Text for Signs

I've started a layout site, and I have a few premade signs. But I need to place my site name on them. I've seen the text on every site sign that matches the sign, but I don't know how to do that. Here's an example:
Could someone please help me with this?

render your picture (crop out the part of the pic that you want)
and just play around with the background remaining. add textures and brushes and make it colorful, i guess? ahaha. and then of course add the name to it.

Okay. I figured out how to crop the picture, but my programs not showing the layers.
And how do I make the text look like that? I can't find any good tutorials for GIMPshop.
