Ok. I know a lot of you love Tim Burton and I'm really happy for you, truly.

Me? I want him nowhere near Alice in Wonderland.

Alice in Wonderland is a trippy, trippy story. I'll give Tim Burton props on his older stuff, but NO. That's a classic story, so any remake will probably not justify remaking it.

Tim Burton didn't direct A Nightmare Before Christmas. Henry Selick (James and the Giant Peach) did. Give proper props, dammit!

Yeah, I can. Which is precisely WHY I don't want him near it. He'll do the Nighmare Before Christmas-esque thing again and I think this classic deserves something different, something more. It deserves to not be the typical and predictable regurgitated material Tim Burton so desperately clings to.

He could probably do a real interesting twist to an already messed up fairy tale. What's the worst that can happen? He'll screw it up, and people won't like it, or think it's too dark or something?
If they feel that way, they can not watch the movie, or just go back to the original.

Personally, i think it'd be interesting to see Tim Burton have a go at the movie.

Where the f**k are all these "weird" and "dark" Burton films everyone keeps talking about? Like, do you guys just sit inside all the time watching afternoon television? Wait, the f**k would that do?! Afternoon TV is darker and weirder than Tim Burton... f**k! Maybe, before I could feed myself, Burton was a bit "dark" and "weird," but, even then, he was nothing in comparison to Cronenberg, Lynch, Franco, Haneke, or a million other well established directors.

I actually think it'll be pretty interesting. I thought that (as far as animated films go...) The Corpse Bride was pretty good and if you separate his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from the original version (i.e. dont even try to compare Johnny Depp's Wonka with Gene Wilder's) it was also a fairly decent film.

I definitly can't wait to see a dark + twisty Alice and Wonderland thumbsup.gif

But, I love film, and I make it an effort to be passionate about those things that I love.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory was terrible, yes....but what was wrong with Sweeney Todd? Personally, I thought that movie was amazing and I went and saw it twice.

Who else could do Alice justice? I mean, Tim Burton is pretty weird. Alice in Wonderland is pretty weird. Seems like a good match to me.

i don't think you guys understand. alice in wonderland is a satire. the book was written in 1865 poking fun at the government. dont get me wrong, i liked the disney version, but it was never supposed to made into a children's movie. also, i dont think i could stand anymore of these goth wannabes talking about how f**king fantastic and dark tim burton is.

In 1865 I doubt it was ever meant to be turned into any sort of film, let alone a children's movie. But, for me, that's beyond the point. The film(s) and the book are completely different entities, it isn't like an adaptation has to be so similar to its source material in order to be good.

Secondly, it isn't like Tim Burton's adaptation will be the second... there are tons and tons of adaptations of Alice in Wonderland. I've seen a few that are weirder and darker, far beyond anything Burton could even ever dream up.

So, yeah, Burton sucks.

Why would anyone aspire to make a film adaptation exactly like a book? I just think it's sort of unimaginative and boring. And, really, what's the point? If the two are "identical," why bother? I suppose I understand it on some points, but, the reality of the matter is that an adapted piece of work is a separate entity in comparison to its source material (to try to argue that point is futile). And, really, they both should be judged independently of one another. I don't give a f**k if something is more like one thing than another... I give a f**k if it's good or not (isn't that what really matters?).

Remember the Alamo, my friend.

I respect all opinions, but you will be hard pressed to convince me that Burton is avant garde in any way. I find him trite and a complete bore at this point.

I don't mind Burton so much. But he did Edward Scissorhands and everyone think he is the master of the occult.

HE DIRECTED MARS ATTACKS!

I'm sorry he's just not dark at all.

Not that I don't love most of his movies. I never really paid any attention to his directing.

i still disagree not matter how much you try to persuade me. i'm going to compare a book to the movie because movies leave a lot of parts out and it makes more sense in the book, no matter how unimaginative and boring it is.

Well books are inherently not cinematic, and movies are inherently not literary.

Making a movie exactly like a book is nearly impossible for the pure reason of perspective. Books and their plot, character development, etc, its revealed in a far different way than movies are. Not to mention that books can have plots which are absolutely enthralling while being read, but if put on screen would be terribly boring.

It's just not possible.

Understood that movies will never be an exact replica of a book its based on, but I find myself comparing as well. I'm not overly critical when I compare the two, I just can't help myself.

