When you become a parent, and you have a child around the age of 10-14 years old, would you let them go on the internet? I mean I know I did, when I was 13, but I never go around acting like a complete idiot, and I was way more smarter than say 14 year olds nowadays online. That douche (and you guys know who i'm talking about) makes me question why parents allow their idiotic son kids, to go online. Stay back in the Sandbox. No not cB's Sandbox, but literally the playground Sandbox.

Nope i would not allow my kids on the internet hell no. Dont need to think twice about that. mellow.gif

Unless they went to the library where the time is limited. and they can study the old fashion way perhaps by reading a book? but if it's absolutely neccesary to use the internet they would have to ask me, for permission to use the internet there. happy.gif

Yes... Linux can set rules where you insert keywords for internet use. If the person goes onto a page with those certain keywords existing, the page can be re-directed to where ever you'd like it to go.

So my kids can use Wikipedia to do all the research they need for school and not wonder off into searching for adult material within Wiki.

All these parents now a days don't give a f**k about their kids. They're too worried about makin money and tryin to survive on their own, they forget to become selfless and the family values and how to implement them. That's why society's so f**ked up.

i'd let my kids use it freely. i was given free reign over the internet when i was 10. i learned a lot about many different things, and i don't consider that a bad thing. of course, firstly, i'd make sure i didn't have a stupid kid. ;o

I like to believe that most parents still do give several large f**ks about their kids.

My parents used to limit my brothers and I to an hour on the computer - that's for internet, games, homework, etc, and that really worked until we each started developing separate web-based interests in the mid-teen years. One of my brothers likes to programme and the other to play online games. I use the internet to update my blog, create designs and post on CB; so naturally we branched out, got separate computers and now have as long as we want online to pursue these interests.

Key words are still filtered through the network, but we're allowed a freedom that I really respect my parents for granting us. There's a lot of scaremongering about the internet - but if a kid has an IQ greater than that of a frozen parsnip I'm betting he or she'll have next to no problems online.

So that's what I hope to do for my children. I'd certainly not limit them.

Bolded can be taken as present tense. You can't tell me that that doesn't sound like you don't have kids. I wasn't reading into anything.

My mom let me start going on the Internet when I was about 13, but my time was limited to 30 minutes to an hour.
I would let my kids go online, but I would make sure they understood that if any, like, personal information was given away, they'd regret it. Ahaha. Also, I'd block sites like MySpace/Facebook until I felt they were old enough.

Honestly, though, I hope that if I ever have kids, I would raise them well enough that they would have common sense about what was safe or not.

Well, I think it's a fair statement to say that not all of our parents know as much about the internet as we do. Maybe it'll be that way when we have kids shrug.gif

No not really, because we are 3rd and 4th generation kids who grew up with the internet already around. Our parents came from 1st or 2nd generations where the internet wasn't even existed yet, so that led to why most parents these days being so ignorant about the internet.

i've been using the internet since like i was about 11 years old. but i don't want my kid to be like me, lol. because i'm always on the computer and i don't want that. i can imagine how frustrating it gets for my mom, hahaa. so i would definitely limit their time on the computer.

and it would be pretty awesome if when my kids are like 11 years ago, they could know more than i do. lol.

By the time we have kids though, maybe the computers will be all "old school" to them. they'd probably be using like a phone that's like a computer like a sidekick but more high tech and futuristic..lol

edit: assuming we all have kids when were like 30 or
something. lol

As crazy as it sounds, I don't think I'm gonna allow my kids to go on the internet or let alone watch t.v. Nowadays, you can gain more knowledge by just staring at the blank wall compared to television. Besides, my kids will probably be blind if I let them have a glimpse of technology. pinch.gif I think I'll be a psycho mom.

i'd let them get one because kids will be kids, and taking everything away from them isn't equal to good parenting. it's the bad logic/easy way out that bad parents use.

Nah man... things have definitely changed over times. We can't have that mentality. I believe we should shelter them but also educate them on a mature level, but also not overly shelter them.

I believe once they hit a mature level, it's time to let them grow and experience life without gettin in the way except only to help/assist them when they are in much need of help.

sorry, off topic.

Also I believe everything a child has, is just a privilege to have. Not a right to have. Until they go out and buy it themselves, then they have their right as they own it.

as long as you have a content blocker, the web is, for the most part, safe. Facebook, of course, is very safe; my kids can get on that whenever they want. Though, I think in the future, facebook will be old news. There will be some virtual thing.. heh.

lol @ facebook being safe. not if the right douche comes along, and have one, and doesn't know how to set up the privacy settings. and also adding and accepting friend requests from strangers. facebook is big time for online molestors and stalkers.

I'm a very liberal parent (to an extent), so of course I'll let my son use the internet. It's fine unless it interferes with school or if I catch him doing naughty things (or reading naughty things). Luckily right now, he's only on Cartoon Network.

I have 3 kids & all of them use the internet. My daughter is now 18 & has been using the net since she was 11.I have never had a problem.I have monitored what she was doing at all times. At first it was just IM talking to friends & family. It of course graduated to things like msn groups as she found an interest in psp tag making. As she got older & more net wise she began using myspace, facebook & Bebo.I must say i have always made her aware "Strongly" of the freaks & weirdos out there. My sons are 14 & 7.My 14yr old is disabled & has no interest other than looking for playstation game cheats & playing a few simple online games. As for my 7yr old he is pretty much the same but has an interest in watching funny videos.Which is "strongly" monitored by myself & his dad.We sit with him & help type out the search & watch together.I am sure his interests will expand to myspace etc as he gets older. But he will be "WATCHED" by mum & dad.And all the kids know that mum is the computer geek in our house & can find out everything and anything they do online. ;-)I am lucky i must say that my kids are good & realize the dangers & responsibilities of the computer & internet use."I make them aware"

Y'know, I think little Silas may well turn out to be a genius. Or a nutter. That part's kinda relative.
Hopefully, he'll decide to go to the genuis side. wink.gif But I wouldn't mind if they went to watch TV at somebody elses house or use the computer there. I just wouldn't prefer it to be at my house. I mean, I got on the internet at the age of ... very early. My grades could be better and probably my eyesight as well. With such easy access to porn and hentai, its no wonder people are so horny these days.

Lets see...even when I first even got access to internet I could do whatever I wanted. That was in 3rd or 4th grade I think.
