Where are you visiting or planning to visit? Where have you visited?

This summer, I'm going to go check out Dartmouth, Northwestern, and Rochester. UChicago was on my list until I started looking at Northwestern. I'll be checking out the Boston Conservatory just because I'll be in MA with my older brother, and I'll be going to Johns Hopkins to see one of my friends off </3

I've checked out UPenn, Princeton, Columbia/Barnard, Yale, Amherst, Mt. Holyoke, Smith, Hampshire, and UMass (and probably more that I just don't remember). SMU and UTD just because they're right around where I live, too :P

Any other colleges I should check out? I'm really not interested in Brown.

I'm planning to visit Columbia, NYU, and a few CUNYs. I don't really want to look at SUNYs since I'm not interested in them. I want to visit Boston U, UPenn, and Drexel if I can.

Its actually not a bad school. My brother's friend went there and he said he absolutely loved it.

I visited University of Iowa, Drake University, and Montana State. I didn't feel the need to tour University of Wisconsin - Madison, seeing as I've been there a bagillion times and leave near.

Aha and I didn't say but I was just at Northwestern from Thursday-Sunday for my Model U.N. conference. The campus is GORGEOUS and all the staff I met were extremely nice and helpful. The one thing that sucks is that theres one starbucks in the Norris building. There are tons of places to eat around the campus and so many cute little shops.

I can hardly consider going to a college in CA. It's just so far away from the northeast, and that means I'd probably see my brother like once a year, if even that. My brother's best friend's at Northwestern and they see each other every other month. I don't mind being a couple states away from my brother or friends, but to be on opposite sides of the nation? :Z

I love the northeast anyway, even though I don't like the cold. Plus, my cello teacher says you'd get a whole lot more gigs there for cheaper transportation-wise since there's so many people in one area.

Ooh, Tung. I had plans of going to UC Davis in my junior year in highschool. But the drive up there was far too long, so I never actually visited the campus/got to know it enough for me to be remotely interested. =x A few of my friends in San Diego go there though. ^^

I recently visited The College of William & Mary. It's a beautiful campus, and the visit was pretty cool. I'm going to be a grad student there in the fall, so I got shown around by other grad students and really only got to examine the computer center, but overall it was a pretty cool place with a nice atmosphere.

I went to Southern California and visited basically every UC there over spring break. So that was CalPoly, USC, UCLA, UCSB, and Irvine. I've still got a few years before I even have to worry about that, we were mostly there for my older brother.

I would really, really like to see Williams, UPenn, and Columbia.

I still don't know. Unless you just want to have a really expensive social life you can't control yourself, can't make friends without buying them, or just are that desperate to fit in. The Greek system here has 100% lived up to my expectations of it being shitty as f**k.

UCLA- reeeally huge campus, but nice
UCSD- kinda boring, and too big for my taste
Cal State Fullerton- 37,000 kids, but beautiful campus and happy people
APU- food sucked, but nice dorms
Biola University- great food, seemingly happy kids
Occidental College- too small
Whittier College- dingy, crowded, small, and i didnt like it.
Vanguard University- nice location, awesome dorms and buildings, outgoing students

Well, from the way I see it.. the things that bother the people the most like the location (Williamstown, MA), is a plus for me. Such seclusion can make a stronger community. I'm really looking for a close-knit community and great undergraduate focus. Oh and an awesome Asian Studies department too. I like the Junior Advisor program too. Williams is a huuuuuuuuge reach for me though, meh.

As for Amherst, I've thought about it, but it doesn't appeal to me as much as Williams.

What it really comes down to for me is Dartmouth and Williams.
I'm really leaning more towards Williams because I'm rejecting Dartmouth's fraternity community. Not that you can't live without joining, which I'm sure it's possible. Just don't want to be tempted to join one.

I'm not sure if this is the same with all frats, but at Columbia, if you join a fraternity or sorority, it opens up a lot of opportunities for you. Alumni from your frat/sor are excellent connections - I have a few friends in frats that got jobs because of it. It also provides special housing which is an excellent perk - the frat row housing is SO much better than what you have to go through as an underclassman. Another plus is that many frats are based around interest. We have a crew frat, a swimming frat, baseball frat, etc. These are people you spend a lot of time with and living in a frat makes thinks more unified and fun.

Fraternities and sororities also do a lot of events such as bake sales and community service. They sponsor parties, dances, invite guest speakers to the campus, among many others.

So... yeah. That's the plus of joining a frat or a sorority. The application and rush process for most of them is pretty difficult (some make you do stupid things, some make you write essays, etc), so it makes it an impressive thing to put on applications.

Two of my professors went to Dartmouth. One got her Ph.D. from Dartmouth, and she mentions a lot how there was nothing to do and it was way too damn cold.

Another one of my professors technically went to William & Mary, but was "on loan" to Dartmouth for the last few years of his Ph.D. He says he generally found Dartmouth students to be one-dimensional and too absorbed in their studies.