Small things annoy me, like Faramir and Eowyn getting less screen time when nearly an entire chapter is devoted to them in the LOTR books while Aragorn and Arwen had things literally made up to fill screen time. Again, annoying to me but the movies are still enjoyable to watch. It's a shallow comparison, but my feeble attempt to make a point.

I'm able to separate the two mediums enough to enjoy both a book and a film adaptation.

That being said, I would rather see someone like Alfonso Cuarón direct an Alice in Wonderland adaptation.

rofl. funny ^.^. I can't believe you actually said Beetlejuice was good. It was the worst movie I've ever seen. I even posted it on the "worst movie ever" thread..

You've never seen a worse movie than Beetlejuice? Dude, you have no idea.

Alice in Wonderland was a porn movie as well, and I'm sure it's better than anything Tim Burton can do. I mean, read the plotline!
QUOTE
Alice offends her would-be lover William by rejecting his advances. Upset, she falls asleep reading Alice in Wonderland. The white rabbit appears to her in a dream and takes her into a sexual wonderland. The story loosely follows Carroll's original plot, and includes many of his characters, but with considerable sexual license.

Oh god, it's a musical even!

The pictures looked a bit disturbing to me at first, but it's definately creative and interesting. I've never been disappointed by the Tim Burton and Johnny Depp combination before, so I'm excited. The only thing that makes me slightly apprehensive is the fact that I never was a really big fan of Alice in Wonderland. ermm.gif

I always loved Alice in Wonderland, I just hated how people pass up the opportunity to make it how it should be. Creepy and weird. So I have high hopes for this.

WOW the pictures look stunning!

I think it's only appropriate that Alice in Wonderland be taken to this weird level. The story itself is pretty trippy...hell, even the Disney movie scared me shitless as a kid.

Reminds me of the weird movie Through the Looking Glass with Kate Beckinsale as Alice I saw many years ago randomly, on TV.

With Burton there's always a role for Depp and Carter. But I have to admit they do well together. While not all of his films are top notch like always, I look forward to see any of his movies that come out. I never red the book, or seen from start to finish the Disney version of this story.

The characters look a lot less stupid when they're actually moving. I was really disturbed by Tweedledum and Tweedledee at first, but they actually looked okay in the trailer.

I think the guy's a genius, and I would love to see his take on things.
I also agree to those who pointed out that Alice in Wonderland is already a dark and twisted fairy tale, so there really isn't that much to it :)

Side note: I'd really like him to see work on The Little Mermaid, considering the original plot was a miserable one...

i must say i'm excited. it does look very dark but it is Tim Burton. I'm so freakin thankful that it's not fully animated!! & johnny depp looks disturbing. Seriously. It creeps me out.

Kinda irritated that they already have the teaser trailer out when it's 8 months awayyyyy. :\

EDIT//
oh and Alan Rickman (snape from harry potter) is going to play the catapillar while Helena Bonham Carter (bellatrix lestrange from harry potter) will be the Red Queen! :) omggg

Eh, kind of have to side with Nate on this (minus hating sixteen year-olds, although I have met some pretty annoying ones haha). There are very few Burton films I enjoy, and it has nothing to do with the lack of content. I mean, I like Xanadu and Clash of the Titans, for goodness sake. I think that he has regurgitated his "material" and "style" so often that I can smell the vomit before entering a movie theater to see a film of his.

That and the whole casting incest he does gets flat out boring. I get it, he loves Johnny and Helena. Both of them, outside of Burton films I like. It's really odd. I also understand that he's not the only director to do this. Apatow constantly re-casts the fam. However, he at least mixes things up by changing lead roles and such. And on a side note, he's getting boring to me now as well for similar reasons. NEW MATERIAL, folks. Please.

I just wish that there would be an Alice in Wonderland, grounded in more realism than surrealism. That would make it actually creepy, instead of schtick-y. Lewis Carroll was sort of a creepy dude. We've already seen Alice in Wonderland done via zany. And must I remind people of the tragedy that was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? OH GOD.

I can completely see why people don't like Tim Burton movies. His movies are all the same in the end. But in his defense, if it ain't broke don't fix it. He's developed a huge fan base and knows that the money will keep rolling in if he feeds people dark fantasy movies with Johnny Depp in them. It may not gain the respect of movie aficionados, but I personally can't blame a guy for wanting make a little money. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm somehow entranced by it every time.
