Require a college education to be a police officer, increase pay so that one could make a decent living making the job sound more appealing. Requiring a college education would help weed out the complete idiots that cops tend to be. Just a thought :)

I wasn't stating an absolute. I was making a broad suggestion.

My cousin is an officer in NY and he makes enough money to have a lot of vacation time and this year he bought a house. There's lots of other training that people have to go through to become a police officer, although I'm sure that varies in a lot of places.

I never said it was required. I was saying it would be a good requirement, imo.

This reminds me of a notice that just hit the door earlier today. My neighbor is apparently applying to be an officer, and the police must ask around their neighbors to see if they hold a steady reputation. I'm guessing that both a good rep as well as decent education does keep police enforcement steady. It's better because the more educated person will have good knowledge of what they're doing, since being an officer is basically helping to keep the town together, more than what it sounds.

Civil service background checks are the ABSOLUTE WORST. They will find out any and everything about you. Out here, the chief, deputy chief, and FBI show up at your door for your Fire Department investigation/interview.

I think I heard it was some where around sixty to seventy thousand a year. But I guess it's really stressful down there. Big city livin'. Cops have to go through their own basic training, but around here I don't think they need a college education. |

Being a cop is a questionable job either way. If you follow every rule down to the books than you come out as an a-hole cop. If you're a very laid back cop than you come off as a lazy bastard.
I prefer laid back cops. There's just things out there that really isn't worth causing much trouble. As much as it is their job to stop it, it's just not worth it. |

I respect the profession of law enforcement. That's where it stops. From then on out, its a case by case basis. I've been mistreated, beaten, lied to and setup by police officers. I've also witnessed first hand how a police officer can truly make a difference. Education has nothing to do with an individual's ethics.

True but there tends to be a difference in character between educated individuals and people who could barely get their diploma in high school. I know there are always those exceptions, but I tend to see people who don't strike me as a corrupt cop as educated. |

Well, I know that to be a cop in my state that you need to have college hours in criminal justice and other law related classes. I don't care for cops, but for me to say that all of them suck based on my experiences would be a hasty generalization. If you want to be a cop, go somewhere where there's enough crime for you to make a living, like NYC, or you can become one of the typical small town doughnut-eating-take-out-your-anger-at-your-lazy-job-on-small-town-kids kinda cop.

I agree... I'm sick of stupid cops pulling people over for no "true" reason just to give out a ticket so they can meet their quota. I'm sick of the shit -,- My girlfriend got pulled over because a cop couldn't pass her while he was driving. He wrote her a ticket for view obstruction because she got an ornament hanging from her rear view mirror. |
