I'm about to go to a Kaplan audition (for teaching SATs) next week and one of the requirements is to make a 5 minute "presentation." The presentation's supposed to be me teaching a classroom something that is non-academic related (an example they gave was "how to read a wine label"). The purpose is to see how I interact with people when I try to teach something that I'm interested in.

I need to utilize the audience and a blackboard, but can't have any props.

I'm really not sure what I would teach. I thought maybe I can give a 5-min presentation about "how to navigate through NYC" and go through the rules of subways, avenues, blocks, different neighborhoods, etc., but... idk. Seems like it might take more than 5 min.

I've played piano for almost all my life, but I'm not too sure if there's anything in that subject I can really "teach" about without having some sort of visual.

Anybody have any ideas about what to "teach"?

The navigating New york thing seems like it would be to technical and complicated for just 5 minutes.

I'm kind of at a loss here... by utilize the audience, does that mean actively get them up and involved, or jsut like, asking questions?

how about teaching people to braid hair? it was the only thing I could think of that involved people without props. eeek I don't know, this is actually a pretty tough task. the problem with the hair braiding unfortunately is the willingness of females in the room to participate for the sake of their hairdos. hm I'm going to keep thinking on this.

oh well if it just involves asking questions and whatnot then SCRATCH the braiding. I thought you had to actively involve the audience.

Hmm, I agree with James that the whole NYC thing seems too complex for 5 minutes.

You could do something like different ways to organize your music or something stupid, IDK. How to load things onto you ipod? How to pick good fruits and veggies at the grocery store?

Haha those are all so random.

I dunno... maybe something like a balanced diet? Like, how to still eat healthily if your a vegetarian... alternate ways to get different nutrients, etc?

A little dull, but could lead to questions, I suppose.

Or would that be too academic?

You can't draw anything on the blackboard to help you explain it? I mean personally if I was to teach someone how to play the piano, or explain why the keys are the way they are or something like that. I would draw the keys on the blackboard or something like that.

If you were to make guide on how to survive in NYC then having little charts on the blackboard or subways, buses, etc. And the pros and cons or each. I mean use the blackboard to the fullest I would say. Even if you can't have props you can always make visuals out of drawings.
