A social construction or social construct is any phenomenon "invented" or "constructed" by participants in a particular culture or society, existing because people agree to behave as if it exists or follow certain conventional rules. One example of a social construct is social status.

Another is pants size. You can go to Vietnam and what's consider "Large" there would be consider "Small" here. Besides there's some countries that large is a size 4 in girls! While here in the U.S a Large in girls pants would be like 13-14. So yeah, there's no right answer about what is large and small in pants size. It's all socially constructed.

so you believe that obesity is a social construct? I agree but at the same time, I disagree. When people are so fat that they can't get out of bed, I don't see it as a social construct. Then again, Americans have been fat for years. It's only a social construct since thin is now in.

In my opinion, the idea that thin is good, fat is bad has always been around. Of course, technically speaking, fat isn't good, it's unhealthy. However, Marilyn Monroe was considered hot back in her day and she was what, a size 10? 12? Something like that. These days that would be considered chubby.

It's unfortunate really. I think that women with curves are sexy and beautiful. Now a days, the majority (not all) would find that Kiera Knightly is the epitome of a beautiful physique, and I think that she's grossly underweight and physically unappealing (although she does have a very pretty face).

And yes, Nate, "gender roles". I was more or less being specific about one particular type of gender role.
