Yeah, I mean if writing and books and such get their own forum, why shouldn't music?

It's of equal if not greater importance to books or whatever.

Yeah, that does sound like a good thing to do. But I guess it's more organized with music being integrated into the Entertainment forum.

I think it's easier on the mods to merge them together, less forums equals less to moderate and worry about.

I cannot come up with an argument to that statement.

Writing and Books are lumped into "Interests" and I'm not sure if music necessarily fits best there (although it is an interest). If Entertainment were ever to have subforums than Anime would fit there. Or perhaps add a Movies subforum and a Music subforum into Entertainment? Just throwing some ideas out there.

I personally hate adding subforums because all the posts in there get hidden away and hardly anyone replies to them.

There are a few exceptions, of course - the debate forum, for instance. Not everyone on CB wants to participate in a topic in which they are expected to think out well-written, intelligent responses; and quite frankly, those who do don't want the rest of CB participating. People who enjoy the debate forum go there to discuss issues with other people who like debate.

Same with the anime section. If someone posted a topic about Sailor Moon in the lounge, it would be blatantly out of place in that forum and the topic starter would probably get made fun of. That's not to say they wouldn't get made fun of in the anime section, too, but at least they'd more than likely get made fun of by other anime lovers.

People who are interested in fashion go to the fashion forum to talk about style, people interested in technology go to the tech forum; etc. These forums contain topics that simply would not fit anywhere else. That's not to say that we don't have subforums I disagree with, but we'll leave it at that.

In my opinion, in order to substantiate the need for a music program, we would need to prove that certain topics don't belong in their original home (Entertainment). If there were tons of topics and tons of discussions going on about musical instruments, theory, chord progressions, compositions, and performances, I can tell you that'd give us a great start to prove that there's enough interest to start up a music forum. I'll just tell you, I'd be the first person to post in it if I thought it was necessary.

Totally understood. However, one could argue that Anime would fit into Entertainment as well. Not that I don't like the Anime Forum, because I do. Just citing an example of something that could potentially be viewed as a superfluous subforum.

As far as the technical aspect of music goes (musical instruments, theory, chord progressions, compositions, and performances), I don't think that was really what the original poster had in mind. I think he meant music in general. I could be wrong on that.

The problem I see is where does it end? Music gets its own subforum, movies gets its own subforum, etc. Although, I think a music forum might get more traffic than the typical forum that gets no love because its somewhat hidden.

Seeing it from both sides is all. XD

I agree, and the only reason I see a need for the anime subforum is because it has been quite active at times and a lot of the people who post in entertainment have no interest whatsoever in talking about anime.

If the original poster is only wanting to discuss music in general, meaning all the topics in entertainment about music get moved to a new forum; then no, I don't think that it should be split off. Those topics fit perfectly in entertainment and don't seem out of place to me at all. Music is entertainment, so if we're not talking about the implementation and actual execution of music, then we're discussing music for its entertainment value, nothing else.

And I agree with the "where does it end" statement. As I said before, creating subforums creates more places for posts to hide and makes posting rather frustrating for people who try to make topics within those subforums. Usually when someone makes a topic, they want lots of input, and if it's hidden away in one of many little subforums then it's buried, and that's not fair.

I never understood why Entertainment didn't just become organized subforums like Interests. I think it would end up being a more directed and interesting section that way. A film section, a music section, move the sports and books sections in - why not?

I've never had a problem getting to the Debate thread because I care about debating - just as I would suspect that no one would have an issue making their way to the music forum as they have an interest in discussing music. Being "hidden" like that could actually cause threads to be more organized, directed, and spam-free. If people who aren't interested in music stay away from threads about them, then we don't have to deal with their ignorance as much.

They should want serious and thought-out input not responses for the sake of verbosity - clumping everything together promotes drive-by posting.

My biggest problem is not the amount of exposure topics get within subforums, although you and I have different opinions on that subject.

The main point I was trying to make in my last post was related to the types of music topics that would fit into this new forum. It sounds like you guys want to discuss music for its entertainment value in this new forum, and moving entertainment-related discussion out of the entertainment forum doesn't make much sense to me, personally.

I do think splitting up the entertainment forum into sections would make more sense with the addition of a music forum, though.

I somewhat like the idea of having subforums within the Entertainment forum, but then I think of the Interests forums... and they get less traffic than the other forums. I guess it depends on how much people care. If there's enough people that are going to benefit from having subforums in Entertainment than I'd be for it. It's not like once we do it, we're stuck with it. If we have enough people on board we could do it and if we decide we like it better the way it currently is than we could always go back.

Oh, then all there would be is to decide how many subforums and what? Shit.

Hmmm, I really like this idea now. Games usually get thrown into Technology... I think. I guess I should know off the top of my head. Boo.

I deffinately think that if Books, Anime, and Games, etc. are moved into Entertainment they'll get a lot more traffic. I don't think that just because there are subforums in the Entertainment forum that people will stop going to it. The only thing is, though, is what about the Interest Forums? Since some of them will be moved to Entertainment are the ones that left going to get even less traffic? Or do we need some fresh ideas for the Interests Forums?
Reason for edit: ...Or am I thinking into this too much?

I wouldn't mind if people stopped going to it. Actually, I think a huge problem with a lot of threads is too much traffic. I would be fine and dandy with less traffic in Entertainment - maybe that would mean more personal, more thought-out, and more interesting discussion. With heavy traffic everything just turns into the lounge. People just drive-by and spit words onto their keyboards without any thought to it - if anyone even gets around to reading what they spilled, it isn't like it will ever really have an impact. Sure, people discuss things, but, really, it seems like there are always just discussions happening against a sea of noise. It's a distraction. Less traffic might just mean more focus, and I think that's a good thing. But, unfortunately, I think the Entertainment subforums could actually be more successful than just Entertainment alone - meaning, more traffic.

Really, I just want a film forum. Ha.
