Don't. If you're too dumb to know it's okay if used safely, you don't know how to use it safely.

Yeah just use it if you only know how to do it safely, and if not, you can get whole albums of Megaupload and Rapidshare.

Pretty much that's all I have to say.

I am a very active Limewire user. I still continue to use it despite the fact that I received a virus from it. Just be careful, and keep in mind you're taking risks. Just because they're mp3's it doesn't make them good or bad. Any file can be a bad file.

I've never gotten any kind of viruses from Limewire ever, I've been using it frequently for two years, I guess I'm lucky.

Of course, it has chat rooms of nearly every genre possible in the world, but only the linux version has it, which is called Nicotine. Linux version has some exclusive perks.

But regardless you still get a crap load of chatrooms and can still look up nearly any song you can think of, and most likely it exists.

Did you know there's many small malicious files out there that anti-viruses never detect?

Remember back in the day when trojan programs existed? They were basically viruses with networking tools/ability. They had all the neat lil tools, like computer manipulation, taking screen shots or even fraps (video capture).

Basically if it wasn't for trojans, there wouldn't be spyware, malware, adware etc... which anti-viruses rarely detect.

Anyways never say never :P

i do recommend it =]
i used frostwire for about..3 yrs. doing well =]

its okay.
but now i have a question...

how exactly did you download frostwire??? on the site it keeps saying that i can 'download now', then i go to another site with a button that says 'download now', but when i click it then i go to yet another site that says i'm being redirected to a third party site. after i click the link (because the redirection is taking a while), i click 'download now'..and then i get redirected. again.

i did the same cycle a few times so now i'm pretty much stumped. help?

//EDIT
nevermind i got it lol. all i had to do was click the popup button ^__^"

uhmm if you mods don't mind please don't close this until i ask?? just in case i have some more questions :)

Personally I don't think you can get viruses from limewire, if you don't go crazy and download the most obvious candidates for software, watch out for songs that are more than 4mb. Generally a 3-4 minute mp3 file is about 3.5mb, so don't go downloading the ones that are in the 250-300mb range if they're not supposed to be albums.

great advice, i'll be looking out for that. thanks!

I use the very old version of bearshare that was before they upgraded and shoved a bunch of adware crap like most of the p2p programs do. But I haven't actually downloaded any music for about a few months. I buy my music now. =( I think it's a combination of Pride and Paranoia.

just use bit torrent. it's safer in terms of not getting viruses. most of the torrent files comes with comments people leave behind, and they usually tell others not to download it if it's a fake file or not. limewire is so 2005 mang.

You gotta delete them from your registry... if you don't know what you're doing, I'd advise you have a PC technician do it for you. The registry system is very delicate.

I got a virus from it, but I kept my songs.
I was gonna keep a good computer, and a bad computer.
Download the music on the bad one, then transfer the songs onto me back up hard drive. Unfortunately, my dad wiped out my computer before I told him.

If you're willing to do that, it's alway an option.

I used to use Limewire but after reading about how some girl got fined or sued (one of those) because it was illegal, I deleted it. whistling.gif itunes?

Limewire's not illegal, most of the sharing that goes on through limewire is illegal. The program itself is perfectly fine. Your chances of getting busted through limewire are pretty slim unless you're on a college campus, though. The RIAA is full of shit.

since so many people download no one will ever catch everyone. the people most responsible are the ones who post thousands of songs, album rips online for free.

Fiction.

I've downloaded countless programs, including my treasured Photoshop, and my computer doesn't seem to be affected too badly. The "virus" loves me.

Not really...there's a lot of bad things out there but that's only a fraction of the free things online. 99% of the things on my computer are free and I haven't had any problems, except once. Although, I did pay for a couple songs. But only 'cause I had a gift card.

Actually, if you're "sharing" files, then you're more likely to get caught. Although this might not be the case for bitorrent (not sure though), since you're sharing parts of files. ermm.gif

I've never used Limewire, but my bf did a few times. He never got caught. We usually use bittorrent to download stuff (programs, drama, anime), but I also use irc often whenever I can. When I'm at school and I can't use bitorrent, I can still use IRC as that's a "chat", even though I send and receive files.

