I was inclined to agree with you and tell you that they're crap, but I see nothing wrong with it. I see people using that type of stuff all of the time. The second and fourth icon from the left are the only ones I would consider using, though.

I think the fourth one is best. Color and text effects are both good. I'd use more than one or two fonts though (not in the same icon).
