So my cousin {15 year old 5'9 girl) has just moved from Taiwan and is currently living with me. Aside from her assigned summer reading, I'd like her to start reading some other stuff to expand her vocab asap. Thus, I'm trying to compile a list of books and movies that she can read or watch. I was thinking Disney/Pixar movies as a good start but I don't know what else; as for books, I'm a bit unsure. I don't know if I should just find books that are at her reading level that are BORING/LAME as hell or if I should give her books that are slightly challenging. The problem with that is I don't want her to become frustrated and have to look up a word every 3 seconds. She's been learning a bit of english for a couple of years but doesn't have a great grasp on it yet.
Any advice/tips for someone learning English as their second language is welcome :) |

Why don't you just have conversations with her?
It'll probably be easier since you can explain the meaning if she doesn't understand instead of having to look it all up. When my friend moved here from Taiwan thats what I did...then she started reading Harry Potter. |

^ I don't get home everyday until like 10.30 at night so she doesn't really have anyone to practice with. She's incredibly shy and insecure and refuses to talk to my friends. :(

And that whatever you do, don't let her revert back to Chinese/Taiwanese if she doesn't know how to say something in English. I've heard that a good way for a person to learn a foreign language is to try to think in that language (as opposed to their native one) when trying to communicate, and that must be somewhat true. Instead, have her try to describe what she can't quite say by using English words she does know, and then you say the word(s) in English so she can learn them. |
