I hated the Scarlet Letter =( i had to read it for school, and it was pretty dull. Also, most of the "romance books" i read are pretty boring. They all have the same formula, are usually very slow-paced and with the same *stereotype* characters, and the end is always the same in all of them.

JOHNNY TREMAIN.
LITTLE WOMEN.
RASCAL.
THINGS FALL APART.
TALE OF TWO CITIES.
ECONOMIC SCENES.
MOBY DICK.
HEART OF DARKNESS.
ALL POETRY.

More to come. I have to use all-caps to express my hatred for boring books. Such a waste of time because sometimes, you expect the book to get more interesting instead of more dull.

I hate Scarlet Letter too. I hated how at some parts it would be really good then the author would drone on for a whole chapter on description. It seems like every time I attempted to read I'd fall asleep or end up reading the page three times.

I started reading Paint It Black, but it was a drag to read. It honestly felt like I was reading a freshmen's paper. I read The Dante Club, and it took me a while and I got a bit bored just because of the advanced vocabulary in it.

YOU'RE KIDDING.

I read it in grade school, and I could not stand that book for the life of me. We always read a few chapters in class by ourselves, you know, "reading time," and I ended up falling asleep more than once. So boring.

I can see how, without any guidance, Pride and Prejudice would be a rather boring book, but class discussions about this book have, by far, been the most interesting for me. I enjoyed the book a lot.

I've never read "Awakening," but I do remember liking Kate Chopin's short stories.

Most boring throng of reading so far has got to be ALMOST everything first semester of Lit Hum. Thucydides's "History of the Pellopenisian [f**k the spelling] war." UGH, torture.

The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
The Joy Luck Club
The Great Gatsby

But I have to opine on a few names here. The Odyssey? That book ruled. I got sent to the counselor's office for laughing out loud during the ending, which has a huge, bloody massacre. And Fahrenheit 451 was hilarious. You can't really get a better turning point in a novel than melting your oppressive boss with a flamethrower.

The plot was awful to me. Gatsby was supposed to be built up as this omniscient entity that ultimately fell short to the very humanistic qualities that made him a mystery to begin with, but all it did was make the narrator seem like a naive douchebag. When that's established (literary critics call that the "transit of doucheness"), the element of contrasting the frivolous, aristocratic characters to the consequences of what reality actually brings beyond their spectrum is pretty much defeated, since the eyes we're seeing the events unfold through aren't deemed to even be credible.

At least the movie was entertaining, but only in regards to the actor playing Nick being so wooden and unemotional that I could pretend he was a cyborg sent to analyze and assassinate the protagonists.

Also, I concur with Romeo and Juliet being horrible. As far as I was concerned, the main villains were those two shoving their lovey-dovey romance sequences in my face, and the lead hero was the dagger that ended everything (although I would have chosen a meteorite). The dagger definitely deserved way more time in the spotlight, perhaps through a heartfelt monologue to wrap things up. We never even hear from the dagger's point of view. Fortunately, Hamlet and its hilarity redeemed Shakespeare for me in high school.

Oh my god, Great Expectations, hands freaking down. I couldn't even get past chapter one without getting bored. I don't know how I managed to get through the entire book -- though, nothing really stuck in my head. I don't even remember what it was about. That's how boring it was. ._.

I dont know if I can actually say that I've read it. It's definitely something assigned to read in class, but I normally read some of it and if it's too boring then I end up reading it on spark notes.

Maybe Heart of Darkness. I can't remember if I liked the Great Gatsby or not... or if I even read it.

In Dubious Battle, by Steinbeck.

And..... can't remember the title, but we had to read it for sophomore lit. Something with "country" in the title. It was about South Africa post apartheid. I wanted to kill the narrator. Actually, I don't even remember if the narrator was an actual person in the story or if he (it) was some omniscient being or something. It was boring.

The Scarlet Letter.

I just could NOT get into it. The worst part was that I had to write an essay about it. If I'm not into it AND it's for school, it makes the book 100x worse.

I even thought Fahrenheit 451 was much more interesting. Anyone see the movie for that? Mmmm

Oh man, that book ruled. The epitome of manliness. I got kicked out of the library for laughing out loud at the part where he reminisces about engaging in a non-stop multi-day arm wrestling match so grueling that their fingernails were shooting out blood.

"The Double" Jose Saramago
Its about this guy who's having a dead end job and one night rents a movie and while watching see's someone that looks exactly like him. He goes off and searches for this mystery guy and..... thats all I've read and rememberd. hahaha

Anyways it was hard to read because Saramago's style is to not use any quotation marks or anything else but commas and periods.
It's hard to get into his style if you're use to regular books.

But a Great book that I loved by him was Blindness.
ITS BECOMING A MOVIE AND OMG YAY.

I think the thing about All Quiet On The Western Front is that it isn't particularly about plot, so it isn't for everyone. It's more about characterization, how war manifests itself within these sacks of flesh and blood and transforms it into something unseen before. That's its primary focus, and I've always been a person with a passion for characters and their idiosyncrasies and how dynamic and fluctuating their fundamental core is, so I thought the book was fascinating, but I think people who prefer plot-driven things won't like it as much.

And I personally never could get into Cry, The Beloved Country, by Alan Paton, which is really strange because black studies and such really fascinate me.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. had to read it for school and it was probably the worst book i've ever read.

that and O, Pioneers! by NOT IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE BOOK WAS A PIECE OF ......poop. :D

honestly, no point to any of the books. jane eyre is supposed to be this "girly" book but it was focused on a plain jane and her boring life. it was not exciting to read. neither was O, Pioneers. that book was such ish that our teacher decided we didn't have to finish it. we just watched the movie instead (it stars heather graham but her performance was ... not that great)

What the hell. Half of the books listed are actually really good and interesting if you dig deeper into their social and literary context. Hell, some of them are just interesting to read.

Get off your asses, turn off the TV, and start spending more time at the library.

That's what I was thinking through this whole thread. A couple of the books mentioned are my favorites.

However, I truly detest Hawthorne's writing style, and thus, The Scarlet Letter didn't work for me.

What's all this about Moby Dick being bad? I loved reading it.

Some people just have different tastes. I personally liked The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451, and Uglies (these are all books listed by other people as boring/not liked), but I'm not about to bash someone else for thinking they're boring.

^ uh, good for you? what, are you setting yourself up to be an example for the rest of us? bc i really don't think anybody cares what you are or are not about to do. anyways, i wasn't bashing anybody, especially since it is perfectly legitimate for anybody to say that someone else's tastes just sucks.

Anyways, I hate Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing. While interesting to analyze, I personally think St. Augustine's Confessions was a drag to read. Dante's Inferno is pretty good, but I couldn't get through Purgatorio nor Paradiso. I hated Virgil's Aeneid. Aeneas is a dull, dull, dull character. Dido's pretty awesome and dramatic, but Aeneas... not so much.

I think most people just prefer INTENSE ZOMG THRILLING STORYLINE over a true literary uh..gem? because the general public has already been force fed action-esque movies/shows their entire lives. they're simply not used to reading about the "mundane" life of characters that don't get blown up? what? boring! classics are obviously classics for a reason, but some people just can't or don't know how to appreciate literary devices, intriguing conversations, diction, etc etc

^ that, and i also think that most of the classic, old books that are simply good provide an insightful and interesting social commentary about how people of certain time periods lived, etc.
