Okay, I'm kind of trying to lose some weight, but a lot of times, I feel like I eat too much.It's not like when I eat a meal, I eat until I feel like I'm going to be sick or anything like that; I try to eat small portions.However, I tend to snack a lot during the day instead of eating real meals.Like, I'll eat a Poptart for breakfast, skip lunch, but then eat a few snacks in between breakfast & dinner.
There are some days where I feel like I eat wayy too much because of it.But, I feel like if I were to eat three meals, I'd still end up eating a lot of snacks in between anyways, and that would just make it worse.

I try to eat healthy.I'm a vegetarian and the only snack-type food we really have in my house are animal crackers && pretzels (and chocolate, but I try not to eat a lot of it).

Basically, my problem is I feel like I eat too much, but I want to lose weight.I feel like I have pretty much no self-control. :/

Sorry that this is kind of long.

Being a vegetarian doesn't guarantee weight loss. Vegetarians are actually usually fat because they have candies and junk food as alternatives to the lack of protein and meat in their diet.

Poptarts are pure sugar. . .you're not really eating healthfully. Skipping meals is bad; it's better to have small meals in the day than to pack it all in at once or do it every other day. You have no self-control because you're just eating trash in place of real food that will get you full. Eat fruits, raw vegetables, no coffee, no soda, no poptarts, no fruit juice or those stupid "fruit" alternative snacks. . .get your vitamins in. Fish is good for you, but if you're so anti-animals, then that's your choice.

Also, if you really want to lose weight and get rid of fatty deposits, you should exercise and drink a lot of water to clear your system.

I usually don't eat a lot of candy or anything like that.I think the Poptarts are the least healthiest thing that I eat.
I eat a lot of meat substitutes that have a crapload of protein in them (veggie burgers, veggie ground "beef", things like that).

I do eat fruit, I don't drink coffee or pop (water's the only thing I drink).And I'm trying to excercise more. ^^;;

I appreciate the advice.

Under-eating results in muscle catabolism, which will cause you to store more body fat as a defense mechanism. You're in an easier situation by over-eating slightly. And you should be eating at least five small meals a day to maintain your metabolism.

The key is to eat healthier foods that have a low caloric density. Compare drinking a glass of milk to an equal portion (in calories) of lean meat. Liquid calories are much more condensed, and, therefore, less fulfilling for the same amount. If you want to cut down on the amount you eat, emphasize foods that are more fulfilling in fewer calories. A Pop-Tart for breakfast doesn't fit that bill.

@Reidar: I had to read through that twice to make sure I understood what you meant (and I'm still not completely sure).I think you're basically saying that I should eat filling foods that aren't high in calories...?

@highwayto4355: I'm just not comfortable with the way I look.I think I'd look at feel a lot better if I just lost 5-10 pounds.
EDIT: The picture in my profile is also a couple months old, so I've gained a little bit of weight since then.Also, I think that the angle that I took the picture at makes me look thinner.You can't tell that my face is kind of chubby or that my thighs are big. XD

>_< That's what I'm doing now.

Yes.

By the way, you shouldn't completely avoid sugar. When you exercise, you use up fuel in your body called glycogen. To replenish glycogen levels after working-out, you should have a healthy source of sugar, like fruits.

Well, I guess when you feel a craving to snack when you're not really hungry, try to replace it with something else. For example, when you wanna snack, go and brush your teeth. It'll cut you back from having the snack and its good for you too. _smile.gif Or you can have a fruit or carrot/celery everytime you crave. Baby steps.

biggrin.gif I do that. Or, I chew gum. With gum in your mouth you really can't eat anything. But...I'm pretty much a failure at dieting. I'll try, and it will work out for a good month, but then....it always goes wrong. I work at a dance academy...and little girls will have birthdays and bring cupcakes...and they'll come up and be all sweet and offer me one....who resists cupcakes??

But good luck. thumbsup.gif It's hard. I understand.

A cheat day every week can be beneficial in losing weight. The dietary cholesterol and fats increase testosterone levels, which aids in fat burning processes.

Ooh, i like what everyone has mentioned.

also, to curve cravings (i love brushing my teeth as well!), try popping in a mint or something low-calorie that you can keep in your mouth for a while.

and DO NOT skip meals!!! trust me, it does not help at all in the long run when trying to lose weight. like everyone has mentioned, a pop-tart is not a good choice for breakfast. try some oatmeal or a bowl of cereal, made with whole grain.

as far as snacks go, there are SO many healthy options! animal crackers can be high in sugar with little dietary fiber (which means it won't fill you up very easily) and pretzels have lots of salt.
this is my absolute favorite site that gives me good food choices happy.gif :

I know how you feel. I eat a lot when I'm at home and the food is just there, so I snack. I've never been the type to sit down and eat a full meal. Poptarts aren't very good for you. I'd suggest cutting back on your sugar and eating better carbs like whole grains (not whole wheats). Since you don't eat meat, make sure that you get enough protien, do you eat a lot of beans and lentils? Fiber rich foods are also a good thing to add to your diet and can help you lose weight. Our bodies can't digest fiber, and it fills us up.

