- Sammi (ersatz)
- Nicki (paperplane)

This topic is sorta debatable because of biased opinions. I mean I agree with a lot of things Tamacracker says however I don't like his approach towards it.

Well, debate is often less about what you say and more about how you say it. The powers of persuasion, unfortunately, are not slaves to reality. But, that's why you have to have competent contributors and detractors... without all of us yelling at one another, this wouldn't be half as fun, interesting, insightful, or rewarding.

Nailed it on the money.

Sucks that if someone tells truth in a debate all it takes is a curse word to screw it up. And I notice with some of the debates here on this forum, they almost become laughable. They fall off topic, they become flaming arguments, it becomes too personal, and people generally misinterpret things. I don't like debating with people who put words in my mouth or twist what I say, or get on a whole different level than needs be.

And most of all, I dislike debating with females (no offense, no woman-hater)... females tend to have all those attributes that I've mentioned, and those are the types of attributes that ruin the fundamentals of debates. And we all know that men and women think completely differently than each other.

Exactly. And nothing is worst than fallacy in a debate. And I can agree that females tend to have logical fallacy, thus creating unneeded arguments.

That's why men tend to let their women just win the argument, because there's no right in a man's word.

You have read Fae's posts, right? Because your theory would definitely exclude her. I respect that you have an opinion on the matter, but I don't respect your opinion.

Those comments are entirely unnecessary and really uncalled for. I'm pretty liberal in my approach to moderating here, but please at least make an attempt to be civil, especially in this forum. It's in the forum rules, which are listed above (and are visible even as I type this response).

I would say that Nate (NoSex), Fae(Spirited Away), Sammi (ersatz) and Brandon are the best Debaters, in my opinion. They present their arguments logically and don't push their opinions on others.

Was that Fae who claimed our country is not in recession, when it clearly is? If so... I rest my case.

Is that an opinion given by females exclusively? Or does the fact that she's a woman automatically disqualify her from being a legitimate debating partner?

No. Non of that. I'm simply saying that if it was her who tried to tell me and the rest of us that there's no recession as a fact then I rest my case in terms of why I don't like to debate with her.

And I should have been more specific, I believe that "generally" speaking, women are not good for debates because of the fallacies they bring to the table.

And best of all, their lil friends go off agreeing with them which only shows who's the sheeple and who are the independent thinkers.

Ah. I should clarify that my italicizing of "her" was merely to point out that she was female. Damn internet and loss of context.

I like "generally" speaking better. I know, it seems like such a silly little thing, but my opinion of you as a debater would completely diminish if I were to think that you didn't debate with certain individuals based solely on their gender.

It was her. I agree with her, though. Economic downturn =/= recession. People made some stupid choices, some really stupid choices, and there are people who are hurting. There are plenty of people who are doing just fine. I've felt nothing of this "recession". Anyways, we'll just see how things turn out :)

Can you give me an example of a recession prior to the one that I as well as many many many many many other economists agree exists today?

Look up the word recession, that's exactly what's been goin on for a few years now. Specially with the fact that the war in the Middle East is costing us 12 billion dollars a month. =\

We can't call this a downturn, unless you plan on calling every day a down turn for economy. Downturn only happens once per period, not consistently, if that's the case, then it is called, "recession". Technically speaking.

downturn

A decline in security prices or economic activity following a period of rising or stable prices or activity. Even strong bull markets are subject to occasional downturns.

This isn't happening, because the fact of the matter is, every time the stocks (generally) go down 10 points, it goes up 5 points... this is like gas prices. Every time the gas goes up 20 cents, it drops 10 cents, then rises another 20 cents, and drops another 10 cents... the gas is "increasing". There's no upturn in the stocks and anyone who's claiming their is, is a lethargic lying devil.

By the way I listen to 610AM (which is a right-wing republican/conservative radio channel)... economy is always the open argument of the morning. And they put a lot of economists on their radio show which all agree that the economy is going through a recession slowly but surely.

Rebecca, that was a joke.

I could take Tamacracker's debating more seriously if he wouldn't judge other people's abilities on broad generalities such as gender, that aren't actually applicable any more applicable to the girls who post in debate here (all three, four of us?) than the guys.

You love me.

P.S. The idea that women are worse at debating because women, inherently, present more fallacies is, in and of itself, a fallacy. It's a hasty generalization.

i duno what all the talk about women is about, especially with fae being one of the best here. nate and fae are my favorites. nate is the only person who's posts i come away from feeling like i've learned something. i like steven's debates when he's being serious. he can make some really good points. as much as i'd like to hate on tamacracker, i won't because he sparks more debate. he would be a lot better if his delivery was better. my delivery isn't that good either though.

i like reading all the posts by the debate regulars, especially because there's only a handful who keep that forum going.

They're generally the same sweety. downturn is a term used when the stock drops, then the next day or even the next week it goes right back up and stays stable.

It's like a bobbing lure. When you throw the fishin line into the water, the bob (the red/white plastic ball that keeps the lure from sinkin) goes underwater, then pops back up again and it bobs up and down until it finally stabilizes.

recession on the other hand is like grasping at straws, you're sinking into a quick sand trap. You struggle tryin to keep your body above the trap, but no matter how much you try to stay up, you still sink. this has been happening for a long time.

And what people should realize is... that the economy effects classes from the bottom up. So people who are low class get hit first then as the economy worsens it goes up the latter of classes.