But it is a good school.

I've been going on college tours this entire week.. when school was out..

I went to Brown, Bentley, Princeton, & Northeastern & more.
It was alright. Really liked Bentley's newly renovated buildings, but too bad it has a business focus.
Brown was somewhat a let down for me. I heard stories about police brutality against the students, and segregation.

It's still up for debate whether I still want to apply to Brown anymore.

... I don't know about the frats at your school, but here, many of them have you do academic work while you're rushing. For example, the Latino frat had each of their applicants write a bunch of essays about their history and culture.

I really hope my teacher doesn't transfer around. There was this other kid I knew who was absolutely amazing and by that I mean concertmaster of all-state orchestra... his college professor moved to three different colleges and he moved with him three different times. Then his professor moved again, and he ended up transferring to West Point. Which is good and all, but he had his heart set on doing music .. :|

If I could pick out of any of those schools based on academics and music programs, I'd probably want to go to Rochester or Johns Hopkins. I can't decide between those two, especially since I haven't been/had lessons with their professors.

that seems sort of stupid. i visited the colleges i wanted to apply to the summer before applications and a lot of my priorities shifted. i saved a lot of money by NOT sending out applications to schools i knew for sure i didn't want to go to after the visit.

after you've been accepted, most colleges have an event called "days on campus" or some variation of that... THEN is when you narrow down your choices to the college you end up at from the ones you've been accepted to.

Man, I miss the whole looking at colleges thing (I'm a freak) but those were some fun days. I'm hopefully going to be giving some tours on open days over the summer, which should be neat... Anyway, I went to look at University Of Nottingham, Cambridge, University of Warwick, university of Essex.

I actually hardly went to any open days, because I pretty much had my heart set on Nottingham from the beginning and was confident of getting in, so it all worked out well.

You could probably skip out on Detroit. I live about 20-30 minutes away from there, so I've been there a lot. There's shady looking people roaming the streets at all times of the day. The only college I know of down there is Wayne State University, which is a nice school, but it's right in the middle of downtown Detroit.

If you're thinking of design (architecture or interior) or musical theatre go to the University of Cincinnati. Both of the departments there are really good. Or if you have time head up to Columbus and check out Ohio State.

And if you see a Graeters Ice Cream anywhere, try it. Best ice cream ever.

I don't think that music business is generally a major. We have a certificate program for it, but to be honest it's probably not practical to major in as it is. And while Athens isn't really a city, it is at least somewhere it would make sense to get involved with music business.

can i ask why not uchicago? i'm looking at colleges too, and uchicago is currently on my (quite extensive) list. i haven't considered it seriously yet, so i don't know much about it, but if you could give me a little insight, it might save me a trip out to chicago myself (i live in new york).

i've had my heart set on majoring in music for basically my entire life and uchicago's music program is not nearly as excellent as northwestern. northwestern has an extremely strong academic side as well as a musical side, not to mention i love that campus much much more than uchicago's. after talking to a lot of friends that are already in college, northwestern seems much more competitive academically to boot.

where else are you considering?

since i haven't decided on a major yet, it's been hard to pick schools, but my list of possibilities so far consists of harvard, yale, columbia, cornell, dartmouth, uchicago, amherst, bc, swarthmore, colgate, middlebury.
i'm sure there's more, but i can't think of them right now. i've visited some of those schools, but i'm checking out a few more this summer - hopefully middlebury, colgate, amherst and columbia.

i've heard though that northwestern has a really strong med program, but overall, it's less academically competitive than uchicago...

over the last few weeks i've been to..
columbia, princeton, yale, & NYU.
i know that NYU is a really prestigious school, & some of their buildings are soo beautiful.. but i felt its kinda overrated sometimes.
like they dont really have a campus & the dorms are really small.. so they would recommend students commuting which can be such a dragg..
but the columbia/princeton/yale campuses were soo perfect.
haha the whole college visiting thing makes me worried-- theres a crazy number of smart people all around the world that want to go to the same colleges..

nyu is pretty prestigious; it's also ranked #1 by the princeton review this year for giving out the least financial aid. :(

i mean, i want to do something medical and music (though apparently it's crazy to doublemajor at nwu), so northwestern is pretty ideal to me.

amherst is so pretty! my brother is there.. he loves it. not much sleep though, but he's happy. their financial aid sucks, though.

Yeah.

Well, about the "dumb and apathetic" people, it really depends on what you're looking at. People have this notion that Columbia (along with other good schools) is filled with people who are very political, controversial, and above all, intelligent. However, while a lot of people ARE very involved, you always get your run of the mill "dumb and apathetic" people who don't do anything but party and get trashed every night of the week. It's to be expected on any college campus.


//edit// - and I read before that you were visiting Rice! I was part of the music preparatory program at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music back in high school. Their music program's pretty top notch. I don't remember what instrument you play, but if you're a piano major - there's this hidden hallway with 5-6 practice rooms and each of them have at least one Steinway grand. :D