If you aren't too keen on the nutitional side of things, check out some sites. You're fairly thin (a lot smaller than I am) and I don't really think you need to lose weight; but if you want to be healthier, go for it.

I like to use SparkPeople, because it's free. You can also track your food and pretty much any nutrient you'd like to, such as protien and vitamins. Plus, there are some really nice articles there. I've lost some weight since I joined thumbsup.gif

@CapCaDancer: Yeah, I chew gum a lot when I actually remember to go out and buy it. ^^;
Ahaha.I don't know a lot of people who could resist cupcakes.

@Reidar: I heard about that once, but I didn't think it was actually something that would work.Thanks again.

@Teesa: Coolness!I just skimmed through a few things on that site && it seems pretty helpful. _smile.gif

@karmakiller: Thanks a lot. :] I'll check out that site.

You'll have to eat more than a poptart, if you want to stay full from breakfast to lunch!

Make sure you have a full breakfast that will fill you up and hopefully, it should keep you from snacking.

Don't reject sugar because, since I don't eat alot and take in what I need, I tend to get dizzy spells,
and they kinda suck, so don't. tongue.gif

Unless that picture isn't you, you're being too self conscious Britt. You're skinny. Why don't you just try exercising a couple of times a week before you trim down your eating habits hm?

Well you know eating like that is actually bad for you. You shouldn't eat until you feel full. If you want to eat healthy, you've gotta eat vegetables, fruits, grains/wheat, beef, poultry, and fish. Try to eat small portions every 3 hours and try to eat 5-8 meals if possible.

Example of healthy food: Eggs, oatmeal, cereal, banana, apple, orange, salad, mushrooms, peanuts, rice (specially brown/yellow), beans, lean skirt steak, chicken breast, turkey breast, turkey/chicken sandwich, whole wheat bread, tuna, salmon, sword fish, breakfast bar etc..

Try to stay away from fried foods, fast food (mcdonalds, taco bell, burger king, etc..), sweet/sugar cereal, soda, pasta (you can have this once a week though), pizza, chinese food etc...

Make sure to drink plenty of water (at least one gallon of water a day). If you want something sweet to drink, drink gatorade/powerade.

Poptart isn't too bad.. but it is considered unhealthy, it's too sweet. Never skip a meal, this is a bad habbit. You can eat a fruit or salad or even a granola bar for a meal.

Technically speaking, 3 meals really isn't enough. That's why people tend to eat BIG meals three times a day because they think the more they eat the longer the energy will stay. Fact of the matter, you're supposed to eat small meals through out the day to stay fully energized.

QUOTE

You're a vegetarian by choice? Or do you just dislike the taste of meat and enjoy vegies more?... Vegetarians truly aren't healthy... no matter how much they try to convince people. Also... I thought vegetarians didn't eat anything involved with animals? Such as milk.. or chocolate?

I believe if you look like one of them people from Schindler's list you really should switch your diet up, cuz you aren't healthy.

Ok so your problem is simple... just stick to eating vegetables and fruits and stay away from sweets/sugars/oil. Eat 5-8 meals a day and drink 1 gallon of water a day. You'll be pleased knowing you're losing weight without using a treadmill.

By the way... you're actually skinny. There's no weight to lose o.O;

Also, you're 14, am I right? You little cute people will loose your puppy fat - but not you, because you don't even have any! biggrin.gif

What is a Vegetarian?

A vegetarian is someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy products and eggs (preferably free-range).

Basically, I originally stopped eating meat because I thought I would be able to make a difference && the more I read online about it, the more I liked the idea.I realize that just not eating meat won't change much in general, but for me as a person, I feel a lot better.(I worded that badly. >_<)

If you want to get in shape, not skinny, you need to make sure you get enough protein. I eat meat and don't enough protein. I eat beans and chicken and some dairy. Most nutritionist recommend 1 gram of protein per pound on your body. It helps you feel full, and your body burns the most calories while digesting it. Obviously, I'm not a doctor, I'm just repeating the things that I've learned from my sources. If you have a healthy BMI you shouldn't worry too much, and if you esspecially don't know much about nutritional stuff, you should probably talk to a nutritionist; someone with a degree.