Also if you need music, there's so many other ways to get it through direct downloads. I get all my songs for free through direct downloads and I have never gotten a virus. It's not thaqt difficult, I mean I found things through google and such. You can get all mainstream and older music somehow, as it is available without having to download programs or pay any fees. I'm not going to tell you where, but I'm saying that it's out there. Granted, there is a chance you could get viruses, so use common sense and don't download from shady websites. kthx.

lmao @ "anything found online is basically a virus."
Oh yea, so when I downloaded iTunes (free), it contained a virus that has turned my computer into a giant brick. rolleyes.gif I mean, seriously, what kind of BS is that? laugh.gif

"Music is everybody's possession. It's only the publishers who think people own it." - John Lennon.

So download illegally out the wazooie. But just remember that musicians need to eat. So be nice and don't rip off the little guys and struggling indie bands. If nobody paid for music all the time, it'd be almost impossible for musicians to be musicians. Bands hardly make any money touring either, unless they're really big.

But if you don't want to pay for the CD of someone who's dead or someone who has a multi-million dollar mansion, then it'd be a good idea to just not pay.

Well you can't really say that something is "much more safer." It depends on how you use it, that's all. Although I think some crap came in when my boyfriend's brother downloaded music on limewire.

I have never used bittorrent for music. Heck, I don't even need any programs for music. You can get almost any song (besides indie songs and maybe those Myspace songs and a couple of other stuff) from direct downloads if you know where to look. That's all I'm saying in regards to music.

People tend to use torrents for larger files, aka pirated films, programs, etc.

Only if you put up a server which holds archives such as music/movies and you let people download off of you.

I'm pretty sure you're just as susceptible uploading through torrents. It's pretty easy for internet providers to try to interfere with your illegal activities by capping you if you're uploading/downloading too much through torrents.

There's no way you're going to get caught for using limewire a few times, though, unless you're downloading or something by asshats like that.

What do you mean by "capping"? Capping is only a limitation of speed/bandwidth. And if that was the case, then call in as an irate customer, and demand that they bump up the decibels on both upstream and downstream or you'll simply close the account and go with their competitors service.

Plus torrents are a thing of the past. Private newsgroups and private blogs are the best, download truly at 8mbps+. In my case sometimes I hit 18mbps (18,000kbps) on private newsgroups.

That is what I mean by capping, and I don't know if it's a universal issue, but comcast does it and more than likely would not raise it because of the torrent thing (I'd site what I mean, but the search function doesn't work on the site where I found the article). Saying you'll change to another service is great and all if there are in fact other options, but in a lot of places there aren't.

Hmmm... funny I use comcast. I noticed I was only gettin 5mbps. I called them, told them I have latency issues and I need to have the upstream/downstream decibels bumped up. They say they couldn't, I asked to speak to a tier 2 technician. Told the technician they must raise the bandwidth or I'm closing the account (which consist of On demand/HD channels and internet) and switching to Bellsouth (durin that time). That did the trick and bumped up the cap, way over the normal residential cap. thumbsup.gif

Well, I'm on school internet, where I haven't had a problem yet but have absolutely not control over anything. I'll try that if I run into a problem at home, though. Not that threatening to switch to Bellsouth has made them sort out our phone issues yet, but whatever.

Last semester I built my own file sharing software. It was awesome -- fully distributed, so there was no central server, and encrypted with 128-bit encryption. It used a combination of public key encryption and symmetric key encryption, like SSH. I used it for research on distributed networking protocols, but some people actually used it for "real" purposes. We never completely finished it, but source code is available.

just use bit torrent. it's safer in terms of not getting viruses. most of the torrent files comes with comments people leave behind, and they usually tell others not to download it if it's a fake file or not. limewire is so 2005 mang.

torrents are so slow... I use limwire for music and torrents for movies, programs etc, oo and torrents have more viruses than limewire just to let you know, but again your antivirus system can recognize pefectly normal files as viruses, like keygens :]

Well for torrents, depends on what you're downloading. If you're downloading pr0n or from some shady website, then that's pretty much the risk you'd be taking on yourself.

Nicki - we don't get "capped" or whatever it is. And well, from all the torrents that my bf and I have d/led, we haven't gotten a virus from any yet. But I know just from songs d/led form limewire, there was a virus that was d/led as well with the song -- well we didn't d/l the song, more like his brother did when we weren't home, lol. So really it depends on a case-by-case basis, I guess.

But I'm going to say this one last time: It's not even that difficult to find any song that you need want through DDLs (direct downloads), as long as you know where to look. And the speeds can be even faster as well.
