It seems like a lot of regular members are shining more than official members when it comes to Member of the Month. I am suggesting the idea of anyone can win Member of the Month, and if my chance a regular member wins they will be handed over the official member status for winning the title.

What do you guys think of this?

Would the OM status be a permanent status? that would make the most sense. I like this idea.

Well look at Ruth, shes been here for a while and is getting nominated like crazy and she only has like 800 posts.

There is MissHygienic and shes an excellent member and she only has around 200-500 posts and shes still active and has been nominated as well.

JC wasn't an official member yet he was a great member and made great quality posts.

Them having to be OM's kind of gives the community more of a chance to get to know them.

yeah but this becomes unrealistic in a lot of cases, esp people who have had their account a while and not been active. when they come back, regaining ppd or 3500 posts is hard.

You wouldn't Thomas?
How about Jeanna? She was a regular member and left and came back and was a good member, very well liked and was active. Contributed quite a few topics in many different places around the Community center.

Ruth is revoltaire

I don't know about you JC but I wouldn't nominate an inactive member for MoTM.

i don't mean that, i mean people who come back from being inactive. i didn't use my account for a year, and then came back and was active. so i was annoyed at the fact that i couldn't be nominated because my ppd was low. yet someone could come and join and have a 28 ppd average a week later and get nominated over me.

^Exactly,

Everything that is here has its flaws but we have to look at the positives. Personally I don't think some new member out of no where is going to win the MOTM..for one you have to be nominated and then the staff come together to state the final winner.

yknow i just think this could be a nice perk for motm. lets look at it that way. i mean plenty of other people actually work their way to OM and then their activity drops a ton. i dont see a problem with this, personally.

QFT ^_^

Once you get to (is it 3000? 3500?) posts, sure, you're a perma OM. But until then, you don't have to climb to that 5 PPD to necessarily be a great member. I would rather see someone post thoughtfully then to be a quickie poster just to get the OM status. To me, the former clearly is more of a MoTM candidate.

Great idea. MOM being confined purely to OM's makes it difficult to nominate OM's over regularly active members sometimes.

I wonder who thought of this idea a while ago... rolleyes.gif

But, yes, I think it's a good idea. But I also think it should be less permanent than those who have reached a certain number of posts. If their activity dies significantly, then the status should be removed.

Actually, I think this was brought up before Michelle was on staff. I just can't remember who brought it up, but if memory serves, someone was mentioning it not too long after MoTM was created.

Point is, it's a good idea, and if more than one person has thought about it and brought it up, then cool.

Very true. It's just finding the balance of what activity should be maintained.

See, I see PPD as a rather shitty way of maintaining OM status. Sure, it's not difficult when you're first getting there, but once you have posts in the thousands, if you take any break at all it's a sick process to get your PPD up. At least in my opinion it is.

I'm sorry to bump this, but a new month approaches and I was wondering if a decision has been made.

The poll results are undeniably favorable in having regular members included.

Yeah? Any word? I'm sort of interested in having my OM status back - I've been a long time supporter and contributor here and it's kind of disheartening to see that spammers and drive-by posters are reworded more than dedicated and thoughtful contributors.

Them having to be OM's kind of gives the community more of a chance to get to know them. Unless you change the criteria of MoTM.. I've never really seen someone that was really new win MotM, they've had chances but weren't actually the winners, they usually won the following month if they were still active. The current winner was nominated last month and she was really new then, but she didn't win. She won the following month after she was still continually active.

I don't see why not! I definitely think that if a regular member has proven that they've outshined the rest over that month, they absolutely should win.

And if they do, people would pretty much be like "Why isn't he/she an Official Member anyway?"

About the comment relating to newer members - the staff does make the final vote on Member of the Month, and if they win, it will certainly be because they deserve it, whether they remain active or not. Suzzette won SMOTM before, and even though what happened happened, she still deserved it when she won it.

I just don't think their given enough for such a prestigious award.

I don't think MOTM is a prestigious award. It's just a popularity contest given to someone every month.

And if Sally can get her 8,000 posts back and get OM status, I don't see why Loquat can't.
