Am I the only one that finds Heath Ledger "memorial graphics" to be in poor taste?
QUOTE Heath Ledger. The Joke®s on you! I'm assuming there won't be a Joker in the sequel to the next Batman film? So Heath Ledger passed away this afternoon and half of Xanga posts about it. So what? "But he was so young!" you say. So were the starving children in Africa 1/8 his age. Get over it. Courtesy Cakulusa Thoughts? |

He has a point but at the same time that still is kind of a disgrace to Heath Ledger. It's really stupid how superpowers like America act like nothing's going on in Africa and other third world countries. But it would just be completely out of taste to disregard Heath Ledger. Yeah its pretty unfair, but hey, as people in modern society today, what else can i say?

I was upset upon hearing of his death, but I'm also immensely aware of the other less fortunate countries in our world.
It was disappointing to see one of the featured Xanga articles featuring his death; as if half the world isn't posting about it already. |

I'd have to somewhat agree with you there.I think it's sad how when someone dies they get more recognition than they did when they were alive. I don't think we should have total disregard to what happened; you can't act like it didn't happen. If a star of Africa died, they would talk about it, too. You don't see me giving up my breakfast because there's starving kids in Africa. |

Who cares? Sure it's sad that he died, but what about the countless millions that are dying? So he was a famous movie star that had sex with lots of women (and our boy Jake), but did he shove his pompous ass into Africa and then act like he knows everything there is to know about saving the world? I think not. Besides, the f****t didn't even drop any good loot.

And besides, like Dee said people get more recognition dead than alive, it's the same with crisis in Africa such as Darfur. People's efforts aren't making the biggest difference. People aren't going to make a big deal about it until all the turmoil is totally over. Holocaust, for example? Obviously, the media likes to hide this crap because we all enjoy the delicious gossip of celebrities' lives and what Britney Spears is doing this exact second. Reality is bitter.

Mmm, but if we do start relating 'Western' hardships to Africa like this, noone would give two figs about any of our concerns. Heath Ledger is a concern I suppose; or a matter of interest (look at this I'm arguing with my original post).
But I do not like to see graphics/layouts/blinkies that bang on about missing this guy when really; his fan base had somewhat dimished after Brokeback had it's run. Suddenly he's public property again, ay. |

Actually I think Kurt was more...shocking. You front the biggest rock and roll band of the time and then splatter your talented and wasted brains up a wall with a shotgun. Press mania!
But I digress. |

But Kurt actually had message and meaning in his lyrics, and he didn't do it for the money. He hated living big and rich. He only bought his huge house because of Courtney Love. When he realized he was becoming exactly what he hated, his depression overcame him and SPLAT!

Get over it. why is it always about african kids? does it look like our society really gives a crap about people on the other side of the world, let alone people with no money? yes, world poverty is an important issue, and it is way more tragic than a death of one "celebrity" (or one can even argue all celebrities), but honestly, is it surprising that starving children in africa don't affect our society as much as celebrities do? we bash on teeny bopper girls who cry over heath ledger's death, but do we ever say anything to ourselves while we're on this forum, basically wasting time, when there are kids in other countries who can't afford a keyboard, let alone a whole computer and internet in which to connect? it just annoys me when starving kids are always brought up to make us feel guilty about something. in my other thread, i posted that my dog is more important to me than a starving child. to some girls out there, heath ledger is more important than a starving child. just like to some of us here, our car/our tv/our computer/ANYTHING is more important than a starving child. if we really cared about starving children, we'd be actively doing something to try and change their situation. |

I agree with Queen. Why is it that the crises in Africa are often brought up in situations? Poverty and world hunger aren't going to be eliminated so easily. The media frenzy over his death is so unrelated to the "starving children in Africa."