So people like us who can even afford a PC have no perception of this recession because it hasn't effected us yet.

Take a look at those bargain traders, homes, boats, vehicles etc... those are properties from people who could no longer afford their property. And this all started to become bad 2 years into the war... and it has been gettin worst and worst.

I can do without the patronization. I know what I'm talking about. (Which would be recessions, not downturns. Not the same thing. Downturn can lead to recession, but if there's downturn it doesn't necessarily mean there is recession.)

I'm not talking about what a recession is like, I'm talking about what a recession is. Regardless of similies, regardless of the economy's effect on people, technically speaking there's still a case to be made in economic terms to say that we aren't in a recession.

reˇcesˇsion 1 (rĭ-sěsh'ən) Pronunciation Key
n.

1. The act of withdrawing or going back.
2. An extended decline in general business activity, typically two consecutive quarters of falling real gross national product.

3. The withdrawal in a line or file of participants in a ceremony, especially clerics and choir members after a church service.

Whatever... I'm not gonna argue this, I've made my point. I'd advise you take a look at the stocks for 1 month and there's your proof. It'll be the same as gasoline but the opposite. If there's downturns constantly with no upturn (going back above the original number prior to downturn) then you start to get into recession. But if there's downturns then upturns, then it's basically an everyday downturn.

Only because you can't prove me wrong and I have an army's worth of economists to back up my claims. =\

Here you go, princess.

Recession in terms of economy and economy only:

A significant decline in activity spread across the economy, lasting longer than a few months. It is visible in industrial production, employment, real income and wholesale-retail trade. The technical indicator of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country's gross domestic product (GDP).

Why do you think Bush gave us another $300-$1,200 on top of our tax returns? =\

You know, I think you create your own problems when it comes to debating girls.

And no. You said you were done arguing with me first (ha!), so really not being able to prove you wrong has nothing to do with anything. Especially as it wasn't my goal; I'm not saying there isn't a recession, just that it's not unreasonable to say so.

Not enjoying your debates has nothing to do with this particular one; even when I'm not the one arguing with you, I still don't enjoy reading your posts.

I totally remember Kryogenix back in 2004-2005 with his Ness Avatar, I believe. Him and this debate thread has actually influenced me into taking debate in high school around that same time.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe it was him and fae always debating against each other. I would actually like to see kryogenix become more active in this thread. He is my e-DebatorHero. Lul.

Are you freaking serious? She was one of my favorite people who inspire me to always wanting to join the debate team in my freshman year, participate in discussion, socratic seminar, and class argumentative at school.

Not to mention, Justin, Anna, and the rest of other people were the factor to where I am now.

I'm glad these popular debaters along with rest of unpopular ones brought an amazing influence to the debate forum. I read like every topic out there and it helped me so much on essay, through school, and finals because what I learn in the debate were "general knowledge" or familiarity.

At the same time, I gotten much more bitcher with my impatience.

But now, I'm falling apart in my "debate world" at school since the people left. A lot of the NEW arguments, topic, and issues that I'm facing are challenging now. I never had these previous exposures to recent issues because everyone in createblog are gone.

I'm sorry I've neglected this forum for so long; I've been busy with work and........ well... gaming.

Anyway, at the time I made the comment about the economy not in a recession: it wasn't (or did you want to debate otherwise?). And guess what? It still isn't. Just because consumer confidence is low doesn't mean it's a recession =) However, with reading the papers and whatnot, things certainly do not look good on all fronts (how unfortunate). We won't truly know until those slowpokes at NBER make some kind of announcement, but even then, my views aligned with many other economists (having read their reports, which proves I rarely think for myself).

It ain't over til the fat lady sings, ladies and gents. Though, I hope she keeps her mouth shut for everyone's sake.

I hope you guys are doing great and having an awesome time with life.

I'll check back to see if you wanted to debate whether we were in a recession at the time I claimed we were not.

Hi and thank you.

I had a hard time finding the debate forum. I thought it was closed down or something.

Bitch please? You didn't even know what recession was after I posted the definition. Then when you realized it... you kept quiet. rolleyes.gif

Stick to your highschool education and leave the adult conversations to adults.

Um, no. None of that is remotely true.

Get off your high horse and go post somewhere with people your own age. It says a lot that you're so insecure you have to bash people for being younger than you all the time.

what does that have anything to do with anything? see, in this whole forum topic you have bashed and actually made a remark that could be insulting to all women. choose your words carefully next time and if you don't like what they have to say then take it to the PM.

NOW! back to the topic at hand. i would have to say that i favor JC and brandon for master debaters. they both have very interesting points of view and it's always good to see another perspective when it comes to a topic.

Just because you say something proves my stupidity doesn't make it true.

-_-

... since when do you report for the NBER? If you're here to make an official announcement as to when the actual recession started (or will start), please give me your credentials for doing so. As of February, there was still controversy as whether the US will be in a recession. There were those who predicted a temporary slowdown, and there were those who predicted a recession in our midst. Either way, they all have more credentials than either one of us. If anything, I'm sorry for over-reading and believing the words of the latter group rolleyes.gif . Being an optimist sucks sometimes because you'll have to eat your words, and suffer the reality. But oh well, you live and you learn and you continue to hope for the better.

And stop crying over spilled milk. If you're "right" and I'm "wrong" about the matter, then we all lose anyway =).

Having said that, regardless of the change of screen names (since a year or two agao) I am still Fae.

Ya... look at this shit. And yall think I don't know shit.
