ala Trish.

First off prince, a fool I am not. James is exactly right by what I meant. Jusun needs to be somebody in control here who can run things and who he can trust like he did with Trish. His lack of communication/upgrading to the site, is not a good look at all.

Honestly, like JC (I think it was) said, Jusun is only seen as a way for us to deal with the technical stuff. I think that if he was around to do the things that we are waiting on him for (arcade, anyone?) then this site would be a lot better. It is sad, though, that all we need him for is the technical stuff. I think he needs to come back and have more of a say in the way that things are done here. Or hand it over to someone else.

^x3 Perfect example of a mod trying to sugar-coat things.

I agree with Tung. Most of the bashers don't bash for no reason. (Unless they're ugly, but that's just too bad for them.)

I know my post is long, but did you read any of it? Sugarcoating is not the same thing as being able to look at a situation objectively and comment on it constructively. I said that both the veterans and the newbies are at fault.

To James's post: You're right about a lot of things. This thread has helped us address the issues that are a part of the larger problem on CreateBlog. But admitting the problem isn't enough; you have to actually try and be the change you want to see.

I think a big part of that begins with learning how to speak more courteously. That doesn't mean that you need to mask your opinion (ie. act "fake") or say the opposite of what you really think (ie. sugarcoat). So don't try to use the "but I'm entitled to my own opinion" card. And if you can't reword your opinion in a way that won't offend the person you're criticizing, then simply don't say it.

For example, when someone with looks below average by most people's standards posts in Members' Photos, there's always a few CB members who will reply to say, "you're ugly." It's okay if you think that, but really, it's not that hard to find something else other than their face to compliment them on, or to just not reply at all.

The same ideology can be applied to dealing with newbies as well. Yes, CreateBlog gets a lot of the kind that type "lyke dis," "like this...........," "like this lol!!", you get the idea. Politely suggest that they not type like that, or just keep quiet and move along on the forums.

I have more to say, but I'll add that later. I know I'm long-winded.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA

That's not looking at a situation objectively. That's bullshit equivocation.

You understand that most of the "veterans" acting up is a direct result of the mods being child molestors right? If the mods weren't total failures, I have a feeling the problem would disappear.

Which is exactly why I'm more of a "lurker" here. People who can't type correctly make me want to pull my hair out.

I don't feel like there is a lack of activity here, just a lack of constructive activity. I posted a question in the Wordpress support forum, it still hasn't gotten a reply. I eventually figured it out myself, but isn't that what Createblog is all about? Website support? The site isn't "The Lounge". It is "Createblog". I've always gotten the impression that the design and create portion is what the focus is supposed to be here. Not "omg ur lyke so fuglyy!!111!!!" Sure, the off topic, general forums can be fun, but it isn't where the focus should be.

Someone mentioned the veterans are "growing up". Shouldn't CB grow up as well?

I just mentioned this backstage, but my internet is down at home (f**king Comcast) so this is the first time I'm seeing this thread.

I need to read through all the pages carefully, but I have skimmed through some of the responses.

Something Trish and I used to talk about (and Dani as well, if memory serves) is that admins here have halfassed privileges. It's not that we are not capable and it's not that we don't WANT to make changes, it's that we do not have access to make those changes. You guys think it's frustrating? Try being among the few responsible for implementing changes when not given the resources to do anything about it. It is my biggest frustration here, beyond general community issues.

Javonn, there is NOTHING wrong with you posting this thread. If anything, it gets people communicating. I honestly don't give a shit if people rant. f**king rant. I'd rather that in a thread like this than the sprinkling of "cB sucks" all over the damn place. That shit does no good. At least here, people can make an attempt to come together and do something about it.

I've been getting some shit about getting in touch with Jusun (oh no, backstage information!). I tried texting him on the number I saw and it bounced right back. I don't like calling people at their home (if that is indeed his home number), but if that's what it has to come to, so be it.

Regarding seasoned members versus newbs. Newbs, wake up. Don't be afraid of the forumdickery that happens here. It's the goddamn internet. If you seriously let people bully you on a forum, you're f**ked in real life. Seasoned members, stop being such assholes all the time. It's OK to be nice sometimes.

(I'll read/respond more as soon as I get a chance)

No, you're all wrong. You know why this place is boring as f**k? Because most of the posts here are bullshit. The bulk of posts, especially in The Lounge and Pictures, are self-aggrandizing "look at me, pay attention to me" posts. CB has become overrun by attention whores.

Once upon a time, the most prominent members of CB were interesting, intelligent folks who had something engaging to say. Now the most prominent members are those who can spam the most and act like they're the coolest people on CB, when really they're just a bunch of self-centered pricks.

^We used to talk about that same thing when it first started happening, or rather, when it first became this big of a problem. What's funny is that back then, people were complaining that it wasn't as good as it was the year before. Now people are complaining that it's not as good as it was then. It's true, this place doesn't feel the same as it did a year ago, two years ago, or even three years ago. Thinking about what it used to be like doesn't help change the problems we're having now, and let's face it - we're driving people away and not doing anything to stop it.

Michael's right. Half (if not more) of the members here read the first post of a topic, respond without reading anything else (except maybe the last couple of posts), and then never post there again. There's no discussion going on, and of course there's nowhere to post when you only post once in a topic and never revisit it. And hell, when people post somewhere and think, "Hmm, I wonder if anyone responded to my post" only to find out that nobody even read it, that doesn't do anything to encourage people to act any differently. The way CB is right now, we have a bunch of people who don't care to read other people's posts, but they all expect other people to read theirs. Do you see where that might be a bit of a problem?

Whoever it is that's proposing we start enforcing the a-hole rules around here, get a f**king clue. Sure, let's send anyone who might be somewhat intelligent packing and attract only douchebags. That's exactly what we want!

I certainly don't have a problem with this topic; if anything I'd prefer to see people talking over problems rather than just stating over and over that they exist like a broken record. I appreciate the constructive responses, and I'm choosing to ignore the idiotic responses from people who clearly didn't take the time to read Javonn's post, much less the rest of the thread. Great job, congratulations on being a part of the problem rather than the solution.

Do you think adding a reputation system would help at all?

I think that may be a good idea, but how would it work? It's not like a bot can decide who is cool and who isn't.
