Why do you think baby boys are dressed in blue and baby girls in pink? Or that teenage girls lean towards red and boys to blue? Sure, this has been changing and many girls prefer blue over pink (me), but still...where did this even come from to begin with?

Gender and color

QUOTE
Researchers at Princeton University refer to this as the Pink Frilly Dress (PFD) phase.

QUOTE
When the color assignments among boys and girls did evolve in the '20s, the colors were reversed: pink was for boys and blue for girls. It wasn't until around the 1940s that the colors flip-flopped to the assignment we recognize today [source: The Guardian].

^ I'd love to see your goth-children when you have them, Tamacracker.

It makes me smile to think pink was associated with boys before the 20's.

I love blue. But I'm starting to lean toward green now.

Kind of off topic - The color for bully day is pink, and everyone in my school wears pink.

Black is not a color, its a shade! mad.gif sorry. I just wanted to sound smart. Haha.

When I first saw the topic title, it reminded me of Juno of how they wanted to paint the baby room yellow because it ws supposively a "neutral" color. Then the father said, "why does everyone think that yellow is a boy or girl color? I never had a yellow room when I was growing up." Eh, I don't know. Its probably from how society brings things up in the media and how the parents teach kids that "Blue is for boys and pink is for girls!" I like green though, I don't know what that makes me.

So does that make black the absence of white? Like how darkness is the absence of light?

Who cares. It's just some weird human being stereotypical thing.

i've never liked pink. or purple.
my parents said even when i was a little baby i would cry (i was a oober quiet child) if they even showed me pink or purple clothing.
over the years, my favorite color has evolved from i-don't-know (because i thought i was weird since i was the only person ever to hate pink or purple, i didn't fit in!) to navy blue. gorgeous color, IMO. red has been one of my favorites since i actually started concentrating on colors. navy blue > red though. plus red is starting to get more popular. :[

I don't believe in that stereotype. I pretty much never wear pink, even when I was a baby. I always wore blue... and that still holds true in the present. The only time I'm seen wearing pink is either 1. I have no other clothes or 2. It's Valentines Day. I prefer Green or maybe navy or gray. And I sometimes wear creme-y white, but I hate how it gets dirty so damn easily. :(.

I remember how there was an episode in "Gilmore Girls" when Sherry was having a baby shower and Rory and Lorelai were invited. Everything was green because they said it was the new pink or something.. Or maybe they chose it because they weren't sure of the baby's gender yet? I forget, but this thread reminded me of that.

I personally love Y E L L O W. :D

Social conditioning. There are far more startling and serious issues in the case of gender identity and gender role within our society - I thought this thread might have been about that. Instead, I'm sorely disappointed.

It's not a trend; it's a microcosm of a much larger social conditioning machine. Let your son dress in pink as much as he wants, but you aren't going to be winning anyone over having your son the laughing stock of his respective school. I want to torture my kids too, but I'm a bit more traditional: billy clubs and knives.

P.S. You can't shake hands with a clenched first, sure... but who the f**k wants to shake the hands of the men that are killing and oppressing their people? A f**king moron, that's who.

I know this is random but you should look up Brave New World by Aldous Huxley if you haven't already. It's a brilliant novel that illustrates what the worst case scenario 'social conditioning machine' could be.

Back on topic... personally I like yellow and purple for bedroom walls but I dont think I would ever dress a child entirely in one color... unless the clothes were ridiculously cute XD.gif

I thank goodness for this color distinction.

Me where I work: *sees mom with child, wearing white* "Awww!! What a cute baby boy!"

Mom: "...her name is Jessica. But thank you."

That reminds me of this picture:
