When you go to, "Save As," Photoshop saves it as a .psd so that it saves your work, layers, and history. Use the dropdown menu to save it as .JPG so that it's an actual image file.
Hence the term, "Save As. . ." You're requesting that you want to save all of the work you've done and come back to it later. |

the above comment it correct but if you are going to be using the image in myspace or any website its highly recommended that you save it as a .GIF and to do that go to FILE> SAVE FOR WEBS AND DEVICES and save as gif

GIF is usually for animations or web graphics (not photos/images). Whenever you convert a JPG photo to a GIF, it loses a lot of its quality. Just because it's going to be on the web doesn't mean that you have to save it as a GIF. |

Gif format is better for web graphics.. You just said it yourself. Animations and web graphics.. uploading something to a website is called a web graphic.
If you save a raw photoshop file as a GIF, it will be better quality than a JPG if you save for web, but if you want the image for your computer, a JPG under the save as menu allows you to keep the file with no graphic loss. To make the file smaller, make sure you merge or flatten the image so the filesize is smaller before you save it. |
